That drives me insane!

So is the consensus that if you live in Japan the cheapest way to get all those blurays is Amazon?

Awesome collection Jose! I'm hoping to have all those titles once the yen to dollar ratio comes back down to Earth!

Thanks to your pic of the bonus goods there I was able to find some info about it (in Japanese of course):

http://disney-studio.jp/news/index_detail.jsp?id=1785

From what I can tell it's called a "Family Leisure Sheet" which they recommend taking with you when you go to the ocean or the mountains for a family outing. So it probably is something akin to a picnic blanket. It also says that not all stores are participating in the promotion. Here's hoping amazon is!

I don't live in Japan, but online it certainly seems to be the cheapest, 5200 yen with free domestic shipping. I just have my buddy turn around and send them air mail for another 500 yen or so. When I did live over there it was tough to get anything lower than MSRP, don't know if that's changed.

When I ordered my seven titles from Amazon, they each came out to about 4,700 each. Shipping was around 3,800 - worked out to just under 37,000 yen total, or about $466 USD, or about $66 each. Every time I checked subsequently, the prices were around 5,200 each. Don't know how I got so lucky.

Prices as displayed on AmazonJP's product pages include sales tax. When they ship them outside Japan, the sales tax is not charged. I don't recall what the sales tax percentage is, but that probably accounts for the difference in what you paid versus what you saw later... I don't think that Amazon changes the discount on the Ghibli stuff all that often, but it's not like I watch the pricing. ;p

Or maybe it was something else that's not coming to mind at the moment. ^^;

My girlfriend and I have a date with Totoro tonight. Anyone watched it yet?

I tested it out on my TV yesterday and it looks so bright and full of life. Amazing.

Yeah, that's about "average" for the encodes for Studio Ghibli's pre-digital films. Here's a comparison of those released to date:

Nausicaa - 39548 kbps
Grave of the Fireflies - 3514X kbps
Laputa - 33342 kbps
Totoro - 34629 kbps
Whisper of the Heart - 32922 kbps

Hopefully this trend will continue with the other pre-digital films like Kiki's Delivery Service and Princess Mononoke (which was only 10-15% digital).

Great information man!
So, I'll use them in my next picnic with the family!
Take care!

If anyone has a chance to check I would love to know if the Korean track for Totoro has dubbed lyrics for the opening song or if it plays in Japanese. You don't need to speak Korean, just checking if it sounds the same as the Japanese track or not would be enough info. In the audio menu just select 韓国語.

Sorry to disappoint, but the song is still sung in Japanese.

This is old news by now and everyone on here probably know this by now but, apparently, Hayao Miyazaki's new film is about the man who developed the Zero Fighter. Should be interesting.

I wonder what Takahata's new film is about.

Re-watched the amazingly beautiful Only Yesterday last night. Might make my top five, have to think about it. It sure is crowded up there.

Takahata's new film is supposed to be an adaption of the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter... Not sure if that's been confirmed or not.

Agreed! Definitely my favourite Takahata film. A wonderful slice of life that's great for when you just feel like relaxing. It's got a solid fifth spot on my list.

I don't get why this got the news again. Well, I do... because some animators twittered about it... but THAT was the news (that they tweeted about). It was already known that Miya-san's film was gonna be about Jiro. Not sure why that hadn't news hadn't reached western countries before though...

Well, Takahata already spoke about that at Locarno some years back (when I was still updating GhibliWorld.com ), but the real official announcement is said to come at the end of this year.

I would have loved to see that Porco Rosso sequel that was rumored some time ago, but I'm just happy that Miyazaki is doing a film centered around flying again. We all know how much he loves his imaginary flying machines (see what I did there? ), so I'm hoping for something really spectacular.

Well, that Porco Rosso sequel was something misunderstood and overrated. Someone (i think GhibliBlog) took it as correct news and it made people think a Porco Rosso 2 film was coming. The things that were actually said never referred to it being a movie or comic and if I remember correctly it was actually about Miya-san's manga on Jiro. Anyways... you know how it works when people in are in a circle and person 1 tells something to person 2, and 2 to 3... and so on.

"Imaginary flying machines"... I get it. hahaha

Sorry for posting old news guys, I'm a bit behind but I don't speak/read Japanese so I guess that's why. Never would've seen that beautiful piece of concept art (EDIT: It's from the manga, right?) otherwise though, so it was well worth it. Thanks for posting it!

I don't suppose the Jiro Manga has been translated to English? hehe

I'd be interested in getting it in Japanese if it's still available. (at least I can look at the art) If anyone knows, please post the title of the Manga.

First answer: nope
Secondly: I guess you never checked the items I did on it. Check GhibliWorld.com/news.html and search for Kaze Tachinu. Did several posts on it so you have to scroll down.
