Also, Crackle and other digital channels offer free movies, heck even Vudu now does.

And if the younger generation do pay, they will pay for Netflix and stream. And, they will pay for a music subscription like Spotify, or use a free music option like Pandora or iHeart Radio. They won't buy CD's or songs from iTunes. We older people grew up on the only way to get something was to buy it, but now those movies and music are readily available for free or a subscription.

This is why I feel digital and physical basically have the same lifespan. To me it's not like Digital is the way to go now. Subscription services are already eating into the digital market (as well as the physical market). Subscription based services and free options are the future, in my opinion.

But, after saying that I see the DVD still being produced ten years from now. It's still a solid seller. Blu-rays probably too, but I'm not sure about 4K blu-ray, as this seems to be the smallest marketshare. There's still many people who purchase these items (young and old, but they are in the minority), so I don't see them going away too soon.
That’s still pirating watching recent films on YouTube.

Oh and UHD is a newish format so it’s only natural it’s market share is small for now.

Is watching it on a TV in a bar pirating too?

Blu-rays will be around for the forseeable future.

First part, not if the movie is public domain. Many older movies are public domain, like Night of the Living Dead. If not, then pirating, yes.

Second part. We'll see. 4K will definitely work in digital. Especially when iTunes upgrades your movies to 4K for free. Physical, we'll see. DVD still outsells Blu-ray, and always will. I would assume 4K will always have the smallest market share between DVD, blu-ray, and 4K blu-ray. So, who knows the future of the format? That's my guess, anyway, but it's just an opinion.

Yes but landlords need to have a licence to show movies. If they do, no it’s not.

It’s no different to sports. Public house landlords need a license to show live football. If they don’t its’s breaking the law.

You are just being awkward sir!

Once the 5G networks are up and running in the US, we'll have to kiss a lot of things goodbye. Everything from blu-rays to ethernet ports. Hear me now, quote me later.

No high quality format will ever dominate the market. The masses just like cheap and nasty. We know this. UHD will have its niche and like you say, subscription is king. Digital HD is a niche also and a stepping stone to subscription much like Apple MP3 downloads was to subscription music.

As for people watching YouTube films , that makes me want to vomit.

It feels like you don't actually own it if it's just internet streaming, though.

Please. Physical media will be around for quite some time. The US is too big of a country to be entirely dependent on an older internet backbone.

Default The one thing I can tell you for certain... :-P

Blu-ray will be here and gone before we ever see The Abyss and True Lies offered on anything other than DVD in non-anamorphic widescreen.

CDs are still being made and people have been predicting the death of CD since iTunes first launched.

Physical media is declining at a far lower rate overseas than it is here. So even if that time comes, imports will still be an option. In the coming years, a region-free player is going to be essential to those who love to collect films.

I know. I was just being tongue-in-cheek. I thought it sounded funny that watching something on YouTube could be considered pirating, but I know that it’s the uploader doing the pirating and the viewers are just taking advantage of that YouTuber’s strange generosity/middle finger to the system.

I too prefer the system of law and order to the Wild West alternative.

The Japanese DVD for True Lies is anamorphic.

How about next time, post links to those threads instead of an unnecessary comment?

Isn't it the OP's job to see if any existing threads cover such topics first?

I've been here pretty frequently in the last few weeks and didn't see any topics on it, which is why I asked.
