I'm a pretty serious reader and I can't stand reading for more than 30-60 minutes on the iPad's LCD screen (my girlfriend has had a 1st gen one since launch).

I can read on the Kindle's e-ink screens for hours on end with no problems just like I can a paper book since it's not backlit etc.

Other's have no problems reading on LCD screens though, so that's just an individual thing.

My iPad will be for surfing the net on the couch and in bed (hate my bulky laptop), watching netflix in bed, and shorter form reading of larger documents/color documents like PDFs of research articles, magazines, newspapers etc. As well as games and other random apps.

I could see how people could have issues. I found it made a lot of difference for me just changing iBooks to the sepia pages instead of the stark white. White is definitely a little taxing on the eyes, especially if the brightness is up. The e-ink (is that really what it's called?) still amazes me.
