So... Adrift was better than I remembered, The actors did what they could with it, but boy, are these characters stupid. (Had totally forgotten Eric Dane was in this.)

And then we get to Cage Dive, zero skulls out of five, a film so laughably inept & predictable, it borders on parody. Then it jumps over that border & runs headlong into the abyss. Some bad films are unintentionally funny; Open Water 3 is unintentionally hi-*******-larious. A bad film against which all others can be measured: "yeah, _____ was terrible, but at least it wasn't as bad as Open Water 3".

-Someone's Watching Me! (1978):

Effective early television thriller from John Carpenter -- made just before he jumped into Halloween but aired about a month after it hit theaters -- stars Lauren Hutton as a young woman entering a career directing live television who ensconces herself in a swank new L.A. apartment...unaware that a sicko voyeur across the way is peering into her most intimate private moments. And he doesn't stop with just peeking, either...there are also the vaguely threating notes (not quite enough to have the police -- personified by Carpenter favorite Charles Cyphers -- actually do anything about it), the more-than-vaguely threatening phone calls at all times of the day and night, the disturbing "presents" like photos of dead bodies and an teeny bikini, and even the recording equipment she finds. Fed up with the constant harassment, Hutton, her new boyfriend (David Birney) and her new friend at the television studio (Carpenter's future spouse, Adrienne Barbeau) try to find out who's the creep behind it all. Yet another variation on Rear Window, Somebody's Watching Me! is more modest than Carpenter's big-screen work of the period, and yet certainly shows that his skill behind the camera was formidable even under the constraints of network television, with his trademark elegant camerawork and well-etched characterization. Hutton, with her Alfred E. Neuman teeth, is a strong heroine, and Barbeau makes for an ideal sidekick. One wishes for a little more closure on one character's ultimate fate, and it's odd to see a peak-era Carpenter flick he didn't do the music for (Salem's Lot composer Harry Sukman provides the urgent orchestral score), and yet Somebody's Watching Me! is still an obscure yet worthy entry in his filmography, given new life in Scream Factory's splendid new Blu-Ray.

I probably haven't seen this since the '80's, it did not hold up well.

01/10 - Mandy (2018)
01/10 - Blood Fest (2018)
01/10 - Stay Alive (2006)
02/10 - The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
02/10 - IT (2017)
03/10 - Society (1989)

04/10 – Hellraiser (1987)

Classic. Only my second time seeing this one but I'm in love with it. Top to bottom. The depravity and twistedness of the human characters is what gets me the most, not even the Cenobites. Wildly original and unique. One of the few movies that I'd like to see remade. Christopher Young's score is marvelous and the effects and make-up outstrip the shitty CGI you see so prevalent these days.

PS. Never seen any of the sequels and was wondering which, if any, are worth watching?

I felt the same way about this one. There were some nice moments but some of the "funny" parts fell flat. I think that the editing and pacing were also really bad. It's a shame because it seemed like the kind of thing I would like, and a genuine long lost 80s artifact to boot.

Uh this was ok. The makeup for the zombies was pretty interesting. The characters were so annoying tho. Movie moved kind of slow, but when it picked up it was just mayhem and in all that mayhem was a damsel in distress who had me rolling my eyes so much. The hero guy was a little more tolerable...at least he loved his brother.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) A PG-rated remake is one of the scariest films ever made. I don't believe I've seen another movie which captures paranoia so perfectly.

Van Helsing:

I must admit, there are quite a few things I like about this movie. I like the black and white opening to the movie. I really like the inclusion of a handful of the classical horror movie monster. I really like Hugh Jackman as Van Helsing. And, believe it or not, there's actually a few intense moments in the movie. However, the action is pretty generic, most of the acting besides Jackman is over-the-top and the CGI was pretty bad at times.

Oh, the horror so far this year:

Well, as I said in my review, I found some redeeming qualities. I like it for what it is, a stupid romp with some of the old horror monsters, but it's nowhere near a fantastic movie.

It would be very easy to dismiss a film like this, a low budget 70's horror flick with generally poor acting and an almost nonsensical (certainly illogical) script but hold the phone... the amazing thing about horror flicks made at this time is that they are played totally straight without a hint of humor or tongue in cheek. This movie has a truly creepy and unsettling mood throughout and hits many notes on being a disturbing little flick. It reminds me a little of Messiah Of Evil (an even better film) and I'm glad I added it to my collection!

10/3

*denotes first time watch

*Eraser head (1977) The fxck did I even watch?! This was such an incredibly bizarre, moody, and surreal film. There’s really no story to it and most of it is just things happening. The film does sport some great visuals and shots that I enjoyed.

*The Monster (1925) Lon Chaney plays the insane Dr. Ziska, who’s been inventing elaborate schemes to kidnap victims to use in his experiments. This is one of the earliest “mad doctor / old dark house” type of films with all of its clichés. Even though the film is a horror comedy, it feels a bit off.

10/3 Ghoulies (1985)

Strange as it may sound, it reminded me of A Dark Song. Both movies reference Abramelin (I recall looking the name up trying to better understand A Dark Song) and focus on rituals and summoning. It goes without saying they have a multitude of differences aside from those things. The protagonist here is intriguing because even though he gets tempted by power so quickly he still retains some humanity. Other characters, notably the friends, aren't written very well. There is some cheese and the ending was rushed but overall I enjoyed this very odd magic and monsters entry.

Terrifier I've always thought clowns were disgusting, but not scary. Art the Clown is both. The film is intense, not to mention wet and meaty. It also has a very dumb ending. Still, Terrifier is much better than IT.

Wow! So many post already. It took me several days to catch up on my reading and update my list from all the (hopefully) wonderful recommendations.
I was travelling this time last year and I don't remember if I posted here at all but I did read most all posts and managed to watch 45 horror movies. This year I'm busy with work and moving into a new place so I'm not sure how often I'll be posting but I am reading through the thread, getting many more movie recommendations. Thanks everybody.
As usual, I wont watch a movie everyday but, as always, I will watch more than 31 this month.

10/1
1) The Thing (1982)
2) The Bar (2017) .5
Keeping with the paranoia theme. This is a fairly entertaining look at how people might act if in a horrible situation. Mostly good performances from the cast and pretty well made, if not for a few stumbles.

10/2
3) Upgrade (2018)
Although the setup is completely obvious, the performances, fight scenes and world created made up for any lack of obscurity. Though this doesn't have much in the way of horror it does contain the old "misuse of technology" theme.
