This was the first conversion I saw and at the time I thought it was pretty decent. I just watched it again for kicks, for the first time in about a year.
...and wow, it's really not. My memory of this was definitely naive and rose-tinted. Awful conversion errors everywhere, quite distracting. I used this to test PowerDVD12 and at first I thought I had it set to 2D mode and the program was doing a real-time conversion. Still not as bad as The Last Airbender in 3D but a crying shame nonetheless - especially since there are so many "gimmick shots" that make it almost mandatory to view it in the substandard 3D. |

I rewatched this yesterday, it's been a few years since I last saw it.
The early 3D conversion is OK, it comes and goes. Some bits looks great, some of it looks either flat or a bit squiffy. That said though I think there is more good than bad and they have clearly tried to take advantage of the third dimension. Some great pop out moments and obviously lots of very over the top gore and fx that have been well considered for the 3D format. There are so many conversion errors though and so many instances where they have just tried to fudge the 3D and hope we don't notice. The sequel obviously got it right when it comes to the 3D but I still think the 3D version of this movie is worth a go and frankly it's the only way i'll watch the movie! |

Too many conversion errors for me to enjoy the film now. Crazy to think BD3D and this movie have been out almost 7 years now. In that time conversions have improved greatly, the recent Marvel films are pretty watchable. There's some good pop out effects but so much of the film looks off in comparison. There's better horror and better 3D out there now.

Likewise, I can't handle all the artifacting: Trails, crude paint work, non-intuitive object placement... And it's all baked into the 2D version on the SONY disc, as well. I'm half temped to get the regular blu--which I assume would lack the alterations applied to the 3D version--and hit my conversion button. It'd be dodgy, for sure...but would at least lack the clumsy footprints left by the conversion team. As a film, Piranha 3D was exactly what it set out to be...and I think 3D had a significant role to play in it. But it was poorly implemented, if not badly conceived: I remember Aja saying they elected to convert because of all the light glinting off the water, but I'd still like to have seen some tests of native photography. P3DD, however, is a thing of beauty; I can't get over how well mounted the 3D was in that film. Not only native, but very well thought out; even the night shots look great, with lots of reference lighting to help create a sense of depth. It's a lesser film, but works well enough on its own terms. And scored on the basis of 3D alone, the original pales in comparison. |

I held off on this movie due to so many negative reviews about the 3D conversion that I didn't buy it. I'm in the process of buying every 3D movie released so I just got this last night from buying used off of ebay. Luckily there are lot of them floating around used.
Anyway, I popped it in to check the 3D quality and before you know it I was watching the whole thing. Yes I agree that the 3D is not the best and some errors here and there but it wasn't that distracting at least on my OLED TV. I thought it had some great 3D gimmicks and pop-outs throughout the movie at least and made it enjoyable. This movie was so cheesy that I couldn't take it seriously but it was eye-candy for sure. Do I think it's worth it? Only in 3D...haha. I think if you have this movie and haven't seen it, I say give it a try... I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the movie well as the 3D on it. |
