Blu-ray Samurai

![]() ![]() I did some digging around the internet until I FINALLY came across something that had some info. The full cut of the movie is 70-minutes, which was only released in the U.K. The 40-minute version is what was played theatrically at the IMAX and released in the US and Australia. |

For the extra $5 I'd rather the full film + 50 minute documentary from the UK. The Aus disc doesn't even have the doco... it just has some random "Q&A session with Attenborough" |

Haha, it's a good documentary then, I'm guessing?
I'm curious as to what the Q&A on the Australian disc is... I wonder if it's one of these https://www.youtube.com/shared?ci=gh2TCTtjrvM https://www.youtube.com/shared?ci=BxySYuSTPq8 |

I must be having brain freeze or something, I know we've talked about this disc in the past, yet this thread was started in 2011 - there must be a completely different discussion of this in another topic in the 3D subsection here on bluray.com - cause I know I'm having deja-vu regarding this entire topic.

Righto dude, I won't ask any more questions.
Sure, this is a six year old thread, but I've only just found out about this title. I went through the entire thread and read every post before bothering everyone with a commment, but couldn't find anything. So, thought it was fairly reasonable to ask a question. I know for a fact that certain threads get archived or merged with other threads over time, so it's certainly possible whatever thread you're thinking about is no longer active. |

Did anyone buy this movie from Deepdiscount.com?
http://www.deepdiscount.com/flying-m.../5051561001765 I recently got this from them with their 15%off coupon to get it for around $13. (good deal) I just tried playing last night on my PS3 and the 3D/2D feature played fine. But when I tried to watch the special feature, "making of" documentary, it just keeps loading the main menu and wouldn't play it at all. ![]() Is this bootleg? (Don't think Deepdiscount would sell those) Or is this fault of PS3 not able to read import disc correctly? Or is it just fault of the disc and it never had this special feature about making of documentary? Can someone who has this release confirm that they can play the special feature, and if possible check it on PS3? |

I'm using a Sony BDP-5500 and also have an Xbox one, but I haven't tried it in the Xbox. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I've tried it in the Sony, it replaced my Panasonic BD that died, R.I.P. Will do that later after the Tigers are through losing.
I also have the imported longer version of Flying Monsters 3D, will try the documentary also. |

Sony shows some logos then a black screen. Xbox plays it just fine, no problems. Xbox also plays the documentary from Flying Monsters 3D with no problems. And both docs are 1080i.

Flying Monsters 3D (UK version)
Disc in hand: Per the back cover - Main Feature - 70 minutes (1080p) - Making of documentary - 50 minutes (1080i) The disc and the cover have no region markings. Sony BDP-S6500 3D Hard-Mod Multi-Region Player (with internal PAL/NTSC conversion) - Both 3D & 2D (same disc) main feature plays in regions A, B and C. - Making of documentary plays in regions A, B and C. Sony BDP-S6500 3D Region A Player - Both 3D & 2D (same disc) main feature plays in region A. - Making of documentary does not play. Sony BDP-S360 Region A Player - 2D main feature plays in Region A. - Making of documentary does not play. The Making of Documentary appears to be PAL. |

Finally got around to watching this. Was SUPER impressed with the 3D - even the internal shots were really well composed. After watching some of the making of feature you could see the care put into shooting a proper 3D project.
The producer mentioned how in 2D depth of field and set layout is very important for creating a 3D effect - where as with shooting native 3D it's totally different. The way they used the actual modelling of the wire frames from the paleontologist's models into the 3D was really impressive. Scientifically accurate movement based on actual data I also find it super comfortable to watch despite having huge depth. The focus was (mostly) really on the entire picture (wide depth of field?) so my eyes could actually focus on different depth locations - which feels natural. With many 3D shots what you find tiring initially is that the shallow depth of field means you can't focus on the blurred background. That used to result in a really unpleasant feeling for me until after a couple years of watching I learnt to get out of the habit and just concentrate on the film makers focus. Sky 3D did a really good job of these nature docs. 10 years after the filming - I can finally enjoy them properly due to passive 3D and MadVR |

The reason I love Micro Monsters so much is because it offers a 3D view of the world that's impossible to see in reality. Generally speaking, whilst I love good natural 3D, what I really love is hyperstereo and hypostereo, it's the way that 3D can give you views of the world that are only possible via stereoscopy that I find genuinely thrilling - and it's views like this that I wish appeared more often in 3D films. Coincidentally, speaking of Micro Monsters (which are insects in this doc), I recently re-watched The Young and Prodigious TS Spivet which, amongst its (reference quality) 3D had a couple of brief hypostereo shots of insects. |
