Of these, which would you recommend as a good starting place?

I've only seen Le Doulos out of that lot (it is the only Melville I've seen at all actually) but I absolutely loved it. Definitely made me want to see the rest of his films. Definitely suggest checking it out.

My order from Criterion came in yesterday. I'm now the proud owner of Bigger Than Life and Yojimbo/Sanjuro on blu-ray. I even decided to keep Yojimbo/Sanjuro in the box it came with. Looks nice. Now to actually make time to watch them. This summer-like weather is NOT helping.

I would like to comfirm something if anyone can help.

Amazon.ca as Tokyo Story at $54 CAN. Is that the normal price for this one? Is it considered OOP by Criterion?

I don't think there's much for Criterion to really add to these brand new films, so I'd honestly prefer IFC to license through Lionsgate or some other medium-sized studio and just get this stuff out fast - instead of needlessly filling Criterion's release schedule and making the US audience wait so long for it.
Yeah, I understand what you're saying, neo. If I didn't already own the region-B blu-ray of "Antichrist" from Artificial Eye I might be a bit more excited. As it is, though, the Fall season is quite a stretch when the movie has been released in other territories so soon.

It's definitely not OOP from Criterion. You can always check Criterion's site for their price and also Amazon USA's price to compare it to the Canadian price on Amazon right now.

Thanks. Using Criterion directly is not a good idea, they have very bad shipping prices to send to Canada unfortunately. I will check Amazon sometimes with the exchange it can be a good deal. Otherwise I will wait for a sale Thanks for the help

Hey guys,
While I'm new to blu, I have a large portion of the criterion collection on SD. Are there any blu releases with glaring omissions from the SD versions? I know The Last Emperor doesn't have the same versions as the SD, and The Man Who Fell to Earth doesn't come with the book. Any others I should know about? Also, if anyone has The Third Man for about MSRP, I'd be interested. I already picked up Pierret Le Fou.

Yeah, I'm not suggesting you order from either Criterion directly or Amazon USA. I was just wanting to have you compare the American prices on both sites as compared to the price through Amazon.ca right now. That way, you can see if that's a fair price in Canadian dollars after you do the exchange rate.

You can always check Criteron's site. For each release's page, it lists all of the supplements. If anything's missing from either the DVD or blu-ray, it's usually noted down in the supplement listing.

Sorry just read you post again stupid French guy here can't read. I might get it from Amazon, I do that sometimes since US prices are sometimes much better then here in Canada and it's worth it. I will probably wait for the next Criterion sale from N&B or Amazon, it's been a few months now since the last one so I hope one will happen soon

ANTICHRIST! Now 100% sure. Too bad it won't be released until the fall, I was hoping for an announcment next week.

It actually sold, ironically to a bloke in Tokyo.
(there's three Ozu titles out here soon on BD, Tokyo Story is one of them)

Yeah, the BFI releases, right? I have mine on pre-order from Amazon UK already.

Yeah, I'm not pre-ordering though, and hoping for a price drop after a couple of months.
I may even pick them on the second-hand market.

I guess we'll have another "explicit content" sticker...

If you have one (or more) local Borders, may be a copy still sitting on one of their shelves.

I have to say, I think Criterion dropped the ball on this one. Charging people abroad a lot more for these, not replacing the cases in stores, and now this. They have great customer service most of the time, but this isn't their best example.
I send an e-mail on March 5th confirming the total amount before paying and they confirmed it, so on April 2nd I sent the payment (I was moving to a new apartment), now I receive an e-mail saying that they stopped sending the replacement cases abroad...

As I know, Criterion has months planned ahead on releases. So again, if a release was just hinted, means you won't see it for months, sometimes years (with "2 or 3 Things...."). It's been like that for as long as I can remember.

The hint says this fall, and I believe their deal with IFC is short-term (1 or 2 years) for 12 titles, so the IFC titles will go from announcement to store shelf a hell of a lot faster. Maybe that's why the majority have been newly released films, because the new pristine prints don't require time consuming restoration.

I would say that's what Criterion gets out of the deal, 12 titles practically "ready to go" with a bit more exposure (i.e. a bigger audience) than the usual Criterion release.
