THE RED SHOES (1948)
This film employs a story within a story device with Moira Shearer playing a young ballerina who joins an established ballet company and becomes the lead dancer in a ballet called "The Red Shoes," itself based on the fairy tale written by Hans Christian Anderson. This is a film which Martin Scorsese, who spearheaded the fund-raising for its 7 year restoration, says has never been matched in cinema and which he considers to be the most beautiful technicolor film ever made. This film did not do well during its initial release but is now considered #9 on BFI's Top 100 British films. Rottentomatoes.com gives this film a 98% fresh rating but it has a 100% fresh rating by top critics on that site. I have only seen this film most recently on TCM HD so I was excited to see the ITV BD release. There is of course the new Criterion BD release but I paid a little bit less than 50% of the cost for this version. From what I've read, this ITV release is slightly redder but I didn't seem to notice a problem on my 60-inch Sony. The Criterion release also has more supplementary material but this disc has some really nice supplements for the price. This is a Region B disc. The video quality is simply indescribable and the word "amazing" simply doesn't seem adequate to describe this 1948 film and the sound and dialogue are likewise very good, although slightly less than the image quality. April Fool's Day - I used to like this film growing in the 80's. It was actually still a decent film although kinda slow in the beginning. I just like that 80'ds atmosphere to most of those horror films. U can always tell when u are watching an 80's horror film for the most part. The music is always great especially when sumthin is about to happen. I was pleasantly surprised to see Amy Steel in this film as I had forgot she was in this. She is maybe my all time favorite chick from the Friday the 13th franchise in which she starred in part 2.
Film Rating - 3 stars (out of 5) Got Em!! |

Thanks to Gandalf, and my ego's ever-present need to one-up anyone, I may need to go to 1/8 (0.125) increments. Here's my formula:
5.0 initial rating - 2*(x/16) for overall enjoyment/experience (x=0 is best, x=16 is worst) - 2*(x/16) for overall acting/directing. 8 points for each acting/directing. (x=0 best, x=16 is worst - combined). - 1 if I've already deducted 4 points and think this deserves a big fat 0 ![]() Example: Gladiator: 5.0 initial rating -2*(2/16) -2*(3/16) -0 =5.0 - 4/16 - 6/16 = 5.0 - 10/16 = 4.375 ![]() |
