Simple answer: GREED and more GREED and *sigh* consumers are willing to pay..what can I say.
I don't give a F' I will pay $30 for a movie, IF it's mastered properly. Value is percepection, it is in the eye of the beholder.

I've already begun to buy movies in BR, and I have no player. I don't see the "PQ" faults of Blu-Ray...all i've seen is fabulous PQ. Maybe i'm blind or something...but it looks WAY WAY better than my DVD's and no worse than what i've seen on HDDVD. It's My opinion, My money....My choice.

PS. I may buy the samsung now (if a good coupon comes along) or I may wait for the sony (more likely) If i do get the samsung, then i'll have 3 players by November because BDPS-1 is getting purchased no matter what, as is ps3 =)

I was at CC yesterday and they had a BD demo out.....and the clips they were showing were outstanding.....

it displayed very well on the samsung 1080p TV....I believe it was a 62"....don't quote me on that....but the PQ was outstanding..

I disagree to think it is greed. I don't think we can expect HD-DVD to cost us the same as DVDs, at least initially. Toshiba has threw in millions of dollars to research that piece of technology, I think it is only fair they have to be responsible for their stakeholders too.

All things being equal in the smart department, then these two companies are diametrically opposed business wise. No wonder they can't come to an agreement.

If what you are saying is condusive to what went on in the talks, then Sony brashly offered, heck DEMANDED, and Toshiba told them to go suck a blu-ray egg. The conflict of interest is too great. Unless there is something STRONG to unite the companies, then the stale mate continues.

SO, allow me to speak to the companies who may lurk here. Money talks. BS walks. And your BS is making the customers walk away from your products. Better fix it before golden quarter comes around, or it will just be golden showers for you all!

This techno-war is not kind to consumers, to yourselves, and LEAST OF ALL, your stock holders. Excuses don't stop people from selling your stock and remaining gun shy about buying it again. I believe in great technology too. But I'm not stupid enough to throw my money at hopeless causes.

Here's the irony of all of this:

It's not even greed that led us to this format war. It was politics and petty egoes.

If greed were THE number one force, then greed alone would dictate you go to a unified format to reduce customer confusion, apathy, (fill in the blank of any other negative reaction), and you start selling players and software left and right vs. the overglorified beta testing we've got going right now for both formats.

You don't have to know ANYTHING about good business to see that there's easily MORE money for EVERYONE to make under a unified/solidified format with a 100 percent studio support that EVERYONE can count on from the get-go.

I'm certain that ploitics and egoes were involved, but at the end of the day greed won. Look at the aliances Toshiba and Warner (now supporting both) vs the rest. Who currently makes mega millions from DVD for doing nothing? Toshiba and Warner - did they invent DVD - nope but they managed to get into the right position at the right time. This time around the others were going to get a cut, T & W going to let their little nest egg disapear - not without a fight. We now have the stage set for one ugly WAR. I think it will turn out to be more a storm in a tea cup (one can only hope) as the casulaties as per normal in a war are the innocent bystanders.

All true.

I guess I can refine my statements to something like this:

Tunnel vision greed won vs. a "big picture" more long term kind of greed.

In any event: Stupidity has won for now.
