Inception via Criterion is plain-and-simple not going to happen. And really, there's no need for it. Criterion excels by releasing films that other studios would not put the effort into. Looking for good masters to source the disc from, looking for or creating supplements, etc. But Inception is already going to get the first-class treatment from WB. So why waste Criterion's time on something that doesn't need them, when their time would be better spent putting out titles that otherwise would have NO release?
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was an extremely unusual situation, where Criterion had personal interest in doing a Fincher title and Paramount was interested in using the Criterion brand to help make the film appear more 'arthouse.' And even then, Criterion did not make the disc. They were brought in after the work had been completed and just put their branding on it. So even IF, against all odds, lightning strikes twice and Inception is put in a similar position - what would anyone gain? Does it matter if there's a Criterion logo on the case or not? The master used for Inception would be the same, the supplemental package would be the same, etc. And really, for a blockbuster film like this, I'd argue WB is MORE equipped to handle it than Criterion. I certainly can't imagine Criterion doing a Maximum Movie Mode - that's so far removed from any type of special feature they've ever done. And please people, stop bringing up The Rock and Armageddon. Those are such old releases, and the DVD market (and Criterion's place within it) has changed substantially since then. It's not a useful example as things like that don't happen anymore. It's like saying "Well Criterion put 007 films out on LaserDisc!" Yes, they did, but that was years and years ago and MGM wouldn't license mainstream films like that to Criterion anymore. It's no longer relevant. |

I wouldn't mind either of those. Not that it really matters. Actually, what I would like is a digibook. Maximum movie mode, and as extensive extras as is possible. Has WB done any digibooks for new releases? Star Wars The Clone Wars, might count, but I think this movie would be great to see them deliver a new release film. Maybe they could do it with a single disc BD in a normal case and then put a 2 disc edition out in an awesome digibook. Maybe retailer exclusive digibook packaging? I know some dudes are all about steelbooks and stuff, but I don't care about that at all... but gimme some digibooks and I'll be psyched. |

Criterion would be awesome but I'm sure they won't do it....I love criterion, especially because you pop in the movie and look it goes straight to the menu

I doubt we'll see Maximum Movie Mode, I imagine whatever leeway Nolan has will be used for a high bitrate transfer. I'd guess we'll get the usual trailers, galleries, viral videos and some Focus Points on dreams, characters, locations, the music and the revolving sets etc... Nolan doesn't like to give away too many secrets and there's so much audience interpretation that he wouldn't do a commentary. It will probably be packaged with a barebones DVD too.
Besides, he has a lot on his plate right now with both Superman and Batman so i think it's unlikely that bonus features are a concern. |

I would expect Inception to be released 11/23 in time to catch Black Friday sales. Four months is a standard window for even a long-running movie nowadays. Obviously European release dates can vary.

It'd be nifty if they do something like the IMAX scenes on The Dark Knight for the Vistavision and 65mm shots.

Oh, boy... I hope not. Or if they do, make it optional. Like, you know, I would have liked in The Dark Knight... but at least The Dark Knight was presented with shifting aspect ratios theatrically, even if they cropped the aspect ratio shift for home video. Quote:
