4K screens are coming and there are some very interesting developments picture wise. I expect a vast improvement in the next gen headsets. For a first gen headset, it’s a absolute bargain at £249. Best money I have ever spent outside of my HT. I would have paid that for the terrifying Resident Evil alone.

I think we should be seeing super sharp images within the next couple of years.
No one told me, just read some good review of the movie experience in PSVR. The demos I tried were really cool, but I don't play my PS4 Pro much so it didn't make sense keeping it when I found the movie experience disappointing.

But yes, the Kitchen demo for RE7 scared the crap out of me! I would love to experience the full game in VR. Like I said, I will just wait for the next gen headsets to jump back in.

No one on this planet could have stopped me playing RE in VR! Oh and soon Wipeout! .

Unless of course by advocating for these smart goggle thingies you help to kill TVs and projectors.

Well considering I am shopping for a new 4K tv and hopefully projector, I don’t see how. .

This has little to do with anything, but I am sad to have learned that Oppo is going belly-up.

https://www.oppodigital.com/farewell.aspx

They made the best players I have ever owned, but the public seems to prefer cheap every time.

Yeah that’s a massive shame. Although not surprising considering the disregard the masses have for quality. Cheap and cheerful always wins the day sadly. Sad times.

You can construct these bizarre Rube Goldberg scenarios under which buying a movie from iTunes will inevitably lead to the death of TVs and projectors but you don't see how supporting a direct competitor to TVs and projectors could lead to the same thing.

Interesting.

I've never been able to pull the trigger on an Oppo but I'm sorry to see them go. I have to say, though, I always kind of bristle at these 'I guess J6P is too cheap to support a quality product' narratives that pop up whenever a higher product line or manufacturer falls on hard times.

Yes, Oppo had to compete with a lot of cheap players but they also had to compete with a lot of other quality players that didn't cost like five hundred bucks a pop

That had to be a tough sell when the overall player market wasn't shrinking let alone now.

Yes that's true. The cheapest model (in the UK) I think is around £600 which, if you can afford it, is reasonable for a really top machine. However as you say, there are other excellent players available for slightly less money. I would avoid bargain basement players as ultimately you get what you pay for.

VR is NOT a direct competitor to TV sets and projectors. It’s a nice add on for a gaming system.

In a landscape with $3500 and up OLED TVs and even a $25,000 Sony 4K projector, a $550 4K disc player did not seem that extravagant. I have spent that much just on movies in a single month. There has always been a niche for high end video and audio products; it is sad to see that such an excellent player as the Oppo could not survive within it.

You remind me of my days working in a photographic retailers many, many years ago. I was staggered at some customers who would spend a fortune buying a top camera body, and then buy a really cheap crap lens to go on it, not realising that actually it's the lens that produces the image.

It’s true though. It’s a false economy going through two or three players when one will last the lifetime of all three put together. I had a Oppo and a Sony S735D back in the DVD day and they were both tanks. The Sony is still working now and the Oppo only died last year. That’s about 18 years! In the meantime, several of my friends and familiy went through about 5 or 6 cheaper players.

Im sure people like you will keep their name going by having to mention in every disc thread "on my oppo" as you did in jest after this post.

Oppo owners, like OLED owners and Vegans always have to let us know
