I'm not real sure how reliable this source is but it looks like we may be getting Singin' in the Rain on 4K sometime in 2022 for it's 70th Anniversary.

This is the 4th title in my 4K upgrade wish list to be rumored for release in 2022. (Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation, and Elf)

For this film especially, I’d certainly pay a pretty penny for a steel with that artwork. Sadly, I don’t trust WB enough to stick with that one.

Harris once mentioned something he called "The digital miracle", but hadn't went into details, about a technicolor film (SITR I think) which dupe sections would had being processed digitally to look virtually like camera negatives. I still Wonder if was the Lowry Process.

Singin in the Rain had the camera negative burned in a MGM fire in the 70's, tofether with the Kansas scenes ftom The Wizard of Oz. But if had fine grain positive masters was made years before. A fine grain master have much finer grains than projction prints, and it's able to hold high resolution,, andkeep low contradt (high dynamic range) and this means the final image can hold almost as much details as the camera negative it was shot from. But a lot of this also depends of how carefully the fine grain was shot from camera negative and even how it was developed.

SITR blu ray looks very good, but a few scenes, like the one of Kelly, O' Connors and Reynolds dancing together, that are not very Sharp as the rest of the movie.

Recently Feltenstein had mentioned including the original mono audio for a future 4K UHD catalog title that didn't include it on the Blu-ray, and I suspect it was this one.
