But after he saw how audiences were reacting to Independence Day in the Summer of '96, Spielberg thought that the movie needed a bigger hook for it's climax, and hastily brought in the San Diego sequence at the eleventh hour. The Pteranadon aviary sequence was cut-and-shunted on to JP3 instead. That's why the Vince Vaughn character simply disappears from the movie - he was meant to die heroically saving Malcolm's daughter in the aviary sequence. If Spielberg had stuck to his guns and left the final act of Lost World alone, the movie could have been one of his best adventure yarns.
Yer exactly, I completely agree. And I never knew about him changing it. Thanks for the info

I think if they'd done a scene for chapter Jurassic Park it would have been a better film and it's a classic to begin with. I think the scene in the beginning of TLW is from the first book. Michael Crichton wrote in a very filmic way anyway. And he was a fine director in his own right.

EDIT: I mean the character he plays.
You sir are not alone. I believe you nailed it right on the head! Favourite franchise of all time! and trust me I like my franchises! Heres hoping for a alien anthology or at least back to the future styled box set!

Can't wait to see JP in Blu! This film might have it all to become a fantastic Blu-ray. Dark and light scenes, epic CGI and lots of nice close-ups. That and the weather and roars of the Dinosaurs will make it quite an experience!

I love all three movies but I agree with you chip75, the novels were better. The Lost World in particular is superior in book form. I think for the movie they just used the basic plot of hunters vs gatherers. And IMO it seemed more logical to use the novels idea of taking the eggs as opposed to transporting all the very BIG dinosaurs. Levine was a great character aswell.

There's always a trade-off when it comes to adapting but the JP novel was a classic I haven't read it for years but it had a Jaws with dinosaurs feel in some parts and some of the humans like Hammond had their comeuppance. The first film was just magical the book almost horror.

Have watched JP on SkyHD a couple of times and the PQ is underwhelming. Hopefully it gets a different/better transfer for blu-ray....

I know I've come into this a month late, but I've just watched a making-of doumentary on the first film, and it seems Spielberg actually aquired the rights to the novel before it was even published and he also said he just took key scenes from the book that he thought would look great in a film. So really from the word go it was never going to be a close adpatation of the book.

Also, am I the only one who thinks The Lost World is just way too different from the first film?
I mean, I enjoy it and I think it's a very good film, but I feel that it looses everything that made the original so great and enjoyable in the first place, and there also too many new characters that it doesn't always feel like a sequel, but more of a standalone film.

That's how it often works in Hollywood a lot of Grisham novels are optioned before he put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard). With Crichton been an excellent filmmaker as well as been a fine writer studios would have been on the ball with all his upcoming projects. And the high concept pitch would have had them at the get go. He probably was quite close to Steven Speilberg as well. I've always though Crichton's books were very screenplayesque anyways. No.2 was a slight departure though the beginning was almost identical to the original book (plus the waterfall scene) so it was a mismash (a very good one though) of book and original material. It does have some standout characters (Pete Postlethwaite for one) and ones which detract (the daughter lol) and the SFX as fantastic again. I'm really not keen when they leave the island.

And JPII has such great atmosphere even if the story is slightly forced.

Off topic. Did you manage to get your Bambi replaced TL? I saw a few in ASDA earlier and they still had slips.

I did yes, but today whilst in town I had a bit of a brainwave, because I also wanted Bambi 2, but of course you can only get it in the 2-movie set, so I decided to buy that and sell on the standalone release, but keep the slip just in case Bambi 2 does come out on its own and then I can buy the standalone release again and still have a mint slip. And if Bambi 2 doesn't come out seperately I can just sell the slip when it has some value.

It's silly as Bambi 2 is available on DVD standalone. Disney don't get how much collectors like slips. Or they do and they're just Evil....

Back to Jurassic Park....

I'm not really a collector of those sort of £60-80 Limited editions, but if this gets one It'll probably be the first one I buy.

Of course nothing.... There is no guarantee that the eventual blu-ray release will look any better than the current transfer being shown on SkyHD.

Well there is because HD broadcasts are in 720i, whilst Blu-rays are 1080p.

Wrong, 1080i.

Granted, blu-ray tends to look slightly better than SkyHD due to higher bandwidth and 1080p/24, but I'm talking about the quality of the actual transfer.

It really does depend on where Sky get their tapes from. If it's from the DVD masters (which may well be the source of the Blu-rays) then there isn't going to be that much difference. If we get a new re-mastered transfer then I'd imagine quality will be greatly improved upon.

It's a shame when BD's use the same transfer that was used for DVD because they often have some kind of DNR or Edge Enhancement used and a lot of guys would prefer it if they went back to the source which isn't always economically viable. But with JP I think it's worh it.
