Question though . . . anybody fooled around with the wallpaper? It seems like it lets you crop the images to set a wallpaper, but whenever I select the range to display, it still goes back to a huge image when it displays the wallpaper.
i was able to crop it and set it

Did you use the "trimming" option at all? Mine is not able to be selected . . . does it ask you to save what you've cropped? Maybe I'm not hitting something right . . .

I have a question. When I watch Pirates of the Caribbean I have 2 black bars at the top and bottom and doesnt fill the screen. However when I watch Apocalypto the entire screen is filled.

I have a PS3 with 1.9 firmware and a Hitachi 55" Plasma 1080i TV. Is there anything I can do to see some of those movies in the full screen rather than the black bars at the top and bottom? Is there any kind of setting I need to change somewhere or is it that Pirates movie is done that way compared to say Apocalypto?

Cheers and thanks

What you are seeing is the true aspect ratio of the movie. Not every movie is made at 16:9 ratio. There is another thread, in fact a sticky, that addresses this issue.

Various movies have an aspect ratio of 2:35.1= black bars. or 1:85.1= full screen..
So if it aint full screen, u cant do anything about it..

1080P/24 options for PS3 with firmware 1.9

1. 1080P/24 off mode: In this mode the PS3 will always output at 60HZ only including 1080P/24 source material. Most 1080P displays only accept a 1080P signal at 60HZ.
2. 1080P/24 on mode: In this mode if the BLU-RAY disc is 24HZ the PS3 100% of the time well output a 1080P signal at 24HZ. Almost 100% of all BLU-RAY movie discs are encoded at 1080P/24. If you are playing a BLU-RAY videogame that was encoded at 60HZ or playing any DVD then the PS3 will always output 60HZ. If your display does not support 1080P/24 input then no signal will be detected by the display when playing 24HZ BLU-RAY movies.
3. 1080P/24 automatic mode: In this mode the PS3 will try to communicate with the display at 1080P/24 when playing 24HZ source material. If this auto detection process does not detect a 1080P/24 capable display it will switch to 1080P/60 mode. This auto detection feature is not compatible with some displays.

The difference between a 1080P/60 display and a display that also accepts 1080P/24 signals is a non issue if your display only refreshes at 60HZ. To take advantage of 1080P/24 signals one needs to own a display that refreshes at multiplies of the original frame (48HZ, 72HZ, 96HZ, 120HZ, etc). To verify what type of signal ones display is receiving most displays have an info button or similar named button that will say 1920 X 1080 @ 24HZ if you are receiving a 24HZ signal. Then the display will either convert the 24HZ to 60HZ or multiplies of the original frame. 70MM and 35mm film in the theater is at 24fps and are flashed at 48fps or 72fps to reduce judder. 24 FPS material needs to be converted to a higher frame rates to avoid the flicker. No one could stand watching stuff at 24fps.

found this elsewhere, anybody notice this,

Quote:
Am I alone or did anyone else noticed that the V1.9 upscale is broken ?

The problem is that it seems the algorythm is now simply throwing one line every 15, showing a break in every diagonal line.
It only happens when the console is in 16/9 mode, not when it is in pillarbox for 4/3 sources.
It is not related to the source AR itself, because with a 4/3 source, if you force the PS3 in full display mode the bug is there and goes away when you go back to normal AR, so it only related to the output AR of the console.
It's ok in pillarbox, bugged in 16/9 full mode.

This was working perfectly with 1.80, 1.81 and 1.82.

One easy way of checking this is with the overscan pattern from the DVE disc, but anything containing long diagonal lines or a large circle should do.

Of course it's easy with DVE patterns but if you have the Star Wars III DVD, please go to chapter 4 at time code 00:08:21.
In this scene with general Grivious, observe the green grids on the floor at the bottom-left side of the picture and tell me if you see the broken lines in the grids.
Every 15 or so scan line, there is a shift to the left.
It is probably more obvious on a full HD display as I have, so I don't know if it is as visible on a HD-Ready one.

The bug is absent in 720p mode or in 1080i/p when doubling is selected instead of normal scaling.
anyone else see this
