I definitely re-watched Howl's Moving Castle, Pom Poko and Spirited Away. I might've re-watched Totoro and Princess Mononoke, but not certain (was like 4 years ago). For the first time I saw Nausicaa, Laputa, Porco Rosso and Grave of the Fireflies. Was fun, some surprises. I'd seen Spirited Away before and wasn't a huge fan, but seeing it in cinemas I enjoyed it a lot more, idk why. Nausicaa surprised me; I wasn't expecting much because of how old it is now, but I really liked it. I didn't like Grave of the Fireflies though, I think all the hype I'd heard around it over the years built it up too much, I didn't really enjoy it. |

As much as I prefer the FUNi dubs, I agree. Those dubs are a nice option if you want the most consistent experience in English as possible, since they obviously go with the 3.0+1.0 dub, and have Amanda Winn-Lee reprising Rei from the ADV TV series dub and original Death & Rebirth / End of Eva dubs, along with some other cast members. I was rewatching them recently, and while 1.11's Prime dub starts off pretty shaky, it's fine by the end of the film for some odd reason (it really sounds like Allison Keith was sick when she started recording), 2.22's Prime dub is solid enough, and 3.33's is about on par with FUNi's (mostly because FUNi was restricted more by Khara at that point).

Nope not for me. If they have the Funi dubs and the Amazon ones as an extra fine, but the Amazon ones have to be one of the worst dubs in the last decade. Sure it gets better from the first movie to the last, but I don't consider going from bad to barely mediocre to be a worthwhile or even an enjoyable achievement. Funimation put out imho many ok-ish dubs in their time, but the Eva dubs were one of their best efforts and it was notable. It will be a shame if those become a lost dub. I won't be getting rid of my Funi discs.

Honestly, I would love it if each film had a bonus disc containing an alternate version. But maybe GKIDS will only do it for the Collector’s Editions.
1.11 would have a bonus disc containing the FUNimation dub/sub of 1.11 along with 1.01, which has both FUNimation and Amazon Studios dubs and subs. The main disc would be Amazon Studios only. 2.22 would have a bonus disc containing the FUNimation dubs and subs of 2.22. 3.333 would have a bonus disc containing 3.33 with all three (FUNimation Theatrical/FUNimation Home Video/Amazon Studios) dubs and subs. The 3.33 theatrical dub is especially important to me, as that dub is considered lost media, since FUNimation didn’t even include it as a bonus like they did for the theatrical subs. 3.333 would only have the Amazon Studios dub and sub. 3.0+1.11 would have a bonus disc with Evangelion:3.0 (-46h) and 3.0+1.01 (the streaming/theatrical version), but 3.0+1.01 would have to be compressed to just above streaming-quality to fit on the disc with all the other bonuses. Both versions will only have the Amazon Studios dub and sub. I’m still disappointed that Amazon Studios did not submit 3.0+1.01 for a Best Animated Feature nomination last Oscars. I think Eva winning the award (which was very unlikely) would have caused as big of a storm as the infamous slap, but in actually good way. Imagine, an anime/indie release winning, a 2D animated film winning, a non-Disney film winning, and a mature animated film winning. And Evangelion winning the Oscar instead of Disney’s biggest film since Frozen. That would probably fix the reputation of the Oscars after Best Animated Feature essentially became the “Let’s Give Disney Free Oscars Every Year” award. I wouldn’t have been surprised if Ralph Breaks the Internet (one of Disney’s worst animated films) actually won Best Animated Feature instead of Sony’s Into the Spider-Verse. Evangelion winning Best Animated Feature would have been the Parasite moment for the Best Animated Feature category. Last edited by Hydra Spectre; 12-14-2022 at 09:48 AM. |

Evangelion most likely wouldn't have even been nominated last year, and only a very small handful of Academy members would have even watched it. Years ago they changed the nomination process to all members can vote on anything instead of only people in that category (Ex: Animation members pick animated nominees), that's how you got The Boss Baby and Ferdinand nominated while movies like The Lego Batman Movie, A Silent Voice, and In This Corner of the World didn't get nominated.

Even if they watched anime, they wouldn't vote for it because animation is a mindless genre to children to them. They do not respect animation as a storyteling medium, they've shown this countless times. It will take decades for this to change as younger people are more appreciative of animation, and when many of those end up in the Academy themselves, change will finally come, hopefully.

Got to enjoy 3+101 over the weekend, what a bittersweet experience. So amazing to finally see Eva in the theater, I remember praying I could do so when 1.0 was releasing. I like GKids, I just wish there was an option to not have song lyric subs on. Especially when they put it at the bottom, sometimes its hard to keep track of whos saying what.

What are the chances of 3.0+1.11 would be an extended cut of the film?
I am thinking it is likely, as some scenes were apparently cut due to production troubles during COVID-19. Maybe they would restore those deleted scenes into the film for the Blu-ray release. I am actually hoping that 3.0+1.11 would be one of the very few animated films to make it past the three-hour mark, and the very first one not based on a video game. There were already movies based on Kingdom Hearts (specifically 358/2 Days and Re:coded) that were each over three hours long. The Metal Gear Solid 2 comic book adaptation was also adapted into a movie (included with The Legacy Collection) that was 181 minutes long. And there was an MGS3 movie (included with pre-orders of MGS3: Subsistence as a bonus) that was a whopping 208 minutes long, even longer than Seven Samurai and the theatrical cut of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. |

The reason that I believe that there will be new scenes is that 3.0+1.0 already got a retouched version as 3.0+1.01 three months after its theatrical debut (i.e. March 8, 2021 -> June 12, 2021) so another new version in the form of 3.0+1.11 likely would require new scenes to justify its existence. Conversely, the reason that I believe that there won't be more than five minutes of new scenes instead of the 25 required in order to reach a hypothetical 180 minute run time is because of Khara's decision to create "Evangelion 3.0 (-46h)", whose runtime I infer will be somewhat substantial due to it being the only bonus feature that's been announced to date. |

This is a bonus that none of the licensees that got the "Anime Limited editions" managed to get AFAIK. It is included however in the Dynit, Dybex, Selecta and the Korean sets.

That's not the first time that other international licensees got Evangelion bonus content that the US/UK/AU didn't, as Dynit (IT), Dybex (FR), and SelectaVision (ES) managed to get "Explanation of Evangelion 1.01" for their respective 1.11 Blu-ray releases.
At least on the Dybex disc it consists of a clean 1080p encode of the 1.01 cut (albeit at a relatively low ~15mbps variable bit rate and lossy Dolby 5.1 Japanese audio), along with French soft-subs translating the original Japanese hard-subbed captions that were used on the Japanese 2-disc Limited Edition DVD. Note that not even Japan has any version of 1.01 on disc in 1080p, which I find very interesting in its own right. Unfortunately I don't know if the soft-subs for Dybex's rendition of "Explanation of Evangelion" are forced (i.e. non-removable via the menu) or not, as I've only managed to obtain a lossless remux of the bonus feature itself and not a full BDMV of the entire disc in its own right.
