Gotta say, those 4k77 shots look outstanding. Shame they couldn't have looked more like that. They have the brightness of the 2011 transfers, but the sharpness of a 4K release.

I love that all the star fields were recomposited in 4K on the OT. Opening crawls, through windows in ships, etc.

Cools caps, thanks. I've quoted the 2 I find particularly nice and improved. I like the newer, less contrast burned grade and the improved levels of detail (which I presume is all going to be even more striking on the 4K discs) but yikes, that's definitely another level of DNR going on on ESB, seems to be quite heavy on the walkers for example.

I'm not so sure about the decision not to buy now... I do like the grade and detail in these caps, DNR be damned.

If you look at the cap with Vader and Boba Fett, there is some detail on Vader, to Vader's left of his control buttons, that is hidden on the top 2011 BD but clearly visible on the 2020 BD. However, there is detail in the window to Cloud City on the 2011 BD that almost appears clipped on the 2020 BD.

I think it's still there without clipping, just hazier because of the lower contrast of the grade. Might be different looking again in HDR.

Talk about an about face. Those new set of caps have me changed from not wanting it at all to fighting with myself to justify the price.

Since I only own Last Jedi in 4K, still have to buy Rise of the Skywalker, and the rest on BD only, that helps me justify it since I can offset some of the cost in my mind.... I wish Solo and Rogue One were in there as well just to make it complete, but I already have those as well (4K and 3D respectively).

I wasn’t expecting that much of a difference. I much prefer the warmer greyscale on the new releases. I really need to watch the UHD’s.

How does the 4k77’s greyscale compare to the UHD’s?

the snow looks better in the older screenshot...white snow versus green show...sort of reminds me of the LOTR Blu-ray when a big deal was made about the new color timings

Hoth is finally the right colour (laughing at the person who cried saying it was always blue THanX loser)
But the DNR ruins it, also the shit versions of the movies.

Blue snow, not white. Just a different bias. New ones looks nicer IMO (apart from the DNR), especially if you weren't directly comparing.

The first thing I thought when I saw the screen caps was the teal police would be out in droves.

I almost miss the time when I was younger and far less informed/ignorant and never paid attention to things like color timing. But once you "see it" you can't un-see it, and it forever alters the way you look at a movie. Unlike many people, I can't even BEGIN to recall how a film looked in the theater when I saw it (I'm 43 now). I wish I had saved the older tech and movies we had accumulated growing up. I'd be interested to hook it all up and do A/B comparisons live and in-person.

Why are Blu-ray 1080p screenshots being compared in a 4K UHD thread? Shouldn't that be in the standard Blu-ray threads? I would think 4K UHD screenshots should be the ones posted in these threads. What am I missing?

My guess: since the standard Complete Saga Blu-ray thread is essentially old/dead (mostly, at this point), and since these caps are taken from the new discs included in the UHD release...well, they end up here.

I hope the regular thread will be updated, too, but since the remastered OT blu-rays are probably not getting a separate/official release, you'll see most of the comments in here.

I am okay with watching SW on Disney+. The UHD quality of the first 6 films appears to be shite. The best it has ever looked doesn't sell with me as there seems to be too much DNR going on.

Disney can outsource their remastering to other studios and continue living in their own grain free Digital realm.

It is sad that DNR and EE is still there in 2020 and on 4K UHDs.

Has anyone had luck with contacting Disney and asking for replacements for like a dozen titles at a time? Store route, exchange without bringing slips? I pick out the copies with good slips and then I exchange later for battered ones? To exchange but ask to keep original slip over the one on the replacement copy...sigh

I almost never got BDs with scratches!
If you exchange in store, just don't take the original slip. They don't care. If it's an issue just leave the "new" one with them after the exchange.

The reviews on the 4K versions don't seem that good especially for the original trilogy. Is it even worth the upgrade or should just hang onto my Blurays?

It may just be my phone, but while the new images look so much clearer, the Hoth image is green.

Thankfully, I only post on my phone and watch on a real TV.

I can see how some might see a green push to it, but on the the little 24" 1080p Vizio TV I am using as my monitor, it's definitely more white than green.

I do like the blue snow of the older grade, purely from a personal POV and not 'what it looked like back in 1980' or whatever, but it's come about mainly by dumb ****ing luck as those 2004 transfers are slathered in blue, so naturally white objects will skew towards that colour and pink becomes more of a magenta which is why the skin tones looked so oddly tinged. I'd prefer a more neutral grade than either hefty blue or mild teal but in this case the latter is the preferable option overall to my eyes as it's not as destructive to skin tones, snow be damned.

Are the star fields behind the emperor in the throne room in ROTJ still incorrectly focused? It's bugged me for years that the set background is blatantly out of focus (dat anamorphic) but the composited stars beyond are sharply in focus when they should be blurry AF, it looks so amateurish I'm surprised that ILM let it through back in the day, it doesn't just happen once either.

We know that Disnee have form for this, no argument there at all, but these OT transfers were done in 2012 when Lucasfilm was still Lucasfilm so for once it's not the Mouse who deserves the scorn.
