I agree with the scene on the beach. Other than that it was a fantastic movie. My favorite film so far this year.

Saw this today. I tend to have mixed feelings about Wes Anderson movies and this one is pretty much more of the same. Whatever charm/humor/performances the film has, and it has quite a bit, everything feels so overbearingly, meticulously constructed and stylized in that Wes Anderson fashion that it sucks the life out of the film. Perhaps stop-motion animation is his true calling. 6.5/10

This is going out to a lot of theaters this weekend. I guess I will need to see this now. I also want to see Safety Not Guaranteed.

this is EXACTLY how I feel about Wes Anderson films in general. I am not his biggest fan. I didn't care for Darjeeling Limited or Royal Tenenbaums, and in general don't like his movies for the reason you stated.

However, I really liked Moonrise Kingdom. I think the childhood themes made me think back to childhood memories of going camping, first girl I liked, etc etc., so the film evoked emotion unlike his previous films. Ordinarily, I'd argue that a film shouldn't be funnier/better, just because a child is uttering the lines instead of an adult, but in this case, its true. I loved the adventure aspect where
[Show spoiler]the young couple is evading the adults and then later all of the kids are doing the same thing
. Its hard to watch that and not remember times in your youth when you did the same thing.

Plus, the island setting was gorgeous and the day/night sequences, showing different parts of the island at different times of the day were beautiful. I wish Bill Murray had a bigger role. I agree with others who say the beach scene was inappropriate. I looked over at the girl I was with (who is VERY liberal on film ratings) and she was cringing during the sequence.

I saw this last night, and gave it three stars. It's definitely a complex film, even if the story is rather simple. On the one hand, I was loving the style and quirkiness early on, but about an hour into the film, I almost felt like it got in the way. By the end of it, I really wanted to latch onto something (a character, a plot thread), but I couldn't. With the exception of maybe Captain Sharp, I really didn't care deeply about anyone in the film.

Wes Anderson is just one of those filmmakers that continually makes good films, but nothing that really wows me. Life Aquatic came the closest.

Saw this earlier, rating this a 3/5 on the poll. One of my friends told me that he thought this film matched Rushmore (out of all of WA's films the most) on an emotional/tonal level, but I got much more Royal Tenenbaums than Rushmore out of it. However, I thought the film was a little too cheeky, too random for its own good at times to the detriment of the character development... In a weird sort of way, this film actually reminded me quite a bit of Burn After Reading by the Coens.

Ah, it sounds like we are in agreement then.

Yeah it was pretty terrific. There's not much to say really. Almost all of Anderson's films are the same and that's definitely not a bad thing. It'd be pointless to try and point out every single thing that was great about it so all I can say is that loved it. A few scenes that stick out though:

[Show spoiler]Man. The ear piercing scene. Anderson has always made wild cuts from something comfortable to something jarring and this one was hilarious. I actually busted out laughing and even clapped a couple of times.

The way Commander Pierce's cabin just blows up with fireworks after the flood hits it. One of those ridiculous Anderson moments that make you go "What the f***?" but still manages humor out of its absurdity.

The lightning strike. How can you not find it funny the way Sam gets thrown back. Also the following kiss on the rooftop. "I think you still have some lightning in you".

Sam and Suzy vs Troop 55. Another great moment of editing. Arrows fly and suddenly your staring at trees hearing kids scream. This only further enhanced by the tidbit of dialogue involving Suzy going crazy while showing the bloody, lefty scissors. Excellent.

I actually think this ties with Rushmore for being my favorite Anderson film. The man sure does have a way of telling a love story.

Brilliant little movie! It's my second favorite Wes Anderson film behind The Life Aquatic and it replaced Cabin in the Woods as my favorite move of the year (so far).

Saw it last night. I'm a fan of Wes Anderson so it's not a surprise that I loved it.

Loved the setting, cinematography, acting, and Anderson's humor. Easily one of the best films of the year.

10/10

So it looks like this and Beasts of the Southern Wild are the first two serious best picture contenders so far. I can see Moonrise having a solid chance of getting in.

It will be interesting to see how these small films fare against the big contenders this coming winter.

The winter Oscar season is pretty packed this year, a lot of interesting films peeking. From the sounds of it, The Dark Knight Rises has a fair chance as well although I'm very cynical about the claims, but that's just because it's Batman and I don't want to sound like an over eager fanboy

Saw this yesterday afternoon in a surprisingly packed theater

I loved it as I expected I would since I am a huge WA fan. I loved it from beginning to end and continue to respect WA for his attention to detail and storytelling skills. He tells the story the way he wants to tell it and at the pace he wants to as well. His movies aren't for everyone obviously, but anyone that is a fan of character development and great acting can't do much better.

Did anyone else feel that Norton was playing Owen Wilson, playing Scout Master Ward? I think I've just seen all of WA movies too many times!

While Moonrise Kingdom is very good and one of the better films of the year I really don't see it or Beasts... getting a Best Picture nomination.
There is way too much coming this fall and holiday season to assume the Academy will remember these admittedly slight films.
Also Moonrise was probably only my 4th favorite Anderson film so I am not gonna be that upset if it misses out when Life Aquatic or Royal Tenenbaums didnt get nominated. .

Beasts has been getting a ton of Oscar buzz, more for it's young lead actor but its in the conversation. Depending on how many nominations the Academy plans on giving out, they could both land in. Last year Dragon Tattoo got the shaft while Extremely Loud got in (Loved both films for the record) so anything can happen.

At this point I can do some early speculation and say:

1. Moonrise
2. Beasts
3. Life of Pi
4. Lincon
5. Django (?)
6. Rises (?)
7. Gatsby
8. Les Mis
9. Zero Dark 30 (?)
10. The Master

Thats just off the top of my head and I'm for sure missing something obvious. Ruby Sparks might come in and steal Moonrise's thunder seeing how I've only heard insanely positive things about it and doubt the Academy would go for both.

Do you think The Hobbit could get a nod?
