Maybe that's why my perception is different when it comes to episode 1. If you have really been to a bad movie, there is no applauding or cheering. Simple as that.
Internet wasn't big at all back when the first movie came out. At least not for me. I agree with him though... The Phantom Menace seemed off and not half as good as the originals.

The reality is it really truly probably does not make financial sense to restore the originals since its unlikely that there would be a huge number of people who would rebuy the originals to make Lucas see a return on his investment.

I have always preferred the SE over the originals, but I have always felt that originals should be preserved as part of film history.
I grew up watching the UOT. I know them. I lived them for years and years...I knew them by memory. When the special Edition came out I was at the movies. I was getting a special edition of my favorite movie..how could that be bad? Are there people out there who have never seen the UOT? if that's the case, should they watch it? I think the special editions are better in a way, because after watching the originals with all their faults I always wanted something new and fresh. I had seen the originals at the movies, on Beta, on VHS over 500 times...why would I want the same old thing? its a good idea to make the movie fresh and fix it up. it's like fixing your old car. Why do people always seem to be against this? I will never understand. If I take a picture of something today, but tomorrow I can take a better picture why not do it? It's a restoration process. Lucas was obviously traumatized over the lack of control and bad effects in the originals with the puppets and blu screens. Let him fix it, i've already enjoyed the films in their original form. Im not a selfish person.

I agree about fixing them up but not changing stuff like Han not shooting first.

Really? Because it did for me. I saw it on a Digital Screen with THX sound. I never said it was better than the originals. But on it's OWN, as a film it was fun, different and interesting to watch. I saw it 15 times at the movies. So, your opinion is what it is.

lol. I have to be honest with you Ite. When I saw the film at the movies when I was 6 years old. I didn't really care who shot first. And I still don't. That's something that no one really, really cares about. I mean I do care a little bit. The point of the scene was to show that Han Solo was running from the law and that he was some sort of space cowboy. So he shot first or last. in the end, it doesn't matter to the whole storyline, because we never saw Jabba till ROTJ and He still got captured by Boba Fett.

LOTR: TTT made "only" $349 million domestic, despite the critical and fanboy gushing and praise I guess that's a failure too since it's only $39 million more than Clones.
The numbers are meaningless. Numbers and Critics do not make a good movie. When people get older they understand this. I never look at numbers anymore or critics. Yeah, I do read some of Roger Eberts reviews, but he's the only one I kinda listen too. These days, everyone is a film critic. And guess what? most of them hate watching films.

Also what about him adding Jabba in to the earlier movie? What did you think of that?

Look at the top grossing movies of all time

http://www.imdb.com/boxoffice/alltimegross

Episode V is the lowest SW movie and it is at #44

Now if you adjusted for inflation it would be hight. But the point is all the SW movies were a financia success.

Not to mention the the otehr items markeded such as DVD's, toys, etc.

That was a big deal before the special edition came out. When I first saw the shots of that I went back to try to find anything about that scene, but there was no youtube back then. there was something on the star wars insider and lucas had always talked about cutting it and having it, saying he wanted to do something to do with it, instead of just throwing it away. I've seen parts of it at the comic con and it looked good.

So when I heard it was going to be in the SE I was very, very happy. Even as it came when it was released at the movies like in 1997. I was first in line and even got the figure. I went to see it with my wife and mom back then and when I first saw the scene at the movies it blew me away...

I don't mind. I didn't like Jabba's look in 1997, but the 2004 DVD was much better. The scene was shot in 1975/76, so it's not like he was trying to have Harrison Ford re-shoot and then add Jabba. I would have liked to have seen the Biggs scenes with Luke's friends added (I think we will get that as a deleted scene in this set ).

The numbers are not meaningless in the context of the conversation. The person you were resonding to was responding to someone saying that they were.

I am older and I can tall you a simple fact. Hollywood and the movie industry gauges success by the box office numbers and ultimatly the profotability.

You are mixing the context of the conversations.

Numbers and critics do not make a good move, that is correct. That is subjective by the viewer. You can have a mefiocre movie make a lot of profit at the box office.

However the studios are not motivated by whether it is a good movie or not, they are motivated by profit.

Look at that link I provided in an earlier post. ROTS is #12 of the all time box office money makers (gross)..terrible numbers?....ok

Here is another statistic for you

ROTS took 113M to make and a 380M US bx office. A 336% difference to what it took to make in non adjusted dollars, not counting international box office or other expenses such as marketing

Avatar cost 237M and 761M it took in in the US box offices. A 321% difference to what it took to make in non adjusted dollars, not counting international box office or other expenses such as marketing

Did you like it in 97? because when I saw it at the movies, I liked it. I kinda have a very good memory of it. Kinda photographic...because I can still remember saying how Good Jabba the Hutt looked. But of course, in 97 the effects like that were good. Not so much today.

I know what you are saying...you know Episode 1 is coming to 3D right? next year. it's going to be bashed. it's probably not going to make any money. it will add to the gross, but I don't expect the critics to love it.

Let me predict now. The critics will hate it. The fans will hate it. There's going to be complaining about the 3D. Saying how bad it is. etc.

then the numbers will come in and people will say that it was a failure for 3D films..

And after all that guess what? I will Love the film on 3D, I will not care about what others say or listen to numbers or critics.

Hope that proves my point.

I am debating whether or not to see TPM in 3D, but that decision is not a crucuial one right now. I'm not a big fan of 3D to be honest, although I'll admit Star Wars in 3D is an intriguing thought. This BD release will be for me, the definitive set. At least for a while, but I'm hoping for a long long time...

WHY? Do you think the ticket is too high? I for one would rather watch episode 1 on 3D than go to the movies this weekend to see something I don't want to see. So, I don't see why that decision is life ending. I can assure you I will be in line.

Nah, that's not it. It's just 3D as a whole, for me isn't that big of a deal, but like I said, Star Wars in 3D is a very interesting prospect. So I'll probably end up seeing it.
