ok and that reviewer says it is "believed to be intentional".
now whether he is is talking about the director or whoever did the transfer I have no idea. and he doesn't mention anything about making this release unwatchable so I'm assuming that is an opinion you came up with correct? maybe pro-b will offer some thoughts on this issue since it was not brought up in the bd.com review. Official? I don't speak out for anybody but me... I had nothing to do with this release except that I offered my skills & archive to produce as many supplements as possible. I don't like the green of course. Maybe it was done by someone quite young. All TV-crap and current action films are one or two-colored. A look going back to BEN HUR (Fred Niblo) ![]() I have a very good 35mm print and I'm sure Sam & John Coquillon wanted the fat natural colors to film always had (until now). I wish I could be the President of film restauration (Planet Earth, all countries). My word being the final descision ![]() The WILD BUNCH & BULLITT would look brighter, GOOD,BAD & UGLY had Sergio's original gunshot sounds back, CROSS OF IRON wouldn't be Kermit's nightmare of warfare, 1:66 WideScreen films would exists as 1:66 and 1:85 versions... (CROSS: what can we do? you win two, lose one again..) Gotta run now, Steve McQueen book needs further work.. Last edited by mike siegel; 08-29-2011 at 10:48 PM. |

1. I am unsure why you assume that the color grading on the DVD release was correct? In fact, you don't have to be an expert to see that there is a very serious issue with the blacks - they are all over the place, gravitating closer to grays. 2. I am not seeing the green tint you are (and in case it is unclear, the memory flashbacks have a different color identity). 3. Intentionally or not, your comments make it sound as if there is some very serious degraining issue, and that a substantial amount of the film grain has been wiped out. I don't agree. The corrections that have been performed, to me, appear in sync with what is typically done on Criterion releases. There is plenty of grain throughout the entire film, and detail is not compromised. 4. Finally, I am sorry to say it but a lot of the new restorations that are coming out will bring out color nuances, details, and a whole arsenal of other things that are likely to surprise a lot of people, and not just casual fans but experts as well. (To give you a couple of examples: This new Cannes restoration of The Leopard is unlike anything I have seen or have recollections of; I feel the same about The Ten Commandments; Wings of Desire is another one; and Senso, which is a film I have seen probably more times than any other Italian film). All in all, as I noted in the review, the Blu-ray release is not perfect, but it represents a massive upgrade in terms of quality, and I am extremely happy with it. Great package. The dvdbeaver screenshot comparisons do show a green tint:
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdcom...rossofiron.htm But despite that, the comparisons show that it's the best current version of the film. Edit: I could swear that every several mins or so, there was also a very brief bright fluctuation, or a white flash, or some other type of weirdness that I can't quite explain. Odd. Sorry. The screenshots posted there are not representative of what is on the actual disc. And this is a fact, not an opinion.
Second, I am not seeing a green tint here: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/scree...18&position=16 Third, I would not judge the color grading of the Blu-ray against the SDVD. It is pointless, because anyone doing so assumes that the SDVD has the correct color-scheme. It is painfully obvious that it does not. Pro-B |

Looking at the screenshots at dvdbeaver, I see no problem with the "green tint".. All the DVD releases on there have different color schemes as well.. The detail looks amazing! I'll pick this one up sometime soon!
Also - a very small "complaint" about the review.. The movie is set in 1943 while they were still in Russia, and not "the final days of World War 2" ![]() Last edited by Nielsb90; 01-26-2012 at 06:49 PM. |

Today I received the sad news that Vadim Glowna passed away last night at a Berlin hospital. It was quite sudden. Over the last 10 years he had become a good friend. He smuggled me into the VIP areas of the Berlin Film Festival and wrote the foreword for my Peckinpah book. He loved my PASSION & POETRY projects and supported me quite a bit. Over the years he didn't do that many interviews but he gave me a great one which made it hard for me to chose some exerpts for PASSION & POETRY (the feature length film). But last year I was able to use the biggest part of that footage for the CROSS OF IRON blu-ray I co-produced and I'm glad he finally saw this landmark film restored and released with my 2 hours of supplements. For him the film was most important as it changed his life and he also became a film maker shortly afterwards.
I can't express my sad feelings, he will be missed forever. ![]() Last edited by mike siegel; 01-26-2012 at 03:26 PM. |
