yeah I agree, Tales of Hoffman and Alphaville were hard to get through, but I loved Marienbad.

Just watched Tokyo Drifter....good movie but I enjoyed Branded to Kill more.

I remember seeing somewhere that the AFS code would only be good trhough this month, I think it had something to do with Kurosawa's bday. Does anyone know how long its supposed to last?

I thought AFS was short for American Film Student or something. Like discounts for film school kids. I never heard anything about it having something to do with Kurosawa's b-day. It should be good until they don't have it anymore. I placed pre-orders for April stuff, so that should still be good for pre-orders. If you are worried about it, place pre-orders now before they stop/if they stop the code.

ALSO, Alphaville is great. For the ones who can't sit through it, how many Godard's have you all seen? Curious to know.

I thought AFS meant "All For Sale."

I don't know, I still think it's some type of "American Film Student", since it is a discount.

AUSTIN FILM SOCIETY, nice find.

I hope they honor pre-orders before the deadline of films that come out after.

With the new review up, isn't it upsetting to you, CG, that reviewers get the discs so damn early... especially, since it's the Godard title?

Alphaville is possibly the Godard film that I enjoy most (or Pierrot Le Fou). Sad to see others aren't so fond of it. It's about halfway in between my favorite genre (film-noir) and my second favorite film (2001).

The "elevator" shot in Alphaville is one of my favorite takes in all of cinema. Godard was ingeniously inventive.

I just read on the main page that Disney is releasing Beauty and the Beast on October 5th. That seems like a perfect chance for Criterion to release the Cocteau film as a companion piece. Pure speculation on my part, but I would like to see it happen.

I've seen Breathless, Contempt, Pierrot le fou, and Week End. I like Breathless and Week End a lot (enough to own), and I liked Contempt and Pierrot le fou a little less (just under enough to want to own). Obviously I haven't tried many of his "more challenging" films, but maybe someday.

Of what I saw that was easily what liked the most.

I'll probably give it a shot again one day... presumably when Studio Canal releases it on Blu.

It's also oft-putting for those not expecting such a film. Personally, I think it's the best blu-ray Criterion has issued and one of the top 10 films ever made. When it hit the art house circuit in 2008 I saw it on consecutive nights--- it's hypnotic.
I saw Last Year at Marienbad when it came out on BD, renting it from Netflix, not knowing anything about the movie. I was confused as I was watching it, but I found it fascinating. I couldn't get it out of my head for the next few days and it ended up being one of the first Criterion Blu-rays that I bought. Same story with Pierrot Le Fou. I knew nothing about the movie and had not seen any other Godard movies but I still enjoyed it also.

So I just got home for spring break and I can finally use my Blu Ray player again. Bigger Than Life played fine, but I had some issues with 8 1/2 skipping and Days of Heaven wouldn't load. Any idea what's up? I sent a request for a firmware update disc; I really hope that's the issue.

It says "Use discount code AFS by March 31" on that link. I wonder if they're just referring to the Kurosawa box set or all Criterions. Is it possible the code is expiring Wednesday?

I didn't have any problems with either of those discs, but I have been reading that a few select people were having a problem with the "Days Of Heaven" disc around the 47 minute mark.

Thanks for the feedback... I decided to go this route.

It's my Birthday, and the AFS code was still working, so I just said screw it and ordered them as a treat to myself.
