I recently rewatched 1987's "The Gate" on Netflix, and was struck by how much it looked like somebody else's meager attempt to artificially replicate An 80's Joe Dante Movie on a low, low, low budget.
Think Dante was either ironically doing his own tribute, or just closing the circle.

(And no, we didn't get the 3D version, not even on Vudu VOD. I'm still optimistically tempted to wait.)

I imported the Dutch version. It has mild video compression issues, but I enjoyed the movie, and the 3D is excellent. Definitely one of my favorites.

I watched the Blu-ray 3D of this movie at the beginning of the year and it was a mixed bag for me. The clown scenes definitely had some of the stronger 3D moments.

I saw this in 2D and was not disappointed with the plot. Its like Grudge for teenagers

Some scenes started as super scary but quickly became cooked up. The kids also did not display much fear so we knew everything will be fine in the end!

I'm disappointed in the lack of a US 3D release for this one, as it looks like fun.

Thanks for pointing out the Dutch version, which is apparently region-free--I just ordered a copy, if anyone else is interested it looks like there's often active auctions if you search on eBay for "the hole 3d blu ray dutch".

Yeah I'm thinking of getting this but I thought it was just some cheap bad b-movie as it retails for $11 here in DK. Guess I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow.

It's definitely a low-budget family/young teen horror flick, but it's very well crafted. Joe Dante is great at making creature features and capturing the feeling of what it's like to be a kid, and The Hole is no exception. It can't compete with Hollywood movies in terms of set pieces and action sequences, but it has its own unique charm, and the 3D is excellent. Mostly strong depth with some nice pop-outs and creative thinking.

Joe Dante, the guy from Gremlins? I'd like to Gremlins 3D, but only if it has strong 3D. Weak 3D won't cut it.

On topic, I haven't heard of this movie yet, but the 3D sounds promising.

I saw The Hole when it was first released theatrically in the UK and have loved it ever since. It's a nifty little story and the 3D is great! The film is scary, horrific, funny, sweet and is a father/son story at it's core which always goes down well.
This is a 3D gem and a good film and I suggest you add it to your collection when you can,you won't regret it.

Was Joe Dante's Hole filmed in 3D or was it converted?

Am pretty sure it was filmed in 3D. I remember when the film got its theatrical release and the director was on Mayo and Kermode's film podcast and he spoke very eloquently about "the need" for 3D in his film. As I recall, even Kermode, a notorious 3D hater, shut up about 3D being unnecessary and almost conceded that for films like this it was acceptable. The film had a very limited budget so 3D was a big risk as it added to the cost, but the director thought it essential.

Yup,this was one of the early showcases for filmed 3D, not converted.

watched this last night (ordered the dutch steelbook). it's like a feature film length episode of are you afraid of the dark...definitely geared towards tweens/young teens. that said, i did enjoy it. the main actor was awful, but the younger brother was pretty good (probably the strongest actor in the film). it's worth seeing, especially if you're a dante fan.

the 3d throughout was fantastic.
