That's exactly what I thought when the reviewer mentioned that he no longer had to crank up his volume to attenuate the sound on this disc.

The image quality is fantastic. It's superior to any other version, in my opinion.
Can someone list the folly and missing effects for intrepid to check?

Whoever is able needs to check if it doesn't have the same color space issue as Prince of Darkness and They Live. Pickin this one up hinges on that 4 me.

Biggest ones for me are the thunderclaps as 1978 begins (completely different on the earlier surround mixes vs the mono) and the stinger as Michael’s head darts up behind Annie in the car (the mono had a high-pitched chime in the sound effect that has been missing in every surround version since).

Not yet. Per their email last week, the orders that included posters and vinyl were supposed to start shipping "early (this) week," which is why I'm surprised I haven't seen any movement on my order yet. I don't think Wednesday and beyond is still considered the early part of the week.

Criterion LD’s mono track obliterates this UHD. LD sounds so much better it’s not even fair. More in a bit…

I've been becoming much more interested in original audio since I have started to get into 4K releases, and I do get it - especially when it comes to replaced sounds. I've been following the drama/trauma over the mono track for weeks now, and even I as a newbie to caring about such things was prepared to be a little disappointed.

Then I got a whiff of this Atmos track. I don't even HAVE Atmos, it just folds down into Dolby HD 5.1 for me, and all I can say is WOW. The new track is FAN-F'ING-TASTIC.

In the opening car scene in the storm - OMFG...I almost wanted to cover my head because I was afraid I was going to get wet. Even without official Atmos, it sounded like I was surrounded in a monsoon above and around me.

I'm sure the experts will weigh in, but man - from my bumpkin point of view on this, this is one of the most fantastic sounding tracks I've ever played. I feel like a lot of love, care, and attention went into this mix - this may not be how people experienced it in 1978, but holy crap - for a movie that relies so heavily on sound, I feel like I'm watching it all for the first time between the new picture and this amazing sonic experience.

I hate to say it, but...mono who?

In one sentence, this Scream! UHD is the best and definitive version of this movie. This has the best and most accurate to film colour grade out of any other home video release. The original mono is nowhere near as good as on the Criterion LD. But that’s not enough to dethrone this as the ultimate version. My biggest problem here is the same as with virtually all other UHDs, HDR. HDR sucks. It’s a horrible misused and misunderstood tool. It makes the picture too dark. This is inexcusable. Other than that, this is a super release.

That bodes especially terribly for this not being as revisionist of a mix as I’d feared/expected. Maybe it sounds good, I don’t have the disc…but it shouldn’t sound like you’re “surrounded in a monsoon”. It should sound like a steady rain with a few thunderclaps. The former smacks of “let’s fill up the soundscape because we can” rather than “let’s show the restraint that the context of the scene calls for”. Hopefully I’ll be as enamored with the Atmos as you are (and I’m frankly hoping to be since any hope of the mono track being unmolested are now about as likely as Michael Myers staying dead), but I’m not holding my breath.

Yeah, I'm just gonna say it. I can't appreciate HDR or see what everyone say they see. To me it just looks way too dark and the colors kind of desaturated. Maybe it's my set, maybe my taste for PQ sucks, maybe both, all I know it's not for me.

Desaturated and too dark is exactly right. These are not opinions, but facts. Each decade has its own style and it reflects the mental state of humans in general. Desaturated and dark is very accurate to the current times. And hence it reflects in art. Similar to the decade plus of teal and orange. Unfortunately, most of these movies we talk about are from the 70’s and 80’s, incredibly bright and colorful times. It’s inexcusable and unfortunate that this art gets dulled down like this. Hopefully this stupidity will too pass. These mastering technicians should look in the mirror, you guys are lame, boring, and miserable. Find an inspiration please, or go do something else.
