If I was a speculator and bought some to sell, I'd be a bit disappointed. I don't think this is going to be the profit maker some said it was.
I bet if you hold one for a few months and then list it on eBay you could fetch almost double what they are going for now.

I actually have an extra that I am debating on returning, using for a trade or selling on the bay. Not sure what I am going to do yet. I have an extra because I ordered online and was not too sure how it would end up being mailed in a plastic bag...go figure it turned out to be mint.

Absolutely, the secondary market is over-saturated right now with people trying to make a quick buck. I can see these going for $55-$60 on average with some time.

"from doing nearly nothing"... selling something on ebay takes several points of effort and also comes with some other things to consider into the calculations.

1. invest up front
2. create ad with descriptions / pictures
3. package item
4. ship item
5. pay ebay fees (approx 9.5%)
6. pay paypal fees (approx 4%)

I understand EXACTLY how it works, I am someone with nearly 2,000 transaction on eBay and I know supply and demand very well and know that timing can make you a lot of money.

I bought two Playstation 3's in 2006, one to keep, one to sell, and I sold a $600 machine for $1,300, three days after release.

My point is that usually, a hot, rare, collectable item, will see a sizable uptick in auctions, but we're not seeing that at all, even though every Best Buy is practically sold out (if not completely sold out) at this point.

Not when you factor time, gas, etc. I think a lot of the speculators were counting on this thing jumping up to $50 (or higher) immediately.

Maybe so, but most of these speculators have no patience. I have one and don't plan on opening it, but not to sell it, to collect it. I've got a regular case to watch and this one to leave sealed. I'd only sell it if it hit $100 - $150 and that's just not going to happen, and that is fine with me.

This isn't a PS3. They kept making those, therefore over time they lose their value.

They aren't making anymore of these steelbooks, therefore over time they increase in value.

Will more of these steelbooks be shipped or is the existing inventory all there will be?

I had one on hold yesterday, but by the time I got there they had sold it. I was not pleased. They claim to have another one coming for me but I don't believe that. I'll find out next week. If they don't come through, then I'll expect them to make it up to me with RZ points or something.

Last I checked there were only about 60 new ones on eBay, so I wouldn't call it over-saturated. If anything, I'm a bit surprised that is all that is on there.

No way I'd sell mine for $60, but maybe you're right, maybe they do get there. I'm fine with the price staying low, that way some people that couldn't get one in the stores can get one at non-rape prices.

Yes, and I wasn't comparing it to a PS3 sir, I was using that as an example to show you I understand the concept of supply and demand, as well as timing.

I understand they will increase in value, I also understand now is the time when the demand will be the highest and with the entire chain sold out, it stands to reason that if a lot of people wanted them, they would flock to eBay to buy them, and right now, they don't seem to be doing that.

Nope, limited run, supplies exhausted, they are all in the wild and won't be back unless Best Buy orders another batch.

The future shop Iron Man did not get high prices during the first week of sale either. These markets and the rarity of the item have to be proven over time based on supply and demand. If steelbooks continue to be highly valued in the future - a steelbook release like this could very well be as rare as Iron Man future shop. (Yes, I said it) Only time will tell. It could also be 1) reproduced soon 2) an international vendor could release one 3) steels could go down in popularity over time 4) the world could end... I think that is why people are getting excited about it. It has the potential to be something really rare (but equally could be worthless in 6 months)

Yeah I love Steelbooks and bought this one to collect (trying to get more Steelbooks for other movies to build my collection up) and I agree, it's gonna be rare and the value may climb, but I'm gonna be surprised if this hits that $100 mark some were talking about, but who knows, maybe it will.

so I got an email saying my order is in....again. This time I decided to try and call the store. No one answered, so I called the customer service number. Spoke to a very helpful, friendly rep. Explained the situation, he seemed confused by the initial problem as well. So he contacted the store. Not only is it not there, it won't be there this week as I was told previously. It'll be early next week. When he told me that I was like, "really? so then they lied to me in the store then?" he apologized and let me know he's filing a complaint and sending me a gift card for all the issues. I asked him if I was really going to get the item this time, if not to tell me now so I can move on. He assured me the store manager will call me when it comes in and I will get it. I'm telling ya, this is bizarre and I have my doubts about where this is going. Feels like someone is jerking my chain. Atleast the Customer Service guy was nice and legitimately wanted to help me. Voiced his concerns over how the store has handled this. So....maybe next week... *sigh*

Yeah, we should e-mail Best Buy and ask them to produce more .

Or hopefully there will be an European release.

That doesn't matter. The lowest auction price was around 34 dollars.
This steelbook was 25 USD at best buy. That doesn't mean there is 9 dollar profit. A part goes to PayPal and another part to eBay. eBayers won't charge too much for shipping, so another small part to shipping coverage.

Maybe a 5 dollar profit is left. Buying the steelbook, putting the ad on eBay, printing shipping label, packaging and sending the steelbook takes times. Maybe 30 minutes in total. I won't work for 10 dollars an hour. Would you?

Iron Man Play.com was like 40 GBP once it was sold out.
Price was around 10 GBP on eBay. So that's probably a profit of 20 GBP after it sold out (and it sold out later than this steelbook!). I believe 20 GBP is around 35 USD. So 7 times the profit of this one.

It's not the same IMO. Had you kept your $600 PS3 and waited, you would've ended up losing money. You bought something that was in high demand at the time, but eventually not low on supply.

This case is different though, since no more of these steelbooks will be produced. You'll be lucky to ever find one of these sealed for $23 again.

Apples & Oranges. Did the PS3, on launch, have another, more widely produced unit...like ZDT(the nornal amaray version). Nope.
Even keeping with your flawed logic, your PS3 a little more than doubled in 3 days time. That's almost what this is doing, in the same amount of time.

Thank you!

I've already seen 2 copies sell for $74.99.

Actually it's literally insane and I laugh when I see how low people are. The movie is $23 plus tax. eBay fees with PayPal around around 15%. If you sell an item at $40, $6 goes to fees. So now you're at $34 profit on a $25 item, not counting time and fuel costs to and from the store/post office.

It blows my mind how stupid people are who resell.
