Oh, this is a top 3 film for me, you best believe I've already bought it. Just waiting on them to ship it.

Miramax would license it again. Paramount only has distribution rights via ViacomCBS.

The Dolby Atmos track is impressive if you don't mind the newer sound FX. The opening scene as they're driving to the hospital felt like there was a massive storm outside.

Looks very washed out and overly bright on my SDR setup, like some of the beach scenes in Jaws. But again, I have to take those lumps 'til I get a proper HDR setup.

Does Shout's included 1080p disc handle the conversion any better?

Yes. With an Atmos mix, there is no “fold down.” Everything is present in the 7.1 True HD track. The metadata for Atmos consists of isolated sound objects which are mathematically subtracted from the 7.1 mix by the renderer and placed as needed within the sound field.

I was simply making a statement. I never said anybody argued this. But when somebody comes in and says they get a lot of scratched discs and then somebody else says "I've never had a scratched disc in my life", it suggests that they are trying to discredit the OP who is having problems.

It's not important anyways. Some just get lucky I guess. For the number of scratched discs I have seen from so many different publishers, I find it surprising that everybody hasn't had at least a few scratched discs they've come across.

A post earlier said, "I probably average 2-3+ new Blu's a week, and I have yet to find any with fingerprints, ever. It's been at least a couple of years since I had any scratches - I can't even remember the last time I got a disc that was loose in the package."

I'm sorry, but either some people aren't looking closely under light when they inspect their discs, or they're extremely lucky. I could say I never get scratched discs either, if I just flip the disc over and look at it for 2 seconds in the dark. But under light, looking at it for a good 15 seconds, yeah, it's amazing how many discs ship out scratched, and fingerprints are common. Of course not all discs are like that. I opened 3 in a row today and all 3 were fine. This is of course just my own experience, as I can't speak for anybody else.

Can you use the chapter skip button to bypass those logos or do you have to fast forward?

The worst thing about the TV cut is that since the murders are cut short, we don’t see Michael’s infamous head tilt after looking at an impaled Bob hanging on the wall.

So I have to say, having the broadcast version is an awesome addition. It starts with the original nbc television ad for the movie before they go in, the movie is in 4:3 and not in high def. You pretty much have the best quality broadcast version that’s floating around. Would have been cool if they included commercials. Anyways, it’s pretty neat. Totally.

So the Atmos still has the replaced SFX? Real shocker there. That Chace 5.1 mix was the single worst thing to ever happen to Halloween. It’s one of the worst revisionist mixes ever made, and it’s been the basis for every surround version we’ve gotten since. It’s such a shame.

We are still waiting for a comparison to be made between the new Atmos mix and the Criterion Mono Mix to see how well they faithfully captured the source material. Until then, the initial reviews are essentially pointing to what I expected Shout Factory to do in the sound department. Take the heavily processed 1999 stems and integrate them into the Atmos realm... in summary: polishing dung. It's great that the rain and the cricket sounds are enveloping the watcher, we're still getting the cheesy sounding foley effects created by Chace Productions along with the missing and botched effects that have plagued every surround mix of this film. Maybe they did a better job of balancing these environment effects out in Atmos. That would be fine if they did, but they would still be neglecting the subpar sounding dialogue and music score that are not only veiled but have no bottom end weight or dynamics intact.

I am not opposed to a great sounding surround mix when it is faithful to the original sources provided. The only way they can successfully do this for Halloween is to go back to the original multitracks and 35mm Mag tapes and start over from scratch. Way too much time and money for Shout Factory to even consider doing. But maybe that will be less of an issue for the 45th Anniversary release now that the picture has been restored for the billionth time and is getting favorable reviews.

Their Halloween 4 mix was even worse.

I love this site! I was wondering why this thread was so active for a movie that doesn't officially street for another week, pop in and see that it's in the wild already, quickly order the last copy from my local BB and will pick it up this evening haha! But as usual you gotta take the bad news with the good here sometimes, looks like there might be some issues with the PQ/AQ. I don't mind the audio issue (if the mono is goofed again) but I sure hope the horizontal stretch discussion ends up being the result of inaccurate caps or possibly the older release being squished and this is proper after all, etc. Agree with others, $26 is steep...but I need my 4k Halloween fix (could care less about packaging).

People are shocked that an Atmos remix for a movie from 1978 is revisionist? lol

Even if it is stretched, it's very, very slightly. Nothing I would ever see without toggling between two images, and I'm super sensitive to geometry issues. That particular issue (if in fact it even exists) is definitely being blown more than a bit out of proportion...pun intended.

Of course it is...but it *could* dispense with the horrendous foley "updates" that have plagued every surround mix this movie has ever had. I don't think it will, but that would at least make it not the abomination that earlier remixes have been.
