I hope that I'm not disappointed.

I know I felt the same way about Melancholia, which doesn't get much love either, only more because of Dunst and Von Trier, but hardly mainstream appreciation, and it was brilliant in my opinion.
Just saw Melancholia and thought it was an amazing work of art. Weird I saw two of the absolute best films of the year just a day apart.

Thinking about doing a blind buy for this.
Not sure, though.

I loved both films as well and didn't have a problem with the ending of Another Earth that a lot of others seemed to have.

When I watched it in theaters, for some reason most of the audience found the ending confusing and had to have it explained..... but I liked the way it ended as well.

I think it's supposed to mean whatever you want it to mean. In some films, I will admit that I don't like being left with something important being unanswered, but I think for this film it worked and I actually didn't find that I needed to know for sure. I was just happy that they showed them meeting.

I won't take the blame for an incorrect assumption...

... but looking at your collection, I have a feeling you're going to like this one. Definitely 95% drama vs. 5% sci-fi. But most of the better sci-fi/fantasy/horror uses the genre just as a backdrop/metaphor to great drama and character interaction.

This was a great movie.

One of the Amazon reviews said it best: "But science fiction with production values at zero is like silent film: if forces you to watch, and undistracted by dazzling computer generated images and 7.1 digital surround sound, you are drawn fully into the ingenious screenplay and the human resonances it explores."

The sci-fi was so low-key in this film it shouldn't even be classified as one. And the film failed to make good use of what little it had.

I wouldn't say it was as much of a back-drop as some make it out to be. I mean, the primary focus seems to be the drama, but that drama is all about the infinite possibilities of the universe. People make mistakes and bad things happen, and sometimes these people just get themselves in a rut and they think that's it. They think their life is over, they can never better themselves because of what happened to them or what they've done, and they remain stagnant and fade away. The coming of Earth 2 was the opposite - It was a faint little light in the sky, and it got brighter and brighter until it was, well, right in everyone's face. With the coming of this planet, with that faint glimmer of hope getting brighter instead of dimmer... it became clear that no matter what's happened, you have no pre-destination. There are other options, there are other alternatives... there are possibly second chances and you can even begin again. There's a lot of metaphysical stuff in there to consider.

Very impressed by the storyline in this movie, hard to find genuine and not over the top movies these days and this one was just amazing.

I want to be a part of this thread because I want this movie, but I saw it three times in a row, so I dont need it right now.
I'd like it if it ever drops to $9.99 on Amazon, so maybe if I subscribe to this thread, I'll be alerted.

OK. Its a year later and I bought it.
And I also see nobody has posted since I did 14 months ago.

I was going to ask, when do you all think this is supposed to take place?
I know it came out in 2011, but with the look of the Wii, the TVs and laptops being shown, yet, no mention of social networking, tablets or smartphones...etc, perhaps it takes place in the 2006 or 2007 area?
What do ya think?

Still remains my favorite film of that year - and so much better than Melancholia, which had a juvenile take on mental illness.

The main character of Another Earth had been
[Show spoiler]incarcerated for four years, so she wouldn't exactly have an iPhone.
Of all the characters, only the brother would probably be into those things, imo.

Definitely better than Melancholia! Good point.

As for the year, the look, I guess I was going by the way the news broadcast with the back and forth with E2, the radio broadcast... etc. Everything seemed very 2010 the latest... which makes sense being she probably wrote it around then...

I can't remember if this was addressed, but, did the other Earth also have a moon?

for me the ending meant how she would have gone to the other earth if she had not changed (due to the accident).

They should be parallel World only separated just before the accident.

Much what happens on the other earth (radio kommunikation) is identical to our World, likely becuase it was an effect of those involved and the lift they have experienced so far which lead them to the place they are today (education) and so on

only when the separation occurs the individuals of both planets will live their own life and not identical.

In the end this film resembles WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF MY LIFE was not as it is now.

The other main-character on the earth did not expeience this accident in her life and therefor she would perhaps be more selffish than the other person we see in the film (some times we see Pictures from the other earth (girl in summer dress)).

If the other earth doesn't have a moon, I'm selling my blu-ray... it makes this movie not believable.

[Show spoiler]Only kidding
