I didn't hear anything about extending the show from 3 to 4 years, but that the fourth season was decided to be the last season quite early on. I DID hear though that the second half of season 3 had a few standalone episodes because of studio interference, to try and entice the casual viewer and increase ratings. However, most people thought the quality suffered and the network agreed it would be best not to interfere with such matters from then on.

Agreed....it turned from one of the best shows on TV to a good/sometimes great show.

From what i read, its not expanding the shows run another season, that caused a loss in script quality. It was a plot that wasnt working. I think it was the medical story, of who lives and dies, with that Doctor who was "killing" people. That plot was dropped, and stories needed to be rewritten, and new ones had to be developed.

The boxing episode, "Rocky in Space", that was the beginning of the end for me. However, i did like the second half of season 4.
I loved that episode SOOOO much.

Off-screen, that plot-thread was the remnant of a mid-season rewrite dealing with Baltar's trial. Initially, it was that Baltar was to have been tried for hate-crimes committed against the Sagittarons during his reign on New Caprica before the Cylon occupation. This was to be supported by "The Woman King," which was already filmed before the rewrite occurred.

It was decided that the arc was ultimately weak, and as such, they needed to find something else to try Baltar with, which culminated in the trial we saw. Unfortunately, like "The Woman King," there were scenes they couldn't go back and reshoot. Here, Baltar was supposed to be implying that he'd give testimony that Gaeta was part-and-parcel of the whole scandal; that Gaeta knowingly signed documents facilitating the crimes.

Gaeta, being the straight-arrow that he is, would of course be innocent, but who would believe him? Baltar would have ensured that if he went down, so would Mr. Gaeta, and that didn't sit well with Mr. No-Good-Deed-Goes-Unpunished. Thus, Gaeta snapped, and attacked Baltar with a pen.

Though even "weak" Battlestar was still 95% better than most of the rest of the shows on television.

Because no way Voyager is above Nine.
Actually, my list is as follows:

1. Star Trek OS
2. Star Trek TNG
3. Voyager
4. Star Trek DS9
10. Enterprise

I never heard of anyone who liked DS9 or Enterprise over Voyager, until now...

DS9 has a pretty healthy following and was/is far more acclaimed than both Enterprise and Voyager. Check out the wikipedia or tvtropes.org pages for DS9, for example. But here in the UK Voyager was watched a lot by most people my age, it seemed to be the one lots of kids I knew caught on TV... and obviously it wasn't as serialised as DS9 so could be watched a lot more casually.

Count me as another who loved DS9, especially the last four seasons.

Really? I thought it was common knowledge among most Trektards that Deep Space Nine was superior to Voyager in every possible way.

I agree...DS9 ended up being some of the best Trek on TV.

Oops. Sorry about getting everyone off topic. I believe you were discussing BSG before we got sidetracked.

I was actually searching around sometime last year about which was the best place to start watching Star Trek and what incarnations would suit me best. I was told since I loved BSG sooooo much, that DS9 would be RIGHT up my alley. I have yet to get a chance to watch any of it, but I keep collecting that same opinion as time goes on.

Finally finished it all up for the first time. Seasons 1 thru 4.5, Razor (Extended), The Plan, The Resistance & Face of the Enemy webisodes...all watched.

It easily ranks as one of the best sci-fi TV shows I have ever watched. Excellent writing, acting, sets...it is hard to find anything worth criticising.

[Show spoiler]Things got a little weird where the main plot - who are the final five - seemed to revolve around....a rewritten Jimi Hendrix song!

You're kidding, right?

VOY is probably the most hated series amongst fans. DS9 was probably the most beloved out of all the nuST series. And even ENT was liked by those who followed it.

Myself, I tolerated DS9, I think Jake Sisko and Nog brought it down somewhat. The same way Wesley Crusher brought down TNG.

ENT was probably the most enjoyable for me for a couple reasons...widescreen, and originality. First time we had seen pre-Kirk era Trek.

As far as the BSG BD set, one thing jumps out at me the most. The CG shots of Galactica. On the DVD set, you could hardly see any detail in the lower superstructure of the ship. In the enhanced resolution of the BD set, you can actually see several decks of yellow lights down there. Even in distant shots of the ship.
[Show spoiler]I'm wondering how Pegasus will look, as well as battle-damaged Galactica after the exodus from New Caprica.
