Martin Scorsese on Hollywood: "The industry is over"

Click on ^

Marty is a completely different animal. Comic books superheroes he most likely didn't read growing up. Nothing's wrong with that. And nothing's wrong with mafia and violent movies. And nothing's wrong with Jesus and priests.

It is what it is, we're in the movies ... October 20th

I really hope this stays in theaters for a while. Getting a convenient showtime for a near 4 hour (with trailers & commercials) movie tends to be tough for me, and I'm not gonna be able to see it for a week or two after launch. Every damn theater in my area always have the same showtimes, you'd think they'd stagger them.

Whenever a movie takes place in Oklahoma, the speech patterns and accents are always wrong. I've lived here my entire life, and I don't have a Southern accent. Most of the people here don't.

I truly hope they get the voices right in this movie. Fingers crossed.

Well, this film is set in the early 20th century.

It can depend on how old you are.

Like me, I live in Florida today, and none of the young people under 40 have southern accents, even ones born and raised here. But the elderly people mostly do, and the middle aged people are either/or. Mostly very rural people talk southern. I am originally from up north, but when I'd visit relatives in the south and/or Florida in the 60s and 70s, if they were from there, they all sounded southern.

Depends where in FL you're talking about too...while geographically FL is considered part of the south, there seems to exist an indivisible divide as far as what constitutes the traditional "south" vs. not. North FL would likely be considered the "south" by those who live there, while residents of south FL probably wouldn't embrace southern culture.

Sweet Bird of Youth takes place in the fictional town of St. Cloud, likely somewhere between north and central FL, yet it sounds as southern-fried as any of Williams' other movie adaptations that take place in Mississippi or New Orleans.

Well, I'm in central Florida, but I know a bunch of 20-somethings from places like Lake City and Starke and places like that, and none of them sound southern at all, today. Many of the girls sound like they stepped out of the S. California valley, LOL.

I, too, usually cringe at Hollywood's portrayal of southerners, in general. People who've never stepped a foot in any remotely southern state do these wildly overwrought "Steel Magnolias" or "Forrest Gump" types of accents and that always irritated me, LOL.

I'm 50, and people who lived here in the early 20th century certainly could have sounded differently. I guess the main problem I have is this: some people in Oklahoma do have accents, but they don't sound like the accents in the movies. As you know, there are many different types of Southern accents, and the Okie accent is never properly represented.

Did you ever see August: Osage County? That movie is a perfect example of how the people of Oklahoma do not sound.

I'm certain this one will get a physical release down the line, as well. After wide theatrical release, and after it's on Apple for a while.
Cool. Thank you! I'll look into it. I was convinced it would be permanently digital as they want people to subscribe and rent it digitally. Surprised to hear it. Prey just went to disc too soon.

I like the conflict of the story of this film, not knowing anything about the story here. Is this based on a true story? I'm not sure, I'll look into it more.

But what is interesting is the son, DeCaprio of DeNiro, has a major conflict developing with his
[Show spoiler]girlfriend/wife versus his father who may be responsible for some major horror to her family.
That could lead to some great conflict dialog between DeCaprio vs DeNiro, both talented actors.

Apparently, Leo's 20 years+ older than his character at the time of the events of the story but a) he looks great for his age and b) great actor and gets asses in seats.

Have you seen what a 28 year old looked like in the 1920s?

It's not the first time Scorsese cast someone way older than the character they played. Joe Pesci was 20+ years older than his character in Goodfellas.
