Nobody owes you guys anything.

It was your decision to see and purchase the movies numerous times, and/or buy the merchandise. You are free individuals, and there was no clause that said you would own George Lucas, or his properties if you bought something.
Let's get real, shall we?

If someone buys my CD, that gives them the right to listen to my CD. Period.

Seriously doubt they are going to hand them over to Disney for any amount of money. Especially when they know next years release of Episode VII is going to make the first 6 movies even more valuable again.
Fox will be more than happy to ask for a % and let Disney release them.

Now that Lucas is out of the picture there's just too much money to be made for Disney to not release them. Even with restoration costs and % going to Fox.

And, yes, restoration will be difficult because of how the SEs used the elements in the 90s, but technology today can overcome that if someone has the capital to invest in it, and this is a no brainer for Disney to invest in.

I was watching the Restoration Demonstration on Demy's Lola and they recreated dropped frames digitally. Literally cut and pasted the actor and door frame from two totally different frames, rubbed digital magic on them and, bam, lost frame restored. This was the Demy Estate and a couple restoration companies from France hiring Technicolor to work on an art house French film from the 1960s. Amazing what they can do these days.

Star Wars? Throw all the money at it that's needed, because it'll make many times that back. It'll get done.

FOX worked with WB for the Batman 1966 TV series (even if it took 500 years) so I am sure they will work with Disney to get Star Wars out there.

Why would they when the out right own EPISODE IV. It's not even about distribution.

Think about the hardball Fox could play with Disney over this situation. Star Wars isn't complete over at Disney without outright ownership of EPISODE IV and Fox will never give that up.

Disney's going to pay out the ass just to get Fox to agree to distribute EPISODE IV. How much is Disney willing to spend for that?

But Disney can also keep FOX from ever releasing Episose IV again if they want. FOX and Disney are corporations that have to answer to shareholders. The shareholders don't give a crap about who owns what.

How can Disney do that when Fox outright owns the film? Fox has all the leverage.

FOX does not own anything related to Star Wars. They have distribution rights. Lucasfilm/Disney own the copyrights to the films, characters, merchandise, music etc.

My understanding of the entire situation was when Lucas went back to Fox for the merchandising rights and ownership of the sequels (because Fox didn't think anything of that would be worthwhile) , he gave up complete ownership to EPISODE IV.

Fox owns distribution rights to the Prequels and EPISODES V and VI til 2020. But, EPISODE IV remains with Fox forever.

OK, I could be wrong about this but I think that when Lucas went to FOX about the prequels he gave them a limited deal for distribution until 2020 for the rights back to the original Star Wars.

No. Lucas just gave Fox the first bid on the distribution rights to the Prequels and of course Fox did whatever Lucas wanted.

Yes, Fox looses the Prequels and EPISODES V and VI in 2020 but never EPISODE IV.

Now, Fox can work on a new Blu for that film but they would have to obviously work with Disney on it, considering they own LucasFilm.

Yes, The Art Of The Phantom Menace is an incredible book. The makers of the new films could do a lot worse than to revisit the unused concepts for both the OT and the PT. Remember Iain McCaig's chilling drawing of The Sith Witch for Episode One? Lucas had given him an assignment: draw your worst nightmare. What McCaig came up with was just too horrific for the film and Lucas had to pass on it.

A female villain was something McCaig continued to push for and whilst The Clone Wars had one or two female baddies, the films have yet to do so. Let's have a female villain.

How about this for an idea? After the events of ROTS, Vader takes on a female apprentice, his intention being to overthrow Sidious - betrayal being the way of the Sith. Then Vader finds out that he has a son and all bets are off, he cancels his apprentice's training, tells her to leave and that he will not pursue her but, if their paths should ever cross, he will destroy her. She goes into hiding and only after the fall of the Empire does she reveal herself. Her goal, to take revenge on the man whose existence prevented her from becoming a true Sith: Luke Skywalker.

It's got to be better than a detached hand falling out of the sky.

The 2020 thing is for every movie except Star Wars. They have an in-perpetuity deal to all form of Star Wars releases, but you're right about the actual ownership changing hands during the 1998 prequel deal. They'll keep releasing it, but they don't own the movie itself. The copyright on the theatrical release of the SE of Star Wars still listed Fox as owner, but every release since the 1998 deal has listed Lucasfilm as owner.

Aye. Fox owns the - distribution rights- of ep IV in perpetuity, but starting in 2020 nothing else.

I imagine that in this condition Fox alone can't even do a re-release as they would have to use new materials for marketing... Eventually Fox would be well advised to either sell the rights back to Disney/ Lucasfilm, or work a deal with them to get a % back on any re-release.

They have been already been remastered and the deals are done...Im sure we will be getting official word soon. We keep going back over these distro rights and if Lucas had any say. Lucas had no say, he sold his say for 4 Billion dollars (and by having no say he can save face). My goodness that's the end of the subject.

Everyone wins:
1. The studios will make $$
2. ORIGINAL fans will be happy!!!
3. SW Completist will be happy!!
4. Lots of Blu Ray .com board members will be happy!
5. Original Trilogy Board members will be happy!

Everyone wins except those that didn't want them out because they mess up their SW world that they have created.

Lets jut hope JJ can come close to living up to the holy grail. A real fear I have is that the older cast is used just to break in the newer cast kinda like the new TV show Dallas. Sadly the newer cast is not nearly as interesting so keeping my fingers crossed.

This is the Episode VII thread. Stop talking about all the other episodes and rights and what not. You people are pathetic.

I think there's inevitable crossover when talking about Star Wars films. Some people live to discuss the release of the so-called UOT. God know what they'd do if it ever were released; they'd have to find something else to moan about.

I wonder how long before the release of the film the merchandise will start rolling out? I remember when The Phantom Menace action figures first went on sale there was a line coming out of Wal-Mart at midnight. They had the shelves covered in black cloths and then at midnight unveiled everything. Had them roped off too. It was like Elvis or The Beatles were behind there.
