I’d say it’s debatable due to their associations with the paranormal, the supernatural, demons, or monsters. But yeah, I guess they are mostly just action films.

The Silence of the Lambs I would definitely count as a horror film. It's a psychological thriller/horror in my books. American Psycho is definitely NOT, that's just a pure psychological thriller.

According to the ever-helpful Wikipedia, "Ichi the Killer" is a 2001 Japanese film by Takashi Miike, based on a manga. It looks to be about a young man who appears timid at first, but becomes a psychotic killer when enraged. Some Yakuza dudes use him to sadistically murder rivals.

Sounds awfully violent...should be a real winner!

1. IMDB has it listed as a horror movie.
2. When I saw it in theaters, plenty of people screamed during certain parts.

Sure its not full of blood and gore, but it has a sufficient amount of horror elements...Got It?

I understand the backlash against it, due to its promotional scheme (much like the backlash against Dan Brown's "Da Vinci Code" for his assertion of fact). However, I think it is still a scary, intense film with an incredibly original approach and style. The ending scene is still haunting to me, and I think the directors did a great job in taking a cue from the great classic horror films in understanding that it is scarier not seeing the killer/monster/etc. than to actually see him/her/it.

I watch it every October and it never loses its impact. The atmosphere, the mythology, the locations, and the sense of dread is palpable.
