THE RED SHOES (1948)

This film employs a story within a story device with Moira Shearer playing a young ballerina who joins an established ballet company and becomes the lead dancer in a ballet called "The Red Shoes," itself based on the fairy tale written by Hans Christian Anderson. This is a film which Martin Scorsese, who spearheaded the fund-raising for its 7 year restoration, says has never been matched in cinema and which he considers to be the most beautiful technicolor film ever made. This film did not do well during its initial release but is now considered #9 on BFI's Top 100 British films. Rottentomatoes.com gives this film a 98% fresh rating but it has a 100% fresh rating by top critics on that site.

I have only seen this film most recently on TCM HD so I was excited to see the ITV BD release. There is of course the new Criterion BD release but I paid a little bit less than 50% of the cost for this version. From what I've read, this ITV release is slightly redder but I didn't seem to notice a problem on my 60-inch Sony. The Criterion release also has more supplementary material but this disc has some really nice supplements for the price. This is a Region B disc. The video quality is simply indescribable and the word "amazing" simply doesn't seem adequate to describe this 1948 film and the sound and dialogue are likewise very good, although slightly less than the image quality.

Movie: 5/5 PQ: 5/5 AQ: 4/5 Supplements: 4/5 Overall: 5/5

Default Spoilers used to keep it compact, sorta...

Toy Story

[Show spoiler]I forgot how clever and funny this film really is. Moreover, I forgot how intense the conflict between Woody and Buzz is. I used to think this first film was duller than the others, but it’s actually thrilling most of the way through, and has a decent amount of comedy. The scenes involving Sid are especially great. I’d still give the edge to the last two movies for being more exciting and having funnier comedy, but the first film is still quite strong. My only complaint is that its age is starting to show (some of these textures are hideous…)

4/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 4.5/5, film: 4/5)

Toy Story 2

[Show spoiler]It’s bigger, bolder, funnier, and more entertaining all around. At its core, this sequel still has a very good story with strong themes. Old familiar characters are still fun to watch, and new characters receive excellent treatment. The graphics are improved; maybe not the best still, but parts of it are still impressive. It’s great.

4.5/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 4.5/5, film: 4.5/5)

Strangers on a Train

[Show spoiler]This fine Hitchcock thriller features a very interesting and thrilling premise, laying the groundwork for a gripping story filled with intriguing (if not all-around quirky) characters. It has good visuals (though I wouldn’t rank it any higher than “Psycho” or anything). What really surprised me is how funny some parts seemed; Bruno was such a freak!

4/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 4.5/5, film: 4/5) We need a Blu-Ray on this pronto! And do I see a remake listed on imdb for 2011?!

The Music Man

[Show spoiler]A fine classic film loaded with all kinds of happy-slappy singing, dancing, and silly antics. There’s hardly a dull moment; every other scene either has some kind of musical number or some really amusing dialogue. The story’s a little underdeveloped, but it has decent characters and one or two interesting themes. Production value is a little fake-looking (especially on the opening train scene, which now shows its age on BD). It is well-filmed and very classy.

My God, Ron Howard is so young…

4/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 3.5/5, film: 4.5/5)

[Show spoiler]
This Blu-Ray is awesome. The PQ looks incredibly sharp and detailed, with very vibrant colors and decent contrast. Some parts show some visual noise, but it’s not terribly distracting. It’s awesome for a film this old. Sound quality is good, especially during the musical scenes when the voices seemed to fill the whole room. A couple of parts seemed to exhibit stereo distortion, probably from the remixing process, but it otherwise did not disappoint.

PQ: 4.5/5, AQ: 4/5

I thought it was ok, not nearly as great as I was expecting it to be

I didn't really like any of the characters, thought the final sequence
[Show spoiler]out on the boat
was WAY too long.

The movie really drug on for me after about the halfway point.

It started off good and moderately interesting but went downhill for me, by the end I was just thinking, "Is it over yet?"

Rating - 3/5

Which is a shame, because I was hoping for it to be awesome.

-Commence the trashing of my thoughts-

I used to rate it the same way, but my latest viewing was rather thrilling.

April Fool's Day - I used to like this film growing in the 80's. It was actually still a decent film although kinda slow in the beginning. I just like that 80'ds atmosphere to most of those horror films. U can always tell when u are watching an 80's horror film for the most part. The music is always great especially when sumthin is about to happen. I was pleasantly surprised to see Amy Steel in this film as I had forgot she was in this. She is maybe my all time favorite chick from the Friday the 13th franchise in which she starred in part 2.

Film Rating - 3 stars (out of 5)

Got Em!!

Thanks to Gandalf, and my ego's ever-present need to one-up anyone, I may need to go to 1/8 (0.125) increments. Here's my formula:

5.0 initial rating

- 2*(x/16) for overall enjoyment/experience (x=0 is best, x=16 is worst)

- 2*(x/16) for overall acting/directing. 8 points for each acting/directing. (x=0 best, x=16 is worst - combined).

- 1 if I've already deducted 4 points and think this deserves a big fat 0

Example:

Gladiator:

5.0 initial rating

-2*(2/16)

-2*(3/16)

-0

=5.0 - 4/16 - 6/16 = 5.0 - 10/16 = 4.375
