In case anyone is wondering how Chainsaw Man UK BD compares to JP BD: https://slow.pics/c/UdTqSs0y (not mine)

Guess I'll have to pick up the JP BD 2nd hand someday.

Sometimes it looks really damn bad. Another from the same scene showing some nice detail loss.
This was the first scene I checked on the BD (start of ep2), and bear in mind I'm comparing it with CR.
CR in general seems to present a more stable image. The Funi BD looks worse in motion due to the amount of noise, not to mention the detail loss due to the debanding... whilst still having more banding...

I don't have time to make a thorough review of that. In short, Selecta gave the wrong gamma treatment to Neon Genesis Evangelion as well.

Nothing special to Selecta customers, however for the french ones, this is a three act tragedy:
- Dybex get burned with Demon Slayer thanks to Pianeta Zero incompetence.
- They listen to the consumers and ditch them as partners in the middle of NGE production.
- Likely due to the production delay, they ask Selecta to save the day with their assets. Chaos ensues

I wish they would just stick to AVMedia rather than hoe around. And Selecta needs to address once for all this one issue, the encode itself isn't bad.

Having seen other shots of it, I disagree. The encode shits itself in the darker regions, which, combined with increased gamma, makes an unappealing and insulting release. "More accurate to the source" my ass, Carlo.

The elevated gamma ruins the encode and is the source of most bad artifacts in the darker regions anyway, don't get me wrong. The encode is most definitely okay on average brightness scenes and regions. But the wrong gamma is unacceptable in any case.

The problem is that, from what I gather online, Spanish customers are either not aware of the gamma issue or they just don't care about it, and Selecta is not known for listening to customers anyway. If you take a look at the MundoDVD forums their PQ and gamma issues are very rarely brought up, they basically (rightfully) complain about the fact that they fill their special editions with useless tat to increase the asking prices. It really pains me that (basically) the only Spanish anime publisher is this incompetent. I really would like to support them, but there is simply no reason to do it when much, much better releases of everything they put out exist in other markets. I've been burned too many times, so I just never bother with them anymore.

Australia Question regarding multiple releases of Evangelion blu-ray

Hello, has anyone done a comparison of the Italian release of Neon Genesis Evangelion (2023 7 disc repackage and 2021 limited edition release) to the other versions (US, UK, AU) releases in terms of video and audio?

Also, is the encode of the 2023 release from Dynit the same as the 2021 release from Dynit?

Also, has anyone done a comparison of the UK release of the 4k scan of Sakura Cardcaptor and the JPN version of the same 4k scan? Hopefully, these questions are not too much to ask for.

I am simply interested in buying the best release in terms of video.

Any comparisons out there between Funimation's Panty & Stocking set and the Forever B***h Edition from Japan? I got the Funimation set but the Japanese set is a cooler looking collector piece. It's subtitled which is great, buuuuut seeing as its really pricey I don't wanna go all in unless there's at least a small video difference. Better encode in any way and I'll bite. If it's virtually the same I'll forget about it...for now.

Like the Clouds, Like the Wind BDs comparison
https://slow.pics/c/gPWhSXFO

The 2018 Discotek BD (now OOP) used a older transfer done for HDTV rebroadcasts
The OCNs were rescanned for the 2021 JPBD
Additionally the old 2010s transfer uses a really bad optical audio track, with lots of pops and clicks
The 2021 scan uses very nice magnetic stereo elements

Not mine: https://slow.pics/c/Mpn5IqCL Doesn't display the frame type information.

I was told that the UK BD is better encoded. However, the UK BD has a strange issue on the final three episodes + textless OP/ED 3 on Disc 10 where the surround channels on the Japanese track play 16 samples too early.

Despite 16 samples being less than 1ms (1ms is 48 samples in 48kHz), the difference is big enough to cause the music to sound muffled when you attempt to downmix the track to stereo. If you watch the BD on a 5.1 setup, it's perhaps much less of an issue, or maybe not even noticeable at all because no downmixing is involved.

Here's a 10 second sample from the opening of episode 70 with and without the 16 sample delay fix (downmixed to stereo in eac3to)

I think the Discotek one looks better. It has more grain so just feels more authentic and stuff

Looks fantastic. If only they didn't scrub off so much grain but it's a net positive in virtually every aspect. No detail was lost only gained.

Thank you for the screenshots and further information. I like the UK and ITA versions of NGE more but for some screenshots, I prefer the UK version and for others, the ITA version, I'll have to look at all of them carefully again I guess.

I've also heard about the audio issue on the UK's version of Sakura Cardcaptor for the final 3 episodes or so on each disc D:

Both have pros and cons. ITA has more details in dark area with motion but fewer close to some type of edges. Captures 21 and 23 illustrate this duality: the better one on the first fare worse on the second. Whichever you pick is probably as good as it gets.

Seems to be a solid encode for a demanding show and in a great boxset, with an artbook and even a CD for the soundtrack.

Unrelated to Bahamut but definitely on subject for this topic: Japanese Aquatope Blu-Ray is full of gross colorbanding.
Damm, I was planning to import Aquatope on BD since there is no domestic release, but that is just awful what they did to the JP BD. It looks even worse than the freaking CR stream.

Did that anime ever got any other release outside of Japan?

The 2018 Discotek BD (now OOP) used a older transfer done for HDTV rebroadcasts
The OCNs were rescanned for the 2021 JPBD
Additionally the old 2010s transfer uses a really bad optical audio track, with lots of pops and clicks
The 2021 scan uses very nice magnetic stereo elements
really wish discotek was able to re-license this and give it a steelbook release using the JP transfer but unfortunately it's not possible

Tried to automate the comparison in vs-preview, but couldn't get vs-preview to fetch my slow.pics account token.
