Edge enhancement is an image processing filter that enhances the edge contrast of an image or video in an attempt to improve its acutance (apparent sharpness).
This is a direct quote from Wikipedia. This one sentence pretty much sums up what edge enhancement is all about.
Here is the link the the page if you want more detailed info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edge_enhancement

EE also causes halos around edges, which is quite horrible IMO.
It's used after appying Digital Noise Reduction, that's mainly used to remove grain.
Now removing grain means you also remove detail, that's where EE is used for.
It's destroys the picture if you ask me.

It's true, but the sentence I quote explains its intended purpose. Halos are some of the undesired side effects of using edge enhancements. One of the main reasons why people loath EE.

The problem with EE is that it wasn't even necessary for DVD (you could already clearly see the ringing) and with Blu-ray it's even more unnecessary. So they're still using a filter that has no use at all for at least ten years.

B&M: brick and mortar store; meaning that a real building/store front is associated with it (i.e. unlike Amazon which is virtual and just data and you can't go into the place)

YMMV: Your mileage may vary; in other words "this happened to me but not sure if it would with you. for example at the cash register it rings up as 10$ instead of 30$ as ticketed, is 30 or 10$ right? is 10$ in all the registers in all the stores in the chain? if it was a mistake (local or not) how long will it be that way?. An other example would be someone finding a good price somewhere else on line and goes for a price match (wants it now instead of waiting for delivery) one manager might say OK while an other says no. It does not need to be deal associated but often on here it will be.

Noise may also refer to Digital Noise that shouldn't be there.
Fantastic, thanks for the example!
