Both of these titles won't be released in the UK until 5/9, so maybe we won't get an announcement for a US release until sometime after that?

Unfortunately, Arrietty the Borrower will not premiere in US theaters until 2/17/12 (unless they change it), so we will probably not see a Blu-ray release until late 2012, if we're lucky. I think the US home video release of Ponyo took a while after it left the theaters, but I am not 100% sure.
Ponyo came out in August but didn't come out on bluray until March...very agonizing wait.

That said, I believe it was due to come out earlier, but they delayed it for the world of ghibli extra. So Borrower shouldn't have that problem when it comes out.

Grave of the Fireflies would be good. I could replace my region 2 DVD.

Anything would be good

care to explain why you say this? Castle in The Sky is already out in Japan. It would only take disney producing a lossless master of their english dub and preparing some extra features. Unless lasseter or somebody at Disney has a personal preference to pursue a different animation, I can't see any reason for Disney to overstep Ghibli's release schedule.

Especially since Disney was expecting Laputa to be next until Ghibli decided on Nausicaa.

and actually, I think the Japanese Blu-ray already has Disney's english track anyways. One of yesasia's listings says it includes english and the rips available on the internet include english tracks. Its POSSIBLE someone put in the time to resync a DVD sourced track with the Blu-ray, but I'm not seeing evidence of that.

Well, Nausicaa has had an HD scan in existence for a few years, as it had been broadcast on TV in HD before, so I expected it to be next. Maybe someone at Disney wasn't aware of that.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Grave of the Fireflies, as it is currently the only Ghibli film that Disney does not own the distribution rights to for release in the US. Central Park Media previously held the rights, but after going bankrupt in 2009, a company named A.D.V. Films acquired the license. As far as I know, the rights now belong to Section23 Films.

It'd be interesting to find out if Disney is at all interested in acquiring the rights to this film, if the current owners are willing to sell. I guess if Disney had been interested, they would have tried to snatch it up after Central Park Media went bankrupt.

If the film ever makes a debut on Blu-ray, I hope whichever studio releases it gives it the proper release it deserves!

(Now, if it was something like Warner's digibooks, where the back-cover sales-copy was only a removable slip, and I had a case with a nice artistic credit-free back cover to enjoy for my trouble, then I could see why slips would be an effective shelf-sales tool, but...)

I'm willing to wait as long as I can for the Spirited Away blu-ray release. I know it'll be a while when that happens, as I'm sure that isn't the next Ghibli release, nor will it be Princess Mononoke.

I'm surprised that Spirited Away wasn't moved up on the list. Its Ghibli/Miyazaki's highest grossing film ever. I think its also Japan's highest grossing film ever.

I took a chance and emailed Disney Home Entertainment to see if they had any information on Blu-ray releases Castle in the Sky and My Neighbors the Yamadas in the US, and as expected I got a generic response:

Quote:
"At this time, we do not have a Blu-ray release date for these titles."
Oh well, it was worth a try and I can't say I'm surprised. I hope Disney doesn't sit on these and wait to release them until next February to coincide with the US theatrical release of Arrietty the Borrower.

That would be a shame, and one heck of a wait for those that don't want to import (which includes me).

Hopefully this is not the case, because it'd be a shame to only get one Ghibli title this year. The releases in Japan are going to keep coming, so Disney could always "save up" another title to release when Arrietty hits theaters (i.e. Whisper of the Heart, out on BD in Japan 7/20/11).

I don't want them to unleash all the titles on us at once, because once they're out, they're out, but it'd be nice to get more than one title a year on Blu-ray! I'll try to be patient.

Arietty doesn't get a U.S. release until next February!? Wow, what's with the long delay? If I recall correctly, Ponyo only had a 1 year delay. I would import the Blu-ray from Japan if it weren't so expensive (especially since I like the packaging)...

Yep, the theatrical release date for Arrietty in the US is 2/17/2012, which means we probably won't see the film on Blu-ray until the end of the year, if we're lucky! The Ghibli flow into the US is as slow as molasses, I'm afraid.

So you knew about Whisper before it was announced?

I wish someone could find out whether they are still sticking to this slow as hell release schedule. Of course I want them to take their time and do a good job but I want them to do a good job on a timely basis! I'm just very greedy when it comes to miyazaki's films.
