They'll save that for the "final" trilogy....which will likely lead to some other new film series.

Johnny Depp Almost Ready To Sign For ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean 5;’ Has Made $350 Million From Franchise

Even though I more or less was bored out of my mind during Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, I’d show up for a fifth movie in a second. There’s just something inherently exciting about that world and that character. And despite the film being a critical flop (33% on Rotten Tomatoes) Disney knows I’m not the only one. On Stranger Tides is a bonafide, worldwide box office phenomenon that just became the seventh highest grossing film in international history. That – and the fact that he’s reportedly made $350 million off the four films – is probably why, despite some earlier reports that he wanted to wait, Johnny Depp is now close to signing a deal to star in Pirates of the Caribbean 5.

The Wrap first reported Depp’s latest intentions but, even if it doesn’t happen soon, his signing is inevitable. He’s made $350 million off the four movies so far (so says another story by The Wrap) and a script for the film written by Terry Rossio has been done for a few months. There is no way, after the continued box office success of On Stranger Tides and Depp’s personal windfall, that the two wouldn’t continue the franchise.

Plus, On Stranger Tides obviously ended with the set up for a sequel (spoiler coming) as after the credits it showed Angelica (Penelope Cruz) finding the Jack Sparrow voodoo doll on the small deserted island.

No one would officially comment on the progress, according to The Wrap. As for Depp himself, he isn’t available for a while as he’s currently shooting Dark Shadows with Tim Burton and then most likely moving on to Jerry Bruckheimer’s other Disney tentpole, The Lone Ranger, scheduled for release December 21, 2012. That means the earliest we’d see Captain Jack again would be 2013. Then there’s the little issue that a director has not yet been signed. There was a rumored short list a few weeks back but that also seems like a pipe dream with Rob Marshall likely to return.

What do you make of all this? Do you think there’s a way to salvage the franchise or were you a fan of On Stranger Tides and looking forward to seeing the next page in the saga?
Awesome, count me in.

Well looks like the films are just being made for the money. Disgustful.

Disney has to keep making money some how. At the moment this is one of their only viable series. But as much as it's for the money, I love the character and I love the series so I would go see it, and so will millions of other people. Disney knows that. So fans will be happy and Disney will be happy. All I ask is the next one isn't in 3D.

Totally agree Disney has to make money some how and it's not like they are just throwing crap sequels out one after another as IMO all 4 Pirate films have been really good and if the 5th can be good which I'm sure I'll enjoy then I'm a happy fan.

23 Bond movies. That's all I'm saying. If anyone is making movies for money, it's MGM.

True movie fans won't be happy if they keep getting **** delivered to them. Pirates 4 was beyond mediocre, and it seems like they're just going to write s***ty stories and feed that to the film and Johnny depp acting whacky. I rather have no movie than a s***ty one. Fans won't be happy.

Quality, are you guys seriously oblivious to that? Does the term cash cow not ring a bell?

AND THERE'S A ****IN REASON WHY THERE ARE 5 HARRY POTTER FILMS, IT'S BASED ON AN EXISTING BOOK FRANCHISE.

Hey, I know what a good movie to a mediocre one, sure. But you know, people still seem to enjoy it. A lot of people I talked to outside of these forums seemed to enjoy it, many saying it was better than two or three. It is a cash cow, series and I'm not denying that. I honestly wonder if the movie might have been better if it had been better directed, so I'd be interested to see someone other than Rob Marshall come back. But I enjoyed On Stranger Tides for what it was: a summer popcorn movie. It entertained me, and did exactly what it set out to do for me. Sure, not everyone will agree, but enough people are seeing this films that Disney knows they'll continue going and can make a fifth. I'm not surprised in the slightest.

I enjoyed Pirates 4 a lot honestly. It did keep the feel of a pirate adventure.

I saw the trailer for Pirates 4 after the movie, and honestly am glad. I think trailers ruin too much. Part of a pirate adventure is the adventure itself. What's the fun if what is to come is shown to you beforehand?

At least that's not the movie studio for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. So far, there's the possibility of 6 Pirates of the Caribbean movies. meaning Pirates 1 through 4 that are on blu ray and one of them is in theaters now obviously. Plus, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and Pirates of the Caribbean 6, that are already in developement.

Yeah, and then there is the fact that they split Harry Potter 6 and 7 in half, which gives that movie franchise even bigger box office numbers, then it would get if it ended at Harry Potter 6. Talk about a major cash cow going on there .

Disney know that they need to pitch the 5th film somewhere between the bloated CG-fest that was At Worlds End and the lighter fare from On Stranger Tides. Pirates 3 suffered horrendous cost over-runs and contributed towards the firing of Disney executive Dick Cook, which is why they pulled back on No.4 making it smaller in scale.

I'd be in line for the 5th film in a second, but if they think they can just repeat the tepid adventure of No.4 they are mistaken. Jack Sparrow's charm managed to keep the whole adventure rattling along, but people won't be as eager to see No.5 if it doesn't expand the adventure, which i think has got to happen with the return of the Black Pearl.

I actually really enjoyed Pirates 4! I prefer it to 2 and 3 (with the first still being the 'best'). Thought the change up in the cast this time was really good!

If there is a Pirates 5 in 2013 then that seems pretty awesome. 2 years wait is a good amount of time for a sequel IMO that already has a script (apparently).

I feel that the negativity towards Pirates 4 was way overblown. It was a fun film. I would surely see a 5th. I think the film did suffer from a lack of familiar characters. If it were me, I'd have aimed to keep the bumbling pirates in the film.

I enjoy Depp's Jack Sparrow enough that I'll continue to see these in the theaters.

I'd love to see the Source for that figure. Not saying it's 100% BS, but still you'd have to assume the Majority of the $$$$ came "after" the first one, when he prob signed on for 2 more right away after the Box Office returns came in. $20-30M Salary, plus backend profits for 2 & 3, & God knows How Much he recv'd for #4.
