I just got thru watching Journey To The Center Of The Earth in 3D. Granted it wasn't as good as in the theater, but it was still effective in it's own right. The effects worked better than I recall when I first watched the blu. Now I never read the book but I'm pretty sure it differs from the novel greatly. It isn't as clear as some other blus, probably due to the 3D mastering but more than likely better than it's standard dvd counterpart. It is wonderfully entertaining and I will view it again very very soon.

Last Year at Marienbad

Film: 5/5
-second full viewing
-I watched it with the "ghost theory" in mind (written on back of DVD cover). The first 2/3 of the film is hard to make any attempt to "figure out" anything, IMO. Its only in the last 1/3 of the film where they give you some hints, but even those are tough to tie together. Honestly, I was so fascinated (as I was last viewing) with the narration on the hotel grounds, with intricate detail on every aspect, like "chairs with arm rests so deep...", and "carpets so soft that footsteps can't be heard..." I could almost smell the hotel its so hynotically real.
-Also, I can't get over how many "tricks" the director uses while shooting. For example, he'll show character A sitting at a table, move the camera a bit to the left, and suddenly character A and B are at the table, but we have jumped in time one year! without a cut! This guy is a camera magician!

PQ and AQ: 4/5 (great for 1961 film)

-awesome show! thanks Squid again for the recommendation
-slightly preferred Season 2 to Season 1. More emotional and moved faster, as some of you accurately forecasted.
-costume and sets were incredible: 10 foot wide alley ways decked out garment vendors, tables and chairs adjacent to inns, and women dunking laundry in water buckets. you can smell Rome its so good.
-incredible character development and shooting. One technique in particular that struck me: the director would frequently show characters A and B in a scene, character A with expression X when character B is looking at character A, then expression Y when character B is not looking at character A, such as when characters A and B hug. expression Y is more reliable representation of character A's feelings toward character B, and shows how in ancient ROme, as today, people were very reserved, since being open and honest meant not achieving the money, power and prestige they desire. This is just one example of how this great show demonstrates that in 2 millenia, human nature hasn't changed one bit. If you replaced the horses with cars, the messengers with cell phones, etc, the overall nature of greed, lust, etc, is still unchanged.
-Titus and Lucius were incredible and
[Show spoiler]the evolution of their relationship where they took turns watching each other's back was fascinating. The guy playing TItus was incredible, I'm not sure why he's not in more stuff. The emotional rolercoaster Lucius went through, and Titus' rescuing him was just gut-wrenching. Lucius' kids hate for him was understandable, and this briliantly brought in forgiveness, helped again by Titus' role. I'm still not sure why Lucius stayed loyal to Anthony until the end. I guess he takes orders from whoever is his superior, even if that superior ends up being a criminal enemy of rome on the run? Lots of Roman traditions were also fascinating: god cursing, spiritual medicine, the fat news dude, social customs, etc.

-this show's quality is demonstrated in the fact that I know that a second or third viewing will not only be just as good, but will bring lots of other details/themes that I missed the first time

PQ: 3.5/5 AQ: 4/5
Man I really need to get back into this. For reasons unknown, I stalled out and stopped watching towards the end of the first season. Can't wait to start this up again soon!

Can't wait to give this a second viewing. The first time I was but now that I have a better grip on what's (possibly) going on, I think it will be much more enjoyable the second time around.

Au Revoir, Les Enfantes (criterion dvd) (french with subtitles) (1987)

Film: 4 stars (out of 4)

This film won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival and was nominated for best foreign film at the Oscars. It has a perfect 100% rating on RT and Ebert gave it 4 stars.

The film centers around two boys and the development of their friendship in 1943 France, at a Catholic boarding school. The new boy's secret? He's Jewish and is being hidden there. This film is based on actual events of the director's childhood.

This is a strong and powerful film that is so successful because of the two lead performances and its refusal to play into cliches. Enough said--see this film.

Mindhunters - This was my 2nd viewing of this film. This is a pretty good thriller with a very nice cast. It had a decent little twist and nice concept for how the killer planned things.

Film Rating - 3 1/2 stars (out of 5)

Jackie Brown - Already seen this film a few times and was already a big fan of the film. Superb cast and love Tarantino's directing of the film which I normally do anyway. Great performances and even though it was almost 2 hours and 40 minutes it didnt drag at all. The soundtrack is excellent as well. I love this film just as I always have.

Film Rating - 4 1/2 stars (out of 5)

Got Em!!

Watched that a few weeks ago, I really wasn't to fond, I found the characters to be weak, and I felt the movie ran for a long time on empty at the start, there are a lot of things I do like about it, I think the story is the smartest story out of any Tarantino movie. And there's scenes here and there which work for me, we're you see a burst of originality, but the film just doesn't set itself apart from other movies, I think I gave it 6/10.

Your tastes are pretty close to mine for most things so I think you will love it. The humor elevates it. Buscemi, Macy and McDormand are all on top form.

The Crazies (2010)

Very entertaining film, and mixes well with a female companion lol. No seriously i thought the film was good, it wasnt the ordinary cheese i was expecting. I didnt view the original so i cant compare but i can say that this is a neat little horror/thriller. A couple of scenes made me jump and a couple also grossed me out. At the end of the day i can say well done and im glad i got this film for 12.99. Recommended

I have been PREACHING The Fall since it came to Blu-ray.

It is a great story within a story within a story. And the stories are GREAT.

The editing that connects the inner and outer stories is GREAT.

The overlap audio that connects the inner and outer stories is GENIUS.

Is it beautiful to look at? YES.

Are there haunting and deep themes? YES!

Second and third viewings reveal so much you miss the first time.

Everything about this movie is GREAT!!!!!!

I keep screaming for years, telling everyone to see it, and all I hear is, "I plan to get around to it"

Get off your asses and see The Fall NOW!!!

Ebert said "Magnificent!"

Watch the trailer...

Incredibly sad stop-motion for adults. It's about two sad people who become penpals. One's a young girl who lives in Australia and the other a middle aged Jewish man who lives in New York. The color scheme is dreary to heighten the sadness. Lots of bad stuff happens, but there are some laughs and good stuff too. It's actually pretty amusing in a dark sort of way.

Kids probably wouldn't understand it and would be depressed if they somehow did.

Definitely worth watching.
Sounds interesting, will check it out.

If you cant answer those questions, you cant rate the film.

You have to either answer the questions, or, offer your theory on what it all means. In other words, you have to explain the movie before you are allowed to rate it.

Thems da rules brutha.
