![]() And actually we should probably thank the sec because had Oregon gotten to the championship last year and we had very high championship ratings, they might have kept arguing the system works, don't mess with it. But those ratings combined with the vocal fans probably helped get us a better system. Last edited by supersix4; 10-16-2012 at 04:27 PM. |

All I'm saying is that the SOS the SEC has is largely based on the belief that the SEC is the best in the land.
As long as voters/computer formula makers decide up front that the SEC is ridiculous tough, their SOS will be artificially inflated. It's a loop. The SEC is great therefore SEC wins are too. SEC wins are great because the SEC is great. The top of the conference is not arguable as anything but great. The place where the contention exists is in the middle of the conference. This is where the Auburn starting as a top 10 team grates on people. *EDIT* It was _shocking_ that the Big 12 was considered a higher SOS last year. Because it means that in spite of the advantage the SEC starts with, some of the SOS calculations still were forced to conclude that the SEC wasn't all that. Not all of them mind you. As I already stated at least two of the computers still had the SEC on top. And in spite of it all, THAT was the year that the voters decided they wanted a championship rematch. In what was very clearly a down year for the SEC mid-pack. Last edited by Terjyn; 10-16-2012 at 11:45 PM. |

I don't pretend to understand every aspect of all the computer models used in the BCS, but their equations seem only to care about wins and losses, not how sexy a conference is. |

If the SOS from a computer, for example, is based partly on poll rankings, the SOS, even calculated by math, will favor the SEC. Since the computer formulas are not released to the general public, I can't break down the problem item by item. I can tell you there is zero chance Alabama deserved to be the 2nd toughest schedule in the nation last year like one computer had them, unless they were including the belief that the SEC schedule was strong because the SEC was strong. |

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that these computer formulas set out to favor anyone.
Take Sagarin's as an example though(I often use Sagarin's ratings as examples because he's far more open about his methodology than most). In Sagarin's formula you get "bonus points" for beating top ranked teams. Sounds great in theory. Except that he ranks the teams for the first time before they've ever played a game. Now he gives early weeks less credit, recognizing this is a weakness in his formula. But at the same time it can't be argued that even the final standings are not influenced some by the starting standings. Even though this is an impartial computer solving math problems. |

1. If Florida beats South Carolina they'll almost certainly just expand their #2 spot over Oregon. 2. If Florida loses and Kansas St. beats West Virginia the #2 spot in the BCS ranking will be very close between K-State and Oregon. 3. If Florida and Kansas St. both lose Oregon is probably the clear #2 in the BCS rankings. |
