Just FYI: Fort Apache (1948) is showing tonight on TCM at 9:15pm... in case anyone hasn’t seen it or doesn’t own it.

I was lucky enough to get to visit the John Wayne House and Museum this week in Winterset, Iowa. I live in St.Louis, so the drive ( 5 and 1/2 hours) wasn’t terrible. Winterset is a great “classic” small town. The real highlight was touring the home John Wayne was born in and lived there until about 2 years old. We had a very knowledgeable tour guide who provided lot a of info about the town and Wayne at that age. The museum is a separate building, in the same block as his home. There is an enormous statue of Wayne that greets you outside the main entrance. What’s also cool is they have giant bricks going along the path with the names of many of his movies, dedicated and bought by families or individuals who make big donations to the museum. Inside right away is an 11 minute film introduced by one of his daughters in a small but very nice theater. It’s a montage of many of his films with clips from many of the most famous scenes.

Next is the gift shop. That had tons of Wayne merchandise...I was tempted to buy a bunch of stuff, but managed to control myself. The bummer was they had tons of his movies...on DVD. Not a single Blu-Ray. The actual museum is next, and I was a little surprised how small it is. It was basically only one large room. They did have a lot of original items, though, which was very cool. Things such as letters, lots of his cloths, lots of pictures, the actual wagon he and Maureen O’ Hara rode around in the Quiet Man, and one of Wayne’s actual cars, parked right in a corner of the room.

I was informed that they are going to begin a museum expansion beginning this Spring...so I would imagine that will add another big room or wing when finished.

Overall, it was a cool experience. It obviously made me want to get home and watch a bunch of Wayne movie on Blu!

I have no words.....
Nine films on three discs, & according to the linked site they're BD-25! I don't know, but think they must be SD (three HD films on a single BD-25 would look...not good). The set comes from Universal, & I think they're all Paramount films, including Hud (1963). Oh well.

You can't go wrong for the price. I have a feeling when you have finished all the later John Wayne, you will also appreciate these....
Unfortunately, you CAN go wrong for the price in this case. I bought this set on based on your recommendation and while I'm happy to have it, potential purchasers should know that Blue Steel is edited. The scene where Wayne is cooking breakfast in his cabin and Gabby Hayes attempts to sneak in on him is missing. There might also be other scenes missing, but that one stuck out to me as egregious, particularly since the film abruptly cuts from Wayne fleeing the hotel in the opening to a meeting of the townsfolk to Wayne and Gabby chumming it up in the cabin. This cut only runs 50 minutes, whereas I understand most of the ones of this ilk to be about 55 minutes. I have a VHS copy (but not on hand at the moment) that I'm going to pull out for runtime comparison. Very disappointing, as Blue Steel is my favorite film of Wayne's from this era.

Does anyone know of a complete copy? Preferably one that also features decent picture quality and isn't a manufactured-on-demand release?

The one movie with John Wayne that I would love to see on 1080p Blu-ray with a spectacular 4K restoration would be the 1956 Western classic THE SEARCHERS. That would really be something to see! The original Blu-ray release had a big problem, which myself and other people who own the disc had experienced: The audio was NOT in sync with the picture, like when someone spoke, the words didn’t match the lips.

Very nice story, thanks for sharing. I'd love to visit one day, but Winterset is not exactly around the corner from Upstate NY. But one day I will get there I'm sure.

I watched the blus of Rooster Cogburn and The War Wagon over the weekend. Universal did a fantastic job with the transfers of both films to HD.

Yeah, Rooster Cogburn I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I’m not a big Katherine Hepburn fan, but she and Duke were great in it. I also really enjoyed watched War Wagon. It was great seeing Wayne and Kirk Douglas together in fun roles. I need to rewatch that one soon!

Not really a John Wayne film, but I’m watching Kino’s “Cast A Giant Shadow” now. Great film and superb transfer by Kino...highly recommended!

Well that sucks. I bought that set brand new at Walmart years ago for $5. Five dollars for 25 movies. So many of these older films are so beat up and jump around (missing a frame here and there) it would not surprise me one bit if all of the films were missing a scene or 2. The only hope we have is that Olive or someone keeps cleaning these up and putting them out but as each day goes by the odds of that happening are growing slimmer and slimmer. This release is listed at 56 minutes so maybe it has the missing scene but for all I know it's blurry as hell, which I hate....

I’ve come to love Duke and his movies in the past 6 months, especially on Blu-Ray.

Alas, due to current financial issues, I have had to sell off some parts of my Blu collection on eBay and Amazon. I hate doing it, but as Duke might say, “ You gotta do what you gotta do, pilgrim.”

So, I’ve sold off the following Wayne Blu’s: Hatari, Wake of the Red Witch, Cahill U.S. Marshall, Train Robbers, Comancheros, Brannigan, Lady From Louisiana, Hellfighters, They Were Expendable, Blood Alley, The Cowboys, McQ, Green Berets, Three Faces West, The Longest Day and Sands of IwoJima.

These were my lesser favorite Wayne Blu’s so I can mostly live without them for now.

Here’s what I have left of Wayne movies in my Blu collection. Hoping and trying to NOT have to sell any of these, as they are my favorite Wayne movies:

She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, Fort Apache, Rio Lobo/ Big Jake 2 movie pack, True Grit, The Searchers, Rooster Cogburn, Rio Bravo, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, War Wagon, McClintock, El Dorado, Hondo, Red River, Rio Grande, Stagecoach, The Quiet Man and the 7 Film John Wayne Collection.

I think I’ve more or less saved the best so far. I’m hoping I don’t have to sell any of those.

Hang in there. As a business owner, I have been through tough times and good times. As Victor Hugo once said, “Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.” Even if you have to sell them all off, you can always buy them again....

At least you had the pleasure of seeing these fabulous films for the first time. That is an experience that I would somehow love to revisit.

Best of luck...hope things rebound for you

Exactly... I'm just glad I have had the wonderful opprotunity to discover John Wayne's terrific films since December. It's my 6 month anniversary almost of becoming a Wayne fanatic and I'm so glad I did

To everyone who has offered me well wishes, I sincerely want to say thank you!

I'm definitely not going anywhere... I visit Blu-ray.com about 10 times a day... so they can't get rid of me with a little current money problems lol.

Here's to more Wayne re-watching and hopefully more Duke movies on Blu-ray!

Thanks everyone!

Just a heads up to Wayne fans on TCM. TCM will be showing several Wayne movies that are currently not on Blu-Ray in the next couple of days.

On Thursday at 1:00 pm central time is Back to Bataan. I’m excited because I’ve never seen this movie at all.

Also on Thursday at 3:00 pm central is Flying Leathernecks...which I’ve also never seen but I believe is available on Blu.

Then this Friday at 7:15 AM central is The Sea Chase... this is also on Blu right now but I haven’t seen this one either, so I’m looking forward to it.

TCM is such a great Channel for classic Wayne movies and movies in general. Here’s hoping it never goes away!
