The U1 refreshes at 60hz and does not support 24p playback without the use of 3:2 pull down. You can look HERE for specs on the U1.

And yes, LCDs experience motion blur, but plasmas do not. Some people are sensitive to phosphor trails on plasmas from what I've read which is probably what you are reading about. I myself have never seen this effect on any plasma so I don't know if its a myth or if its real, but there are no blurring issues with plasmas.
Oh, I see. They sneak the 60hz rate under the "power supply" info.
Ok, thanks, bear with me, I have a few more questions:

So the subfield 600hz has nothing to do with judder, but everything to do with "motion resolution"?
Is that "motion blur"?
I know what judder is, but I guess I'm confused on the difference between motion resolution and motion blur (if there even is one).

One blu ray I've really been studying/watching for these things on my new samsung b550 (60hz) has been The Descent.
At the 58:45 mark, a character is in a scuffle, and the motion/action going on looks atrocious. Now, what I'm trying to figure out is, is this 1) inherent in the film, therefore evident on all displays 2) a downside of the lcd display, judder, or 3) not inherent in the film, but evident on plasma and lcd due to technological limitations.

If anybody wants to check that scene out and report, it sure would help me deciding between the U1 or my current b550.

You can just ignore the whole sub-field thing. Its just marketing talk, but nothing you really need to concern yourself with. I have The Descent, but I don't recall what's going on in that scene. I haven't watched it in a good while. Normally when you see a scene where the camera pans you will see a stuttering effect when using 3:2 pull down which is referred to as judder. With 2:2 pull down, 3:3 pull down, etc, it will look much smoother. I know there's a scene in I Am Legend, the flyby, that is a good example to use.

If your idea is to get proper 24p playback then the U1 is not going to provide that. What the U1 will do is give you better motion resolution and no blurring, but that is the case with any plasma. Only the best LCDs have good motion resolution. If you can step up to a Panasonic G10 or a Samsung PN50B650 plasma instead of the U1. Both of these are 24p capable without 3:2 pull down, and they will give you a better picture than the U1 as well. You can get the P50G10 and the PN50B650 for a little over $1200 shipped which is just a little more than the U1 and both of these sets are much better.

Thanks for the info.
I've since returned my 550 lcd (bad viewing angle), and got a sammy 450 plasma (720p)
Couldn't be happier, so far.
720p??? Whatever. At 8ft it's indiscernible, really.

What's weird is, when I was watching my lcd all I kept l looking for was judder, etc.
With the plasma, I haven't worried about any of that. Don't know why.

I just hope it won't crap out on me.

Thanks again!

I have just recently received a 50 Inch Pansonic G10 TV and have not expirienced any burn in, nor judder with moves, or even at 48HZ I have not expirienced any flicker or seen any flicker.

So with Newer models, es[ecially with a samsung that refreshes at 96hz I believe u wont have to worry about any of those issues.

I'm thinking of getting a G10 (42 inch) and also a blu-ray player. Should I buy more likely to buy a Panasonic blu-ray player if I'm buying a Panasonic plasma? In other words, it the whole Viera cast thing important enough that I should bias my blu-ray selection to Panasonic if I go for a G10? Thanks.

Nope.

But Panasonic makes a good Bluray player, so don't count them out.

No Viera Cast is cool, but vieracast shouldn't be your basis for buying a Blu Ray player, panasonic does have a very nice bluray player in the BD60 I believe is the model code.

if you don't have a PS3, then I would suggest making sure that you get a blu ray player with features as the new firmwar and audio options on the new blu rays coming out
