Gargantia came from that weird period in MangaUK's history where they were technically authoring titles locally, but they would reuse the existing video encodes, transcode the audio to 24bit LPCM for Stereo (or 24bit DTS-HD MA for 5.1), re-render the subtitles locally to a bigger grey font (some quick digging confirms they suffered from timing and display issues) and the chapter markers would be set at 5 minute intervals. Looking back some of the titles which fell under this were Gargantia, Psycho Pass, The Devil is a Part Timer and their original release of Attack on Titan Season 1.

I wouldn't really know to be honest with you. The only thing I can really say about them is that they did their own encode for Toradora, and whilst it's an x264 encode in the correct colour space unlike the NISA release, the encode suffers from frame pulsing, so it's inherently worse. Their release of Accel World was also either a re-encode of the MediaOCD US BD to fit on 1 BD50 and 1 BD25 per half, or they (either themselves or commissioned MediaOCD again) did their own encode of the English credit master. It's so long ago that I genuinely couldn't possibly comment on the quality of that release in particular.

So Paranoia Agent has a 'new' steelbook.. Is there any word if this is the same 'eh' quality release or did they touch it up?

Only difference is they'll replace the FUNimation branding with Crunchyroll branding, there won't be a digital copy (for FUNimation's now 1 year old defunct website the redirects to Crunchyroll), and remove any trailers from the original release as all those were FUNimation-branded releases that are all now OOP. Everything else will be largely exactly the same.

inherently, the show is upscaled & has a soft diffusion filter + fake (but convincing) film effect applied over it to begin with, so it'll always look meh

Cyber City OEDO 808 - 2022 Discotek Remastered BD vs 2025 Dybex BD
I suspect that the Dybex BD is a re-encode of the MediaOCD encodes with the compression artifacts inherited. If they pulled the same crap with their €80 Wicked City/Demon City Shinjuku editions, then lol. BDInfo Dybex BD (modified playlist) Code:

Heh, that's unfortunate. I bet the licensor only sent them the SD master of Oedo. As to Wicked City/Demon City, AFAIK they aren't.

Nobody's Boy: Remi - 2015 Anime Ltd FRBD vs. 2025 AnimEigo USBD

Disc Title: Nobody's Boy Remi - Disc 1 Disc Label: NOBODYS_BOY_REMI_D1 Disc Size: 46,264,255,996 bytes Protection: AACS Playlist: 00002.MPLS Size: 46,176,201,216 bytes Length: 05:15:30.244 Total Bitrate: 19.51 Mbps Video: MPEG-4 AVC Video / 16,901 kbps / 1080p / 23.976 fps / 16:9 / High Profile 4.1 Audio: Japanese / DTS-HD Master Audio / 2.0 / 48 kHz / 664 kbps / 16-bit (DTS Core: 2.0 / 48 kHz / 256 kbps / 16-bit) Audio: French / DTS-HD Master Audio / 2.0 / 48 kHz / 819 kbps / 16-bit (DTS Core: 2.0 / 48 kHz / 256 kbps / 16-bit) Subtitle: English / 35.12 kbps USBD is authored region free Video: The Remi HD master situation is strange; Japan has yet to receive any sort of BD release The existing HD master appears to be a new scan (i.e: not a reused DVD-era scan) but "unfinished". The scan lacks any cleanup of dirt/dust or restoration of the sort, unusually for TMS. I will note that the scan has some scanner noise which reminds me heavily of Treasure Island's scan; both were probably done with similar workflows Most of whatever film elements that were used here are mostly clean/non-distracting; however the OP/ED reels are the most dirty. EP01's OP reel in particular has a nasty mold problem The French BD (previously the only BD in the world) uses the same master, but attempts to hide some damage through digital fades in beginning/end of episodes; the USBD presents the master untouched Encoding/authoring wise, the US disc destroys the French disc without question. The French BD was authored by good ol' Com'On Screen with their always-loved YouTube-level blocking hell all over the place. Despite the US disc using 4 BD50s as opposed to the French disc's 5, the detail retention is significantly improved. Additionally, the French disc overuses seamless branching to allow for both the French replacement OP/ED and the original Japanese OP/ED to be used on command; unfortunately they decided to only use one JP OP/ED reel for all episodes, so all episodes display the incorrect credits. The USBD restores the original credits. Audio: Both BDs use the same audio for the Japanese mono which is a very nice mag transfer. Not much to report on it, it's very clear and crisp. (French BD appears to be fake 24bit) However, the sources used for the French dub differ greatly. The French BD uses a muffled source which has suspicious spectrogram results consistent with a lossy transcode The USBD, on the other hand, uses a different, clearer source which is a significant improvement with a much better looking spectrogram (no weird cutoff or leftover data) Subtitles: I compared the BD subs with what's currently streaming on RetroCrush (which I assume are the licensor-provided subs) and the BD subs are much improved over that script. I don't know Japanese, so I can't give a true translation review, but the BD subs are much easier to read, far less stilted in many areas Note: Only English subs, no French Extras: The only extras are the first trailer for the BD and the French dub OP/ED (in SD). The French OP/ED includes an English translation, which was nice of them to include The available video source of the French OP/ED is a rough PAL master which then had to be converted to NTSC, so don't expect it to look super nice Overall this is a great BD set which anyone who likes the works of Dezaki or this series in particular should get ASAP; the physical set is adorned with beautiful art by Akio Sugino, so I also recommend getting the slipcover version from the MediaOCD site if possible Last edited by CrashOveride95; 05-05-2025 at 04:09 PM. Care to be specific? I couldn't see any filtering in either Memories or Manie Manie.
Some individuals also incorrectly claimed Magnetic Rose on the FRA BD was underscanned too. Yet both the US and JP BD had zoomed into the picture and there were resize artifacts and leakage at the top of the frame. |

Yeah, what Kyle15 pointed out, also: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=6850
the grain here looks super uniform, i spotted similar grain structure in some caps of the Neo-Tokyo FRBD but could just be me |

How does the US release of 86 printed by Viz compare to the UK version printed by Crunchyroll (and maybe Aniplex since they're on the box)?
