Yes, Superman: The Movie (seen it at the cinema originally!) is the greatest ever rendition of a hero on the silver screen. It's many decades of heroes, movie stars, Hollywood and people's hopes and fears condensed into a movie for the masses. The film was that important. It was a marvel for the eye. It clicked.

Of course people who have watched -and only know- decades of crap CGI material since will have a different opinion.

When looking back at a film it's worth trying to remember the affect it had on people with that breathe-taking John Williams operatic opening and right to the last scene. A miracle of cinema then and for many people, still is.

That is why the other films (with Reeve) are utter crap really and just clichés of Donner's and others' then meisterwerk -which I'm sure even he could not repeat then (with II) or now because it has been done.

The problem with II is simply it was I and they couldn't cram everything into the one motion picture in time for its release and of course the producers wanted a 2nd film quickly too (preferably without the costly -time, patience and money- Donner).

It's all the past now but everytime I sit and see that opening, f*** me, the past just floods back. The HDDVD was completely amazing. A revelation.

So long as they use good quality cardboard, the packing of this could be really amazing.

I do prefer separate cases when boxsets come out, just because digipacks get damaged if you don't look after them properly. Ahh well, it looks like we're getting a nice set all the same!

Tell him his movie better push all the right buttons and give me goosebumps and not to bother competing with the original. I can't wait to see Amy Adams as Lois Lane either! And ask him we those lazy buggers at Paramount haven't released the Ultimate Cut of Watchmen! Are you just picking up a signed copy of The Art of Suckerpunch or are you there in an official capacity?

He will kneel before Zod!

Billz mate you've spoilt Suckerpunch for me now. It will look great on Blu though.

Hit him over the head with the UC and tell how much trouble it was to import it, when you should have been able to walk down to your local supermarket and buy it.

Have a good time though.

I've only got a few tins and they seem to vary in quality. The Blade Runner DVD is quite thick and sturdy but my Superman LE DVD was definitely not made from the man of steel....

I got my brother the Superman dvd tin a while back. Really wished I'd have got one for myself now. I know they're still around, but there's just TOO MUCH stuff around atm and I'm into so many things.

They're over £50 at Amazon! I only paid £17 for mine. Only problem is I wouldn't want to double-dip with the BD set unless they're the same price. It's a great set though and I love the Fleischer Superman shorts, I hope they get the HD treatment.

No word on an American release yet but here's the trailer for the blu-ray boxset courtesy of our friends at Warner brothers. It promises "All New digitally remastered" movies.

That line is particularly interesting. Being that is does state "all new" one would hope we're going to see some big improvements. The previous BD's suffered from looking a bit like older masters and had some issues. Here's hoping that "digital remastering" means these have been resolved and not that they've just slapped DNR and EE over them. That also increases the chances that it'll be lossless audio if the discs are being repressed with a different transfer.

Thats the biggie though isn't it? You've mentioned before about the banding when Superman is underwater in SR it more apparent on the DVD but it doesn't seem to be a great effect either. Although Returns was trying to emulate the Donner films. I don't think that effect sound have looked that bad.
