Come to think of it, how long has it been since they introduced former Extreme vox Gary Cherone as their new singer? Nobody bought that album, as I recall. I think it had to do with image as much as anything musical. When Dave quit and Sammy stepped in everybody knew the "Little Red Rocker" for his hits, solo and with Montrose, and his energy. Cherone, his most notable moment was his duet with acustic guitar with bandmate Nuno Betancourt on the "Extreme"ly elevator-friendy More Than Words. Fail.
That's your opinion and yes that album was a huge let down for me as many other VH fans. Extreme was a damn good band though and to sum them up with the single "more than words" is short sighted. I'll grant you it was their biggest hit, but I feel that reflects more on the musical climate at that time more than them as a band. On the whole Extreme's first 2 albums kicked ass.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. Van Halen's last album before the new one was "Balance" with Sammy.

Yes I love Balance. It's my favorite of the Sammy era.

Mine too! I thought the performances across the board were stellar! I thought Eddie's playing was a bit of a departure on "Balance" as it seemed more riff oriented and less noodling around. I LOVE songs like Amsterdam, The Seventh Seal, Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do, etc. Great album that IMO is vastly underrated in their catalog!

But back on topic, I'm still loving ADKOT and still listen to it regularly!

He really did usher in the "shred" style of playing so prevelant in the 80's and was a big contributor to the neo-classical movement. Other guitarists have come along and surpassed Eddie technically but I will always pay homage to his signature playing and sound. Long live Eddie!!

Some would say that Yngwie Malmsteen and Joe Satriani have both surpassed Eddie technically. But again, technical skill is only one part. Ed is so good because he is technical but also has the writing chops. He has the gift of songwriting.

Yeah, I think guitarists like Malmsteen, Gilbert, Satriani, Vai, Petrucci, and a few others are technically superior to Eddie. However like you said, Eddie has a GREAT balance of technique and songwriting. Plus he's a HELL of a rhythm player, which he seldom gets credit for.

There's a great interview and supporting articles with Eddie Van Halen and his son, in the August 2012 edition of Guitar World.
