It's not called getting snubbed if it's not really worthy of the award in the first place. Was Invictus good? Sure. Was it best pic material? Hah.

Elvis and jhiggy, with all this "Titanic is better than L.A. Confidential" talk you are quickly losing your high-brow/cinephile/snob credentials. Please, say something to redeem yourselves.

From a purely technical standpoint it is absolutely a better film. Don't get me wrong, LA Confidential is great, and definitely has a superior story to Titanic. But in terms of direction/cinematography/editing/presentation/etc Titanic stands head and shoulders above anything from 1997, which is precisely why it won (and deserved) the Oscar. It's a package deal, baby.

Perhaps this is derailing and should be continued via PM, but...

How is Titanic better direction? It's a hackneyed "other side of the tracks" romance that's been done 100 times before and since. Other than that it's a disaster movie a la The Towering Inferno, complete with mustache-twisting, screams, tilted camera, etc.

Is it really edited better? Is any movie really edited better? Yes, there is a spectrum of proficiency, but film editors are like offensive linemen--you only notice them when they aren't doing their job.

The cinematography is better? Is it though? Much of the visuals in Titanic are CGI. While it was fairly impressive at the time that CGI isn't looking so hot these days.

I'm not saying L.A. Confidential was snubbed, but I am saying it's a better movie then and now. But then I've always preferred character-driven stories to spectacles.

You're talking about the story, not actual film direction.

Well good thing it was up for the awards in 1998 rather than 2010, durr Also cinematography != CGI.

Unfortunately the Weinsteins let it sink deeper and deeper into the mud until it completely disappeared. No nominations basically solidifies it, and I agree it deserved a handful (I'd say Best Actor, Best Supporting, and Best Cinematography).

I feel like the TRUE Best Picture nominations are basically the movies nominated for Best Director. I mean, The Blind Side...really....

Totally disagree!!

I can't believe Avatar is in the best picture category and Moon isn't. Sam Rockwell didn't even get a best actor nomination!!

Unbelievable.

Great box office sales don't always mean a great film.

I hope "An Education" takes the prize, but I bet it won't, on account of not having been directed by James Cameron or featuring blue skinned CGI characters...

Sony didn't put out an appeal for it, as they thought it would have no hope, and something about privacy or something.

Its a shame about The Road and Moon not getting any mention , at least A Prophet is in with a shout for best Foreign language film - the film is amazing and IMO the best film i have seen since Let the Right one In.

I just watched Moon. Rockwell did a fine job, but I wasn't very impressed with the movie itself.
[Show spoiler]The issues of identity and human ownership were a little too much like another movie I know called Blade Runner. And I saw the "twist" coming way ahead of time.

I finally got to see Moon last night.

I share the sentiment that Rockwell did a fine job, but as for the movie itself, I wasn't all that impressed. I'd personally give it a 3/5.

I hope Up wins a few of the awards it's nominated for. Probably Pixar's best film yet IMO.
