Yes. $300 is the regular price for the standard Elite console. But as you pointed out sometimes they put out special edition consoles that include a game or two. The one I got came with Lego Batman and PURE.

Nice, they have that one also or this other one that comes with 5 games! (Assassin's Creed I, Fable II, Street Fighter IV and Lego Batman/Pure)

I'm going to fiddle with my receiver tonight and see if I can get my old 360 to work with optical. If not I'll be picking up an Elite on my way home tomorrow for the weekend

Called Microsoft, looks like the Xbox is going back for a new drive. Maybe I'll pop by Futureshop on the way home, see what the Elites are going for
you should install the games to your HDD and play from there. it saves on heat and your disc drive

I've found the console runs quieter as well.

How much disc space does an "average" game take up? I play mostly shooters in case it matters.

it depends on the game, of course, but usually about 6 gigs give or take. something like fallout more. usually i play one game at a time anyway, so when im done and ready to move on, i delete the install but keep my game save data. this is one feature i wish the ps3 had.

edit: actually im installing a game now and fallout lists as 5.9gb, gears 2 6.3gb, gtaIV lists 6.8gb

It does. I cleaned out my old installs recently but I retain the Save files. Save Data and Game Data are in separate folders.

i think you misunderstand what im saying. the ability to install an entire game from disc to hdd on the ps3 and to play from the hdd is what i desire.

Thanks for the response. One of the main reasons I bought a new console was to get a bigger hard drive. I might as well use it I guess. I was concerned though, that when it started to get full that I wouldn't be able to delete a game install without deleting the game save data, but you already answered that question so it's not an issue. Thanks again.

I only have 2 20GB Hard Drives (one has all my Rockband/DJ Hero stuff on it) and the other hard drive is just for saved games and XBLive DLC.

Good thing I waited until today, The Arcade 360's just dropped in price to 129.99 for the weekend (hard drives are still retail price though)

i tend to keep my save game data seperate anyway. the arcade comes with a memory unit that i put save game data on but i install the game on the hdd. makes it easier so no mistakes are made. the thing is, i had a very hard time buying a hdd. i bought a used one on ebay which i will never ever do again only to throw it away and buy a new one. so by the time i left the store buying a 120gb drive, my lip was swollen and bleeding from biting it. I have both the 360 and the PS3 and for me my favorite is hands down the 360. Reasons being:

I find the controller so much better. The triggers are so easy to use compared to the ps3 controller and the contours of the controller are ergonomically better for my hands.
The achievements on the 360 were thought out in advance and not an afterthought just to compete. Many people don't care about achievements but I got countless hours of enjoyment trying to get game completions.
Xbox Live is far superior than the ps3 online network. The mere fact that you can have conversation parties that you can carry over to every single game is perfect.

For me it's just a better system.

though i may agree to some of your points, i dont think its fair to compare live to psn. comparing a free service to a paid service, there ARE going to be differences.

I totally agree but it is a comparison to be made that could influence ones decision on which console they like better.

For a free service, PSN is great.

Why could you not use the used HD? I thought about buying an HD by itself, but I also wanted HDMI connectivity which my old console did not have so I decided to buy an Elite to kill two birds with one stone.

basically it failed. there are ones out there that are "repaired" or "refurbished" and use hacks to make them compatable. its really hard to tell especially if there are no security stickers or if its been tampered with. of course sellers dont tell you if its a hacked drive. ive read many posts on joystiq of people complaing about the expensive drives only to state that they replaced the small hdd with a much larger one. but it has to be hacked and programed to work with the 360. kinda gives them a monopoly on hdd.

Oh Ok. Isn't using a hacked HD what got 1,000,000+ consoles banned not too long ago?

dont know. they recently issued an update that prevented people from using third party memory cards which made people unable to access thier data on those cards and forced them to by m$'s memory cards. perhaps mine wasnt hacked, perhaps it was. all i know is i felt i took a chance on a used refurbed and lost. i wouldnt do that again. perhaps the hackers found a way around the ban. im sure its an endless battle

No, it's the disc drive that is hacked (BIOS flashed) to read pirated games, not the HDD.
