See, this is where you lose me as an audience. For every positive thing you say you counter it with some ridiculous statement like this. Kids are still kids. The only thing that has changed is our age and the technology we use. Everyone, no matter their age, is looking to streamline their set up. Again, stop trying to paint everyone in a corner. Yeah, I remember phones on walls too!

Hey I'm with you guys, I love my Home Theater, I grew up watching Movies. My Mom and Dad would take the whole family to the Local Theater, and I would stay up with my Mom watching Old Classics on The Tube. I just don't see this happening anymore, I think we are okay for a Decade or two, but after that if things don't change the Home Theater is in trouble. TV's on the wall or Transparent will be the rage, but a typical Home Theater is in question.

OK, can we just nip this in the bud right now? None of us can predict the future and this is a physical or digital thread. So can we stick to that and stop making these outlandish proclamations?

Other than phones, tablets, game systems, (tech) the Millennials and especially the generation after (iGeneration or whatever), don't appear to be too interested in physical belongings. They are really that jacked in.

I can foresee a future where all the things we hold dear are forgotten. Things that are highly collectible now will be worthless. The Retail Apocalypse has only just begun.

I can not imagine any generation preferring to watch a movie on a 5.7" smartphone screen. And I can imagine a lot. How can you not have room for a TV that mounts easily to any wall? You can actually buy a 65" LG 4K HDR TV for $760 at Walmart and that is a bargain compared to the cost of the iPhone X or the Samsung Galaxy S9. And you do not need a new TV every year to remain cool like you do with status symbol smartphones. Anyone who can afford these phones can easily own a large 4K HDR TV while they occupy their parent's basement.
Start imagining it. It’s pretty scary how many of my 20-something co-workers tell me that they only bother watching any video based content on their phone or laptop while at home. And even worse is how many of them say that anyone who pays for content is stupid.

Really? Then can you explain to me how my 8.5 year old bounces from tablet, streaming and physical on a almost daily basis He only uses my wife's iPhone when he is getting a haircut to keep him busy. And I'm sure once we find our next home it is going to be hard pressed to pull him away from his first tv that will put my hand me down 13" black & white tv to shame

I can understand watching videos on a 17" laptop a lot better than on a smartphone. The first TV I ever owned was a 19" GE CRT and I thought it was great at the time. When you say these young adults do this at home, I wonder if that home is actually theirs or if they are still in their parent's house? I do know that my behavior evolved after I got my own home and as I matured. I was in boot camp at age 20 myself and I turned 21 while there. My drill sergeants had me do multiples of 21 push-ups all day that day, but I digress down memory lane. Point is that even by the age of 30, I had changed a lot. These young adults will also.

I also noticed that many of the people who saying buying content is stupid say so because they think stealing it is smart. Ethics are of no concern until they themselves are the victims of theft or other dishonesty.

That’s the younger generation for you, entitled and thinking the world owes them a favour. (Just my opinion and I mean in general)

Default How much time does blu-ray have left?

I really wonder what everyone thinks in terms of the longevity of blu-ray?

My main concern is that the TV releases are becoming more and more uncommon. I'm not sure how much of the market 4kUHD takes, and streaming seems to be getting bigger and bigger.

I would like to believe that the mainstream films will continue to be released, but who knows.

I think catalogue titles will be OK, as there are hardcore collectors that keep those guys afloat. Still, nothing is certain.

Just wondering what everyone thinks?

Since DVD's are still around, my guess is Blu ray will be here atleast for the next decade.

I think there will always be a market for mainstream releases on physical and since we still see DVD releases it will be a long time till Bluray goes away.

Plus I could be wrong, but it seems to me catalog titles are doing fairly well as it seems more and more are hitting the market. With labels like Twilight Time, WarnerArchive, Arrow, Shout! putting out some really good releases. Even B movies seem to be getting releases. I think a bigger hurdle to Bluray releases of older films has been restorations or good surviving elements.

The major studios no longer support physical media except for tentpole titles that make them money. Paramount will continue to fall back on films like Grease, The Godfather and even Friday the 13th because those properties always make them money. The problem lies with studios that refuse to license to third parties, which creates a vacuum of product that in all likelihood won't see the light of day. The studios that do license will continue to rake in the money and keep physical media supporters happy for years to come.

As far as 4K UHD, I haven't been 100% impressed with the format to be honest. I still think Blu-ray presents a very satisfying picture most of the time and if you have a good upscaling player it'll probably be good enough

Blu-ray in itself never goes away. If you have the disc, you will always have the Blu-ray. Streaming is not concrete. It can disappear at any second. And that is why Blu-ray is superior and that is why it will last.

Actually a lot of these younger people just are subscription based or free options. It doesn't always mean pirating. YouTube has pretty much anything you can find. Many movies or concert blu-rays can be found on YouTube. In fact I'm sure I could find quite a few of my library movies on YouTube. Also, Crackle and other digital channels offer free movies, heck even Vudu now does.

And if the younger generation do pay, they will pay for Netflix and stream. And, they will pay for a music subscription like Spotify, or use a free music option like Pandora or iHeart Radio. They won't buy CD's or songs from iTunes. We older people grew up on the only way to get something was to buy it, but now those movies and music are readily available for free or a subscription.

This is why I feel digital and physical basically have the same lifespan. To me it's not like Digital is the way to go now. Subscription services are already eating into the digital market (as well as the physical market). Subscription based services and free options are the future, in my opinion.

But, after saying that I see the DVD still being produced ten years from now. It's still a solid seller. Blu-rays probably too, but I'm not sure about 4K blu-ray, as this seems to be the smallest marketshare. There's still many people who purchase these items (young and old, but they are in the minority), so I don't see them going away too soon.

As long as you guys continue to put more money in Netflix and other streaming services pockets, the physical market will continue to dry up. I'm telling you, Netflix will be the end of the physical media if allowed to continue to get bigger and bigger. It's buying up so many licenses and properties that we won't know what the heck happened to our physical media until it's too late.

It won't disappear in the near future, but people should start facing the facts that streaming and digital downloads are 100% the future, and will take over physical media at some point sooner rather than later. You will have a scenario where the biggest blockbusters are available on disc, but most other titles (just like CDs) are not. It's not a matter of if, but a matter of when, and since Internet speeds are capable of 4K streaming now in many areas (yet haven't been offered for sale yet), you'll start to see more of a gravitational move to streaming once that happens.

The fact that you can still buy DVDs has nothing to whatsoever on the lifespan of blu-ray. It's still the cheapest means of replication and many people don't care about HD quality any way and think DVD is good enough. I would honestly think blu-ray might disappear BEFORE DVD, for those 2 factors alone, unless blu-ray costs plummet. There's so many QC errors on discs now that companies have to spend extra money to fix, that it's driving the market into the ground. And why are there errors? Because profits are in the toilet, and the costs of replicating, shipping, printing artwork, physics cases, overstock, etc, can all be eliminated with streaming and/or downloads. Plain and simple.
