Josh Trank apparently likes working with him the same way Wes Anderson loves him some Owen Wilson and Bill Murray.

Quite frankly it's really no different than any other director who automatically casts their select actor into a role.

I'm taking a wait and see approach.

No it's different because it's a comic book movie! No other director has ever done this kind of casting before this movie! :sigh:

Maybe he was charismatic and talented enough to carry the role. Maybe he made a good impression on the casting director, and he/she thought he would play well with audiences. People actually do have characteristics beyond their skin color, and that should be the criteria for casting decisions.

As to your last statement, what are you trying to say? 3/4 of the lead actors are white, you're bent out of shape because that's not white enough. Now you're implying racism from those who don't mind the casting decision?

Not at all, but if you're just going to dismiss something that's being posted to hopefully offer a different perspective on the subject, then that's being ignorant.

Okay, but the reason I posted it is because the writer put it all in better words than anyone else here has so far, including myself, and because he is a person of color, unlike almost everyone here that has made comment on the topic. As I said, I just posted it to offer a different perspective on the debate... and because I do agree with him.

That's just the way it is anymore, no matter what thread it is. 1% actual discussion of said topic, 99% fanboy bickering. It makes it so hard trying to keep up with actual updates that are worth reading.

I don't even care about the casting anymore. This thread has become a bunch of tiresome ranting..... myself included. If they can make a great FF flick, more power to 'em. If it rocks, I'll certainly admit it. Hell, one of the best zombie films ever made is the remake of Dawn of the Dead (from 2004), IMNSHO. But, I'd been pretty downbeat about the film prior to seeing it, mostly because of the running zombies. But that film is simply ****ing terrifying. The change works, and works quite well. So, it's possible that this film will be excellent.

But I have some serious doubts.

Maybe Jordan's Human Torch should team up with Gadot's Wonder Woman in a team-up film?

His being cast as the character, The Human Torch, is simply a bad decision. The bickering about this, rooted in everything from bigotry, to ill-advised political correctness, doesn't help or hurt the fact; bad decision. You needn't change for the sake of change, nor should it be about the director's man crush on said actor.

How about delivering a film for the fans who made this a popular comic, that everyone can embrace as close to source material, as well as quality cinematic effort! Don't try to shock us into this idea. Get rid of that mindset.

Peace.

Trank's decision to cast Jordan as Torch the split second he was given the job was one of the worst knee-jerk/bonehead/ill-advised casting decisions ever.

Because the actor's ethnicity made it virtually impossible for him to change his mind.
Any reason to recast---schedule, not right for the part, poor chemistry with the rest of the cast-----would be seen by many as "giving into bigots"---no matter if there were other factors or facts involved with having to hire someone else.

Because there would be members of the PC crowd who would call any reason given for changing the casting as "a lie" to cover up for the "greedy studio" not willing to outrage a bigoted/intractable fan-base.

Once the words exited his lips--it was set in stone and the only way Jordan was NOT going to get the part was him dropping dead.

That's NOT how you go about casting a $200 million block-buster franchise being given it's second and possibly LAST chance to become successful.

a blue-print on how not to do it---at least maybe something was gained by his inexplicable man crush on an average actor with a couple of movies under his belt and throwing the apparently passé practice of "screen testing" out the window.

It's simple Trank likes Jordan.

So studio says, "Great, get 6-8 upcoming young actors and Jordan and screen test them--then bring in other actors for the other 3 main roles and test the best of each group in different combinations and we'll all (meaning studio honchos, producers and Trank) decide who is best."

Would there be even a fraction of the controversy or debate if the fans knew that Jordan WON the part--rather than was just handed it on a platter.

And since it's the studio's money--shouldn't they AGREE he's best for the part rather than taking a novice director's gut feeling?

I'm 54---I've never had a problem with anybody black, Asian, female, gay you name it getting a job on merit---as the cliché goes--you don't care about your heart surgeons race/religion/gender, you just want the best.

On the other hand in 2014 even the hint of affirmative action and quotas rubs most people the wrong way.

Not testing actors for the role--smacks of that somewhat and I know probably even he didn't want the job for those reasons.
No doubt he would have wanted to hear--"you nailed it, the job is yours!"---rather than, "you wanna play the Torch?"

And please don't say "any decent young actor can play Johnny Storm"---there are 5 main roles (assuming Von Doom) and you want to argue one is so easy and undemanding that "anyone" can play it?

I agree.

Trank thinks he's Hitchcock and he announced he's doing another movie with jimmy Stewart.

No buddy---it's more like "you are director WHO?---having actor WHO?----play a major role in a $200 million reboot of a beloved iconic piece of Americana---that failed once before because of poor casting (of some roles) and studio indifference and lack of solid support."

Nobody cares if you bonded with an actor from the only G-damn movie you made so far.

If Fox hadn't lucked into getting Hugh Jackman to play Logan their hold on the X-Men franchise would be in as deep trouble as this FF reboot is.
