Just saw the movie, each movie they make keeps getting better and better. It still is cheesy (ending speach) and hits you over the head with the message sometimes, but it also has some very moving moments, and the message was one that more people need to hear.

I just received a copy of this movie from Best Buy, and the disc has a cheap paper sticker on it, like something you'd print on your home printer. Has anyone else seen this before? I have a massive Blu-ray collection and this is the first disc I've seen with a sticker on it (apart from rental disc security stickers, which are much higher quality stickers).

odd I posted that in 2012. This is definitely not my favorite Sherwood film. Poignant message, but not my favorite. I personally like Mom's Night Out and Fireproof.

I'm now engaged with Best Buy's customer support because the sticker on this disc is clearly a rental-type label used to scan the disc. It is exactly the same format used by Red Box. They don't want to own up to the problem and they are giving me the run around.

Their responses read like they were written by someone in India who used Google Translate to form sentences:

"As I've checked here in our end, I'm sad to inform you that I have still no answer for concerns at the moment, however, I'll write an e-mail to our warehouse to ask for the said issue as well as to clarify your concern."

Of course they're telling me to return the disc for replacement, but I'm more interested in knowing the truth about how this could possibly happen at Best Buy. Are they in the rental business now?

This wouldn't be the first time they are accused of selling refurbished items as new. Is there a forum here on blu-ray.com where this problem would be better posted?

They're probably rolling their eyes over such anal-rententivness. And I doubt they're going to replace something that otherwise looks fine, because of a sticker.

They have already offered to send me a new movie without even returning the rental, but I responded by telling them I wanted to know that they've identified the flaw in their process and corrected it so it doesn't happen again.

The biggest obstacle in the support process is getting past 1st-level support (in India) so you can actually talk to someone who is part of the business here. After 3 emails I've been forwarded to a supervisor, but I'm still waiting for the 4th response.

Perhaps you need to pray on it?

I was wondering what this movie was, as I always see it in the cheap bins around here. Glad I didn't buy it now.

I wish I would have seen this link before making my purchase and watching the Courageous Legacy edition. The link you provided is the only company that has the dedicated Blu-ray disc in stock. All other retail stores and online companies are selling the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack only for Courageous Legacy. I would have preferred the Blu-ray disc only instead of the combo pack since I have 100% Blu-ray players and do not need a DVD copy. Walmart, Best Buy and Amazon only carry the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.

Courageous Legacy Blu-ray (brief user review)

Courageous Legacy was released on the Blu-ray format on March 8th 2022 (rated PG-13). It has been around 10 years since I have seen the Courageous movie. The original Courageous movie was made in 2011 and released on Blu-ray back on 1-17-2012 by Sony pictures, however Courageous Legacy is an upgrade since it’s a 10th Anniversary edition with new extended scenes that last 7 minutes longer.

Back in 2011 at the box office Courageous had a budget of $2 million dollars with box office sells of $35.7 million dollars. Courageous was a profitable Christian movie. Calling Courageous a Christian movie is an understatement, since this movie is very preachy and the movie script is not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Baptist are the second largest Christian denomination right behind Catholics, and Sherwood Pictures is related to Sherwood Baptist church in Albany Georgia. Alex Kendrick directed, wrote, and stars in the Courageous movie. This movie encourages parents especially fathers to make resolutions to honor God and spend time with their sons and daughters. The movie encourages families to stay together since statistically having two parents in the home is the best way to raise children. Single parent families statistically have more teenagers growing up deciding to rebel and break the law. Of course some people growing up in a single parent home are normal, but statistically a two parent home as long as both parents are following the Lord is a better environment for children.

Courageous is much more than a fictional Christian movie, this fictional movie realistically shows the everyday life of four different police officers and their families. Police officers’ everyday risk their lives for their community and its perfectly understandable why some police officers have chosen to become a Christian. Many police officers and people that work in law enforcement are overworked and underpaid. There are many other careers that pay higher salaries and are much safer when compared to being a police officer. Some of the reasons people become a police officer is to keep their community safe and to help people in need. It is sad that sometimes police officers and people in law enforcement are treated unfairly in society. Courageous Legacy has a totally new extended ending with a brand-new scene that flashes 10 years in the future to see what happen to the police officers 10 years later. This 10th anniversary extended cut made the movie more enjoyable and easier to understand.

Courageous Legacy has a brand-new audio commentary track that was created. This commentary track is very preachy at times quoting and reading New Testament Bible verses about Jesus Christ and his resurrection and how one should not be ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The romans road and salvation message are shared in the audio commentary. Several thousands of police officers and other people have accepted Christ as Lord and Savior after seeing this movie. This movie has caused a revival in some areas of the world. Many Christian movies and some secular movies in order to maintain their strict budget, have many volunteers that receive no pay. Around 20 years ago I remember reading an article that mentioned that sometimes some well-known celebrities for a secular movie receive a minimum of $40,000 to do a 2 hour audio community track for a special edition DVD, and that is why some of the special edition DVD’s were an extra $5 to $10 in cost a few decades ago. It might be $60,000+ now is paid for a celebrity to do a two hour audio community track if the movie has a high budget in the $100-$300 million dollar range. This is why sometimes the director or crew member does an audio commentary for free instead of a major celebrity doing the commentary, which keeps the cost of the Blu-ray disc lower. Of course, low budget Christian movies like Courageous that has a $2 million dollar budget has a lot of volunteers and most likely the audio commentary was done for free for the fans.

Courageous Legacy is recommended for Bible believing Christians that like movies with a very strong Gospel message about Jesus Christ and the Christian faith. Also, people into law enforcement will most likely enjoy watching this movie.

Video Comments

In the ideal world Courageous Legacy should have been released on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format, but no 4K (2160P) release of this movie, and instead a 2K (1080P) release. The movie was shot on RED digital cameras at native 4K, however back in 2011 only a 2K digital intermediate was created. It is my understanding that when a new digital intermediate was created for Courageous Legacy that it was done at 2K, and then upscaled to 4K instead of spending a lot of money to go back to the original 4K source and creating a native 4K digital intermediate. Sometimes secular movies are released on the 4K Blu-ray format as “upscaled 4K” instead of “native 4K”. My point is its too bad this 10th Anniversary was not placed on the 4K Blu-ray format.

Courageous Legacy 99% of the time can only be found as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, therefore since I was not able to locate the Blu-ray only version of the movie, I was forced to buy the combo pack. The Blu-ray format is 16 years old and 16 years later we are still dealing with Blu-ray/DVD combo packs instead of Blu-ray only versions. For those families that own 100% Blu-ray players there is no reason to use the lower quality 480i DVD disc that is included. Courageous Legacy comes with a dual layer 480i DVD disc that uses a total of 7.15GB of space out of 8.5GB. The enclosed dual layer 1080P Blu-ray disc uses a total of 43.4GB of space out of 50GB. The MPEG-4/AVC video bit rate for some scenes was around 32Mbps, while other scenes in the movie were around the 24Mbps range. Overall, the video bit rate was good with nice resolution detail and realistic color quality. This movie is also encoded with English, English SDH, French, and Spanish subtitle options.

Audio Comments

The original Courageous Blu-ray from 1-17-2012 contained two lossless audio soundtracks. The English and French 5.1 DTS-HD Master audio soundtrack, however for this Courageous Legacy release the lossless French soundtrack has been removed and replaced with a lossy Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack at 640kbps. Its my understanding that this Courageous Legacy release has a new mix for the English 5.1 DTS-HD Master soundtrack that offers some audio improvements. Overall, I was very happy with the new English 5.1 lossless audio soundtrack that is bit for bit exactly the same as the studio master. The voices from the center channel were easy to understand, along with nice rear surround channels with active subwoofer. Overall, no complaints from the 5.1 lossless audio mix.

Special features

*** Courageous Legacy contains a lot of extra features. The Blu-ray disc contains the exact same extras as the DVD, plus exclusive extras that are not offered on the DVD. Bottom line if one owns 100% Blu-ray players there is no reason to watch the DVD since the Blu-ray is better quality with more bonus material. ***

The Courageous Legacy main menu uses the MPEG-4/AVC codec with 1080P resolution. Main menu uses 2.0 LPCM stereo at 1536kbps. For this new release an entirely new audio commentary track was created. Courageous Legacy commentary with the Kendrick Brothers lasts 2 hours 15 minutes and 49 seconds. The audio commentary uses lossy 2.0 Dolby Digital stereo at 192kbps. However, for those consumers that own a A/V receiver like a Pioneer Elite, the audio commentary contains a Dolby Prologic matrix flag, and I was able to hear the commentary in Dolby Prologic IIx with dialogue coming out of the center channel and the 4 rear channels offering mono sound instead of discrete. So nice bonus to see the audio commentary being encoded with Prologic. Some secular Blu-ray discs offer 5.1 lossless audio commentary tracks, but those are rare and 2.0 channel commentary tracks is the norm with a Dolby Prologic matrix flag sometimes being used. The audio commentary track contains a lot of useful information with a lot of New Testament Bible versus being quoted from time to time about Jesus Christ and salvation.

100% of the extra features uses the MPEG-4/AVC codec with some extra features being in native 1080P and others in 1080i. Extra features are in 2.0 Dolby Digital at 192kbps except for some of the trailers which use 5.1 Dolby Digital at 640kbps (some trailers are 2.0 Dolby Digital at 192kbps). Behind the Scenes: Courageous Legacy lasts 5 minutes and 11 seconds (1080P), Deleted Scenes lasts 9 minutes and 52 seconds (1080P), Outrageous: Outtakes and Bloopers lasts 7 minutes and 17 seconds (1080P), Courageous in 60 Seconds lasts 1 minute and 13 seconds (1080P), The Making of Courageous lasts 23 minutes and 20 seconds (1080i), The Heart of Courageous lasts 3 minutes and 18 seconds (1080i), The Story of My Father lasts 8 minutes and 51 seconds (1080i), Casting Crowns: Courageous Music Video lasts 4 minutes and 22 seconds (1080P), A Church of Prayer lasts 5 minutes and 19 seconds (1080P), The Importance of Fathers lasts 4 minutes and 37 seconds (1080P), The Man Behind the Music lasts 7 minutes and 50 seconds (1080P), Role of a Lifetime lasts 2 minutes and 57 seconds (1080P), and the special features menu claims the Trailers last 9 minutes and 28 seconds, however that is a mathematical error and the trailers last 9 minutes and 27 seconds (1080P).

Conclusion

Courageous Legacy overall is an excellent Christian movie with many family values. The movie is very preachy when it comes to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Also, people into law enforcement in general enjoy this type of movie with some nice action and stunts toward the end of the movie. The 1080P MPEG-4/AVC picture quality was excellent along with a nice improved 5.1 DTS-HD Master audio mix that sounds a little better when compared to the old lossless audio mix from 10 years ago. The extra features lasts several hours and has a massive amount of useful and enjoyable information. I highly recommend this Courageous Legacy movie for Bible believing Christians and for those that want to watch an interesting story about four police officers and their families with some nice extended material.
