Ok, Im using a PS3. Now i have everything set up correctly so it streams the Linear PCM to the 920.
Now, should i be using Auto surround, Direct, or pure direct? i understand that the LPCM signal won't trip the DTS-HD logos on the 920, but i just want to be sure to have the settings correct.
I think I'm using pure direct when watching a movie on my PS3. I have the 1020.

EDIT: I'm actually not using pure direct... read my post below...

I was futzing with it more last night. I think I'm going to leave it on "Auto Surround" rather than direct/pure direct. In the direct modes, there's no surround back channel, since the DTS-HD signal is 5.1, but in auto it matrixes (Not a word) to the rear, which I like....
And popped in a few more discs, and the wife can notice the difference with the HD sound. It's clarity and the smaller details that really sell it.

I have the 1020 and I've been using Auto Surround the whole time when watching movies using my PS3. I just popped in Terminator Salvation and toggled between Auto Surround, ALC, Direct, and Pure Direct. I don't know what ALC is, but it makes everything really quiet, so I would never use it. But Auto Surround, Direct, and Pure Direct all sound the same to me. I'm no expert in this stuff though, so...

I was just messing with my settings too, and when I switched it to the direct modes, I still had the surround back channel. That's weird that you don't get the rear surround when you switch to direct. But I can't tell a difference between them all, except ALC, which is clearly different than the other 3. I'm just keeping it on Auto Surround until I find out somewhere that the direct modes are better.

I'm really having a blast with the 1020-k , I didn't think things could be much clearer with the pioneer but they are maybe its because of the MC set up compared to just letting stock settings run it on my 606 ,

1 thing I'm wondering is if I can get it to auto select the TrueHD/DTS-HD-mA settings although I haven't tried a DTS disk yet I just did the dark knight and it loaded it up with DD I was able to get it to TrueHD via bitstream, but I'd rather it load it up on its own then have to select it every time, or maybe that was just the two disks I tried

i'm a newbie when it comes to this tech stuff... anyway I just purchased a vsx- 820 along with some budget speakers which are Yamaha NS-SP1800BL 5.1 which i've heard some good things about...

question is the speakers are rated as 6 ohm and i was wondering if they are compatible with my Pioneer vsx 820? any feed back would be much appreciated thanks

You should be fine... I'd do the Advanced McACC auto setup and that should set the speakers to within their limits, also when its running it'll tell you what each speaker it chose to set it to be it 6,8,0 exc., and if you need to you can change it (or at least on the 1020-k you can.)

If you're watching Blu-rays, then your 1020 should automatically be pushing whatever high-def audio that movie has. If the movie has TrueHD, then you will automatically be listening to True-HD... same goes with DTS-HD-MA. If you use the PS3 as your Blu-ray player, press select while watching the movie, and it'll tell you on the top what type of audio format you're listening to, and what the bitrate it is.

Yep good luck, I had a blast setting it up (other then the remote that was one of the most frustrating setups I've come across lol)

Heres a pic of what it chose to set my bedroom speakers on, since you have the 8series coming it might be a different look in the menus but all the same it should do the exact same thing with the McAcc... Which means if you see a dB level you are worried about you'll have a chance to change it b4 you start blasting hd audio

Also, look into an SPL Meter, as MCACC can only do so much, and an SPL meter will help greatly to balance the levels of all your speakers. Here is a link to a Radio Shack SPL meter for $49.99....

The pics on the amazon.com website of the rear show the 1120 as being multi voltage 110-250 Volt. Can anyone who actually owns the unit confirm this. TIA

Nothing on a specific date, but I did read that it should be released in June, 2010, so hopefully real soon!

Question for all you 1020 owners.

Do you hear a clicking sound through your speakers anytime you change channels when watching tv? Or when you are using your PS3, and you pop in a movie, and as the PS3 goes from the xmb screen to loading up your movie the speakers will make a clicking sound? It seems like it does it anytime there is a change in the tv picture from switching video feeds...

I'm having a hard time explaining it, but it's basically just a one-time static-type clicking sound anytime my TV screen goes from black to another video source like switching to a different channel, or loading up a movie with my PS3, or starting a game using my PS3.

Help?

Yep! I have that I here it with my fios box not so much with my standalone, but I notice it, I just shrugged it off as maybe because some tv programs use "higher quality sound" that maybe its just looking for the codec/dd5.1 and thats the sound it makes when its figuring out what each channel requires, because if I'm not mistaken showtimeHD for example gives out a bit better audio then say my local nbc channel .

But I'm really not worried about it unless it came out this is an error.
