Depends on your understanding of grain structure. Make no mistake the BD is grainy as hell, but it 100% should be.

TCM was shot on a 16mm film stock, and thusly has a much higher level of grain texture than 35mm (which, of course, nearly all movies are shot in).

The BD is extraordinarily faithful to the newly struck print I saw at the American Cinematheque around 2003. If you hate grain, forget it. If you like Blu-ray to give as accurate a replication of the theatrical experience as possible, fire it up. You won't be disappointed.

1. 30 Days of Night - OMFG, can you say Reference PQ????

2. The Orphanage - 5/5 PQ

3. Halloween '78 / Shining - both of these classics have great PQ - 4.5/5. Excellent considering age of source material.

I find it amazing that The Shining has such great picture quality while having a bit rate of only 15 mbps. Blu rays are usually advertised as having 6 times the bit rate of DVDs, but The Shining only has twice the bit rate of the better quality DVDs.

The fact that the DNR'ed mediocrity of The Thing has more mentions than The Evil Dead (one of the top 1% of Blu-rays) depresses me.

lol whats wrong with a bit of dnr used, i thought the thing looked really nice eventhough its quite long and boring. evil dead is my favourite horror movie but i expected it to look better on blu

That's about as good as it's ever going to look. You can only extract so much information from a 16mm negative. Adding DNR would just get rid of detail along with the grain.
