Beforehand they play a sneak preview of John Carter. It's probably five minutes long or so and the 3D is excellent.

Then the preliminary scroll of TPM comes on screen in beautiful 3D glory.

Then the movie plays in 2D... Very disapointing...

Just got back from watching The Phantom Menace in 3D. It was a great experience. The 3D effect was excellent. It was easy on the eyes, and added realistic depth to all the scenes and sets you would expect. It felt very natural and unfoced, almost as if this is the definitive way these movies should be and were meant to be seen. It felt like a classy 3D effect, believable depth where you would expect it and nothing was forced.
My favorite scenes: The podrace wow the depth and sense of speed were spectacular, also, the entire end battle sequence, Theed Palace, space battle, Darth Maul, Gungans were similarly spectacular.
I cannot wait to get this film on 3D bluray at home as 3D bluray releases paired with a great home theater and surround sound are always even better than they looked at the theater.
I cannot wait to see the rest of these movies in 3D at the theater and then to bring them home on bluray. My recommendation, See it! The rest of the saga needs to be released in 3D ASAP !

I've seen several 3D movies at the theater now, and I'd say only Avatar was better, but as a movie the story of TPM is a million times better than Avatar which I don't feel I need to see again, by contrast I know I'm going to want to see this and the rest of the 3D Star Wars saga many more times. I haven't seen Hugo, but TPM 3D is is more natural and easy on the eyes than any of the other 3D movies I've seen while providing a realistic sense of depth throughout.

Just got back from my midnight screening not too long ago. I thought they did a pretty decent job with the conversion considering how old the film is. Anything digital (aka yoda!) looked great in 3D, and the rest of the real elements had good depth to them as well, although nowhere near as good as movies shot in 3D like Avatar and Transformers 3. It was still fun though and the crowd was great. Can't wait for episode 2!!!

Regarding the eventual 3D Blu Ray release of EP1.
Will it be strictly just a 3D release or 3D/2D Blu release.

It's because some people don't think a movie is 3D unless there are constantly objects jumping out from the screen...sad, really, because 3D movies that have a wonderful sense of true depth and lifelike separation are a joy.

The depth adds a better sense of scale and attention to detail to most scenes and takes absolutely nothing away. Once this hits Bluray 3D I can tell it will be my preferred way of watching these movies.

The Star War's movies dont need a gimmick like 3D. I guess Lucas is just trying to jump on the bandwagon and make some more money. I dont blame him really but again these movies dont need 3D.

I think the 3D is very comparable to Avatar, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is basically the only reason I am going to see this tomorrow. There's only 3 or 4 scenes in the whole movie I can see benefiting from 3D, the podrace, the main battle with Darth Maul, Anakin in the Naboo Fighter taking out the droid ship and the under water parts. However if the 3D is well done then I know the others will be worth going to once they are released. If it sucks then I know I don't need to waste my money on the rest.

I can see why they re-released, they get to make more money and get a new generation into star wars. It's working! My son just got a new star wars shirt, new talking vader mask, and wants a happy meal cause they have star wars toys.

If you are not a PT fan but still want to see other SW films for 3D there is a solution...
