UK Cinemas To Boycott Alice?

Will British audiences be robbed of the chance to see Alice In Wonderland because of Disney's DVD plans? British cinemaowners are preparing for a showdown with The Mouse than may include boycotting Tim Burton's new movie altogether.

The Guardian reports that cinema chains Odeon, Vue and Cineworld - who, in total, own 95% of the country's 3D theaters - are preparing to refuse to screen the movie in protest over Disney's decision to shorten the time between cinema release and DVD release from 17 to 12 weeks. Disney distribution chiefs are flying to the UK to negotiate a more beneficial settlement, although sources are describing the decision as a "take it or leave it" one. It's not only Britain that's facing a shortening between cinema and home release; Disney are doing the same in the US and Italy with much less trouble.

If Alice in Imax 3D is anything like the Imax 3D trailer I saw at Avatar then we are in for a special treat. Because when Depp and Burton do a movie together it's like magic as they compliment each other so well.

I was curious as to your opinion on this and was wondering if you had heard anything about this controversy.

This was the first I've Heard of it, to be honest I was put off the film, so I'm not all that intrested, but I would more than likely watch it. But I highly doubt that british cinemas arn't going to show it as the star power of Johnny Depp is enough to already fulfill a large audience and with it being a children's film of a well known film, and a remake of a classic disney film, they will more than likely show it. It seems daft not to really.

After seeing the trailer it looks like someone uncorked that stash of acid left over from woodstock.

These theaters are just wasting their time. Regardless of the boycott this is the new direction of the movie industry. I also wouldn’t be surprise when it’s released simultaneously across the board on all formats. Hey, they can even purchase the movie right at the theater after viewing it.

Also let’s be honest after the 1st month the movie has made all the money it will make in the theater. This is especially true for summer movies, when you have countless hits coming out every week.

I agree. Most movies make all their money in the first two weeks. Obviously, there are exceptions.

Sometimes silly people flush money down the toilet to prove a point.

That would be a tragically bad idea for movie studios.

Why would they give up on getting $3-$5 per head when showing in the theaters in order to get $1-$2 per head by releasing it on DVD? Especially when a family will pay 2-4 times to see it in theaters, and only once to get it on DVD.

That's called cutting off your nose to spite your face.

It's also not exactly a smart thing to do because it will make movie theaters upset, and since that's where a great deal of their money comes from, it would be utterly pointless and stupid to do so. {Business 101}

Tell that to Fox, I'm betting that they're crying about Avatar making money for them still after being in theaters for more than 2 months now.

Can't wait to see this movie. Alice in Wonderland is already a trippy story, having Tim Burton doing it is perfect. And Johnny Depp to boot.

Tim Burton needs to do Peter Pan or Pinnochio too.

Heres the beauty of it. Everyone wants Alice in Blu. When infact they rea re releaseing the standard DVD march 30th. Then in three months Alice in wonderland Tim Burton comes to Blu three Months after it comes out. why in the world would disney do a double dip in three months? exactly. (rhetorical question) anyway im excited for both

Not Nessacarily. Three months is a long time! and excuse me, why on earth would you NOT want to see it in 3D? the 3D blu ray players arent even coming until christmas!!! the technology is not even there! so there is benefit to seeing it in theaters.
