You know...something occurs to me looking at the last comparison shots (on page 389). And I’m not the first person to say this by any means, but there seriously is a ton more to a satisfying transfer than fine object detail. What I’ve seen of these UHD’s does NOT impress me. And that’s an absolutely incredible shame, because believe me, I’m the target demographic for something like this. But the new shots just look so sterile, so wiped away of character and life, and so...joyless that I just find them difficult to get excited about. Yes, there is more detail in the new shots. But they’re also missing the vitality of 4K83’s grain, the vibrance of its contrast (arguably an HDR > SDR issue), and the nuance of its imagery. Just take a look at Vader examining Luke’s lightsaber. Both Blu-ray’s just have a digital look to them that screams that they’ve been tinkered with. The first is edge enhanced, and the second has banding. The 4K83, while not as “crisp” around the edges, looks totally effortless and, well, “correct”. I don’t know why it’s so difficult to get these films right. You’d THINK that if for ANY series, putting in the effort on these would be a priority. I’m extremely glad that some people are enjoying these releases. If you prefer them, awesome. I’m not here to tell anyone that they’re wrong. But personally, I’m sticking with 4K83. No, it doesn’t look “as good”. But it — somehow, to me — also looks “better”. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the Disney UHD looks like a digitized product. Every frame of 4K83 is pure love, made by and for fans who still remember the original magic. Just my two cents.

Imagine how soul crushing it must have been for the people who worked on these transfers and didn't have any say in the matter. That screenshot with Luke's lightsaber a few pages back is shocking. It looks like a video game.

So they make the image a little darker and pass it off as a 4k master?

Well put and I fully agree.

Anyone who likes these Disney UHDs and is content with them, nothing wrong with that. I'm glad for those that are able to enjoy them.

I'll be sticking with 4K77, Despecialized Empire (until 4K80 arrives) and 4K83.

And who knows, perhaps someday we'll see an official release of the OT which will satisfy everyone.

Finally pulled the trigger on the individual releases via the Target sale after mulling things over for a bit.

Already have Last Jedi/Solo/ROS on UHD and was able to pick up all the rest, including Rogue One 4K + the Target exclusive signature edition of Sleeping Beauty, for just under $200 shipped.

Not sure why anyone would opt to pay an extra $50 for the Best Buy set unless they’re just really in love with that album style packaging.

WTF...
Fake 3D tinkering / warping with digitally moved objects on the 2D UHD of "Attack of the Clones"...
Disney's new 4k UHDs are dog shit.

Anyone know of a protective case I could get for the Skywalker Saga boxset?

Sorry. not sure this has been asked, and I am tired of going through posts about if/when there orders are gonna be shipped and when they received them.

Anyone know for sure if the single releases of Solo, TLJ and ROS going to get the same classic slips? (very dumb decision IMO for them not to be released with them already) If not, do the titles on the spines line up the same as all the ones with the classic look slips? I don' want the box sent, hate the packaging, but I am kind of OCD when it comes to uniformity. I may just wait for the inevitable steelbook set, but also want R1 and Solo. But if the current spines dont match, that will bug me.

Thanks

Looking at Padme's hairdo - it goes into a fan shape behind the goldy ornament, and I can see indivdual thin braids making up that fan shape. Not visible on the other shot.
Likewise the moles on both sides of her face and the crease that runs a short way across the centre of her forehead.
Perhaps the ps4 does not show me what you are seeing via pc?
You see the moles more crisply on the blu-ray screen cap above than on my 35mm scan pic? But really the main thing is the pop and vibrance, the detail shifts between 35mm having more and blu-ray, but the vibrance and pop, huge difference.

You seriously think the blu-ray screen cap I show above has more contrast and pop than the 35mm scan shown there??? I mean just stick them in photoshop and you can measure hecka lot more pop on the 35mm scan. I don't understand.

I'm not so sure about the decision not to buy now... I do like the grade and detail in these caps, DNR be damned.
I wish I could recall what the AT-AT scene colors looked like in 1980.
Can't recall. My vague, vague, feeling is like neither, but closer to the 2020.

On the new transfer of A New Hope, I was thinking the Strom Troopers' blaster bolts seemed a tad more translucent, but I wasn't sure. I'll run it again and watch for the angry, white cores in the green zappers from those growling TIE Fighters and weigh in after...

There are more striking examples... One wonders why they couldn't, didn't draw a transfer for this release which wasn't altered for the 3D version... Correction: See next two posts.

These are different frames. Look at the full screenshot. Watto's mouth is open in the 4K frame and closed in the other, and the white box is being carried by a pit droid, behind watto in the frame, which is why it's in different spots in the comparison, because they're not the same frame.

It's more having the continuity of these characters, rather than having a new central baddie literally appear out of nowhere in each film.

Even so, there are several others which ARE the same frame and there's some serious strangeness going on at the sides of the image. Clones still looks like reheated shit any way you slice it, though.

Is there a chance Disney will release the new Blu-ray Discs on their own, or am I better off just buying the 2019 reissues?

I saw an image somewhere of a blu-ray only version of the set. It might be a UK exclusive?
